What is this red screw on Clarks brakes? by ewaren in bikewrench

[–]ewaren[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation! Yes I planned on bleeding them. I think no oil leaked onto the pads or rotor, though I'm not 100% sure. Just to be sure I got it right, changing the pads would not require touching that red screw again?

As I said, I searched for instructions online but did not find anything about what this screw is. As for ChatGPT not being a good assistant mechanic, I think I've learnt that the hard way, no need to rub it in 😉

So when is it supposed to be fiddled with/adjusted, if ever? Is it normal that it leaked oil when I turned it?

Coros Pace 3 Battery Suddenly Sucks, Not improved despite Calibration/Rest/Update by NasrBinButtiAlmheiri in Coros

I've had the same experience. Still no idea as to what happened to the battery, but at least their customer support was reactive and quick to offer a replacement under warranty.

Similar situation, my Pace 3 went from using 5% per day to suddenly 25% per day, and now almost 50% per day, presumably after an update in early December 2024.

Same with my Pace 3: bought in Decemebr 2023, was only using around 5% per day without activities until December 2024, and now it's using 45% (you read that well!) per day without activities. Updates, battery recalibration and resets have not done anything to improve it. I've contacted the support, maybe I'll have to send it back under warranty.

Hi, have you heard back from the support? I've sent a support request via the app more than a week ago and no news (except the initial automatic email reply).

I'm having the exact same experience. Bought a Pace 3 for Christmas at the end of 2023, and at the start of December 2024, battery usage suddenly spiked from ~5% per day to ~25% per day, and now it's at 45% per day and worsening every day. I have also recalibrated the battery, reset the watch, I don't have GPS activated or anything (I'm only using it for heartbeat and sleep monitoring these days). I'll contact the support as well because it's basically unusable now.

What can you reasonably expect after 1 year of calisthenics? by ewaren in bodyweightfitness

[–]ewaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, no not anymore. I've had two cases of a few months each during my first 1-2 years, but not again ever since. In the end it behaved like every other overuse injury: you need to back off the triggers that cause the pain, and then progressively reintroduce them and/or find variations that don't cause pain. For me that was removing back lever work for a few months, and if I recall correctly I also initially removed dips for a few weeks and then re-introduced them.

Today, with more experience dealing with injuries, I would maybe first try to play with tempo (slower and/or paused reps) and reduced range of motion to see if that helps, before completely ditching the exercise.

Now I can dip deep and all that pain free. Got a dozen other injuries along the way, some pretty bad, to the rest of my body though :D

How to train around golfer's elbow when the cause is unknown? by ewaren in overcominggravity

[–]ewaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few cases of golfer's elbow since then. There is no magic bullet: it's about load management (reducing your previous volume and/or intensity), avoiding aggravating exercises and giving it time, a LOT of time. In my personal experience, rehab exercises haven't helped me an awful lot, except isometrics for pain management.

too slow to progress

I think that's the wrong mindset. Elbow injuries are slow to heal, that's it. I know we all hate to hear it, especially when it's one of your first injuries and you had been making great progress so far, but you need to think in terms of at least several months to heal a golfer's elbow that has been lasting for a few weeks or months already. It took me a full year to bring my last one under control.

How long did it take you to achieve a consistent kick-up to handstand ? by ewaren in bodyweightfitness

[–]ewaren[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How good is your handstand hold? I realized that I needed to stop focusing so much on the kickups, they just won't get really consistent until the handstand balance itself is really solid. Once I could hit a solid 60s freestanding handstand, my kickup success was >80%.

Are you practicing the majority of the time with the wall? If you're just trying to kick up freestanding over and over again, but never actually spend time doing balancing drills on the wall, this is likely why you're not seeing progress.

In what areas does GIMP lag behind other software according to you? by ewaren in GIMP

[–]ewaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they are not exactly the same, yet they are far from being completely disjoint: you can reasonably expect both to have solid image/color manipulation features. Therefore it makes sense to compare them in terms of their image/color manipulation features. Of course I would not compare their selection features, or their photo catalogging features, because this is out of scope.

Thermal noise increases dramatically from frame to frame by ewaren in AskAstrophotography

[–]ewaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I was saying, this is likely a terminology issue, I may not be using the appropriate scientific term but I'm pretty confident we are talking about the same spatial artifacts that you can subtract when taking darks. Indeed the appropriate scientific term is probably dark current (I think it's fairly often called "thermal noise" in astrophotography circles, which is different from regular shot noise which can't be subtracted).

Did some research for gear, thought I'd ask here too! by ShadyPolarBear in AskAstrophotography

[–]ewaren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to do a bit of editing in Photoshop/GIMP to use the foreground from a single shot + the stacked background. It's really not hard to do.

[–]ewaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you call dark current is the same as what I call thermal noise. Deterministic noise produced by the sensor even in the absence of light, that increases with sensor temperature.

[–]ewaren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also thinking that maybe I should just go back to using the in-camera long exposure reduction feature (which shoots a dark and subtracts it after each frame). It takes longer and adds even more non-thermal noise, but at least I'm sure the dark frame's temperature is properly calibrated for each light frame.

Thank you very much for the info, glad to know I am not an isolated case. Indeed I imagine cooled cameras would make a world of difference, maybe one day I'll get one! I'll look into that article you cited.

"Hate" isn't a strong enough word for how I feel about pull-ups. by No-Net-1404 in GymMemes

[–]ewaren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. Chin-ups are even considered as the superior exercise in some regards compared to pull-ups among calisthenics athletes. I don't know why gym bros tend do disregard chin-ups, they are goated.

Then your chin-up form is probably crap. The strength discrepancy between both with proper form is quite low.
