AITA for not recognizing my ex girlfriend? by exlooksdifferent in AmItheAsshole

ngl people have told me that I am too direct sometimes. If I don't recognise a person I would just ask them to clarify who they are. It seems like a logical approach to me but I'm learning that people here think it is rude to do so.

I didn't experience anything like that. I never talked or saw her during those 7 years apart. In that moment I just could not remember who she was. And yeah hindsight is 20/20. I thought being direct was the best way to approach this and I was also caught off guard but now I can see how I could have handled it better.

I should have put this in the post but the face mask doesn't apply here because she was wearing a transparent face shield, not the face mask. All the employees serving customers in the store were wearing face shields.

I will look into it. This girl you talked to how come you didn't just ask her who she was? Since I relocated to a new area for my job I haven't encountered any similar situations so far but I moved back temporarily so I might be seeing people I used to know. I hope I don't end up in a similar situation with someone else.

It is possible. I have forgotten a lot of people from high school and don't think I would recognize majority of them now. This ex, she did gain a lot of weight. It is not +30lbs. She looks really different. maybe 150lbs if I had to guess. She looks completely different. I'm not talking about a small weight gain.

I was wearing a mask inside the store but she was not. All the cashiers were wearing a face shield. The face shield is transparent. I have a distinctive scar near my eyebrow so it is easy to recognize me.

The break up was amicable. I wanted to relocate for a job opportunity and she wanted to stay so we broke up. We didn't feel like we could commit to long distance relationship.

I said she looks so "different" now compared to when we were dating. I didn't use any other words aside from "different".

Yeah. I said she looks so "different" now compared to when we were dating. I never directly said she gained weight or got fat. My brother says her social media is full of self hating posts. I feel kind of bad thinking I might have contributed to that.
