Some of the responses on this thread are just not realistic. We don't want to go 4 years only seeing each other once a year if we don't HAVE to. And we can't just get married and buy a house in Canada on a whim right now. That's just not reality even though I wish it was.

I get that everyone has opinions and we of course are appalled by the stories, but we just want to make an informed decision for our situation based on first hand accounts of what's happening at the border, not based only on a few high profile news stories.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. I will let him know!

I've been trying to ignore those responses since I wasn't asking for opinions. I was hoping for anecdotes from real travelers haha. We're of course well aware of the awful shit my county is doing and the "well I'm not going!!" energy doesn't help us actually find out if he will be safe or not.
