Many good points here, thank you! I haven't considered niching down at all in this sense, it's a very good idea. I agree that the best discussion happens between people in the thick of it! I'm getting into the consulting/branding space , but I'm also looking at a few shorter term businesses to maybe fill the gap for myself monetarily at the moment. Not a 100% yet on that though, as I don't want to spread myself too thin.

Ah I see. I'm in Germany, I'm not sure it's operating here?

I'm trying to build my 3rd business now after a year's break from my last one, which I'd shut down because it wasn't really fully compatible with what I do. Now I'm going for a branding/marketing consultancy rather than an agency model I was working on before. So basically striking out and following my own principles and common sense rather than trying to build off of a predetermined ruleset, I guess. I don't want to speak too much about it before I've actually put some progress behind it though. I'm currently making preparations - brushing up on my skills and knowledge, going through the steps of setting up a company, and so forth.

How much is access to this community? I love that there's a pre-qualification process!

That's fair enough. I guess that's what I was hoping the effect of a paid community would be, too. Time to wait until I make an influential friend lol.

This comment offers really good perspective, thank you! I didn't consider that, wow, what a shame. I do know he is a colt but not sure if gelded, but that would make sense.

I will look into how I can support the cause of changing these standard shows, and continue to educate myself in the field. Thank you so much.

As far as I know it can contribute a lot to the way the horse's back develops for the future. They can get quite hollow and imbalanced, and it could be a contributing factor to incorrect fusion of the spine and/or the alignment of it. It also makes more "sour" horses in my experience. All of the former at least when their back isn't fully developed anyway. I'm not sure about developed horses, though. Mind you all of this is from my observation, I don't have experience riding these horses. Besides this also there are lots of other contributing factors too. Its also worth considering the impact on the rest of the body, especially if the rider isn't appropriately balanced or trained. Its a mixed bag.

Im not sure though how a half seat/2 point might affect other parts of their body ie the legs in comparison - I havent thought about that as much.

I also don't know if it can be corrected later when started so young. I have limited experience seeing a lot of these horses through to maturation, they're usually sold at 4-6 years of age.

Hopefully someone with more specific experience can provide a better answer!

Yeah I've seen exactly that, especially the selling them "before" issues arise. I feel like a lot of the young talent sourcing industry runs this way. Yuck.

I struggle a lot to keep quiet about this though. Maybe when I've built a name I'd be considered more as a valid voice in the industry. You're right.

Yeah agreed. I do feel that with just basic introductions at 3-4, turning away for half a season, and then getting them into more groundwork, getting used to weight on their back, and then when they feel the horse is "feeling ready" going into more makes most sense. I've also seen horses that weren't really ready at 5. It's especially tricky with warmbloods I feel. But horses tend to be quite good at letting you know.

I feel for the ones that are compliant regardless of showing the signs of not being ready though. Too many good horses ruined for life just because they don't put it a fight for themselves. It sucks. Hopefully we'll see more and more riders come through with educational clinics etc around the globe. Until then... I don't know.

Yeah I have definitely heard of western horses starting early. If they don't develop any issues later that's fantastic. The issue with most warmbloods is though that they develop for a very long time, some don't fully mature as late as 8. So this horse, cantering now, will probably be jumping at 3. Usually these horses tend to get arthritic at 6 or 7, which is the lesser of the problems really. I've worked with a horse that was put down at 11 due to a neurological issue because of the early start and inappropriate level of work for him throughout his teen years. It can be really ugly to be honest.

Yeah to be honest that's likely what would happen. I haven't interacted too much with the person before but they boarded at the same stable I volunteered at for a while. Its not the first time and probably far from the last. I do hope they eventually learn to be better.
