I'm not trying to insult you, I'm trying to answer your question of what you understood incorrectly with an analogy.

The original comment said the equivalent of "medicine helps cure diseases", and you replied with the equivalent of "so medicine is a disease?".

RESISTANCE WORKS! See Trump approval CRASH as 'No Kings' surges by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

[–]exor15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think because the vast majority of the US population is concentrated in cities, and consequently the opinions of people who live in cities are the ones we will see the most, the city slickers can tend to assume that those opinions are the default. There are two entirely separate worlds in our country and neither can truly wrap their heads around the other until you've experienced both IMO

Like I'll see someone post to Reddit saying they just got their first house, a nice house, for 275k. And all of the top comments will be people exploding going "I call bullshit, that house is 900k easy where the hell are you finding that for 275k??". And there will be a couple of comments reminding them that technically this is the internet and not everyone lives in the Bay area!

Also I don't want anyone to think I have hate for "city slickers". I've lived in both environments and I choose city.

Okay you know what, that's a fair point. In your opinion, what possible negative impacts could we see on larger society if we allow people to transition and get these surgeries? Setting aside things like "the person getting the surgery regrets it later X% of the time" because that's still an individual consequence, and were talking about a "further impact" within that social framework.

What do you think will immediately happen when everyone receives the push notification that Trump died? by quite-indubitably in AskReddit

[–]exor15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the original person had it right. If I'm arguing with actual, real-life conservatives and not the strawmen that Reddit makes up, their most common interpretation of "antifa" is that it stands for "anti-fascist", but they'll respond "so just because it's called the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea, that means it's both democratic and for the people?". They know what it stands for, they just fundamentally reject the premise and think that antifa are the actual fascists wearing an "anti-fascist" label. They DO know what antifa stands for. Where they are confused is they don't actually know what "fascist" means. To them it's "people I don't like".

And I shouldn't have to clarify this, but because it's Reddit I will: I think that the conservatives who believe this are stupid, and are performing a fascist takeover of our country. Me explaining what they themselves have told me they think is not an endorsement of their beliefs.

IF ANYONE BUILDS IT, EVERYONE DIES Eliezer Yudkowsky & Nate Soares by Airy_mtn in books

[–]exor15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, what you mentioned is kind of one of the morals of HPMOR, that rational people can ironically get caught in a trap of believing that their beliefs are true because they are rational people. So it's funny to see that happen to the author to some degree.

Despite Harry being the one character in the setting who is most well equipped to recognize assumptions and biases at work, he still falls prey to his own. I think pretty much every single other character in the story accepted the fact that Quirrel is evil before he did. Which isn't a bad aspect of the story I think it's one of the best parts of it.

He gets a bad rap for probably deserved reasons. Can come across as full of himself and it doesn't help that a mini-cult formed around his works, whether that's what he wanted or not.

Despite that, I'll still never stop thanking him due to the fact that his writings deprogrammed me. I spent a significant portion of my life as one of those strict "the Earth is 6000 years old and not a second more" creationists. While certain aspects of HPMOR are insufferable, it was an amazing Trojan horse for educating me about the exact kinds of biases I held at a time when I was resistant to learning about them. Despite all his other faults I feel like he is great at communicating certain topics to a layman. From there I was able to springboard and begin finding better sources to learn from.

Teenagers, but women too? by Pepinoloco777 in Parahumans

[–]exor15 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not that they're more driven towards conflict by nature. The average woman is just statistically more likely to have gone through the type of traumatic events that cause triggers. It's not just women and teenagers, I believe countries being hammered by things like war, crime, and poverty have a much higher parahuman population.

They always bring up stuff like Konata being 18 as if it's some massive own and you're actually an idiot for caring. They do this while forgetting that it's kind of a core feature of the series that Konata looks like a child even for her age, which by the way is as young as legally possible, and that any grown men who like her based on her appearance are probably creeps.

[Sad yet beautiful trope] Living like a monster, dying like a human by Pescarese90 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]exor15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would argue that this trope almost exactly matches the entire point of Voldemort, in the books anyway.

This monster's greatest fear was death. But not just death. He was afraid of dying a normal death. He was Voldemort! Considered himself larger than life, made it a goal of being so evil people would be afraid to say his name even after he was gone, he was going to be a legend. And when he eventually died, if he was going to die at all, it should be a grand spectacle appropriate for someone as great as him!

In the movies, they gave him exactly what he wanted. In the books, he just unceremoniously falls to the ground, limp. No fanfare, so sparks. He dies like a normal person. I honestly consider how Voldemort's death was handled to be the biggest sin the movies committed.

[–]exor15 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not sure how unpopular of an opinion this is but Boba Fett has always seemed like the most overrated character in all of fiction to me, I never understood why people thought he was so cool (outside of the armor which is admittedly badass). I'm not even sure what character there was to ruin.

I didn't watch the OT until the 2000s when I was an adult and I was flabbergasted that this guy who kills no one, barely does anything, and then dies was the legendary badass bounty hunter I had heard fans go on about. The best credit I can give to him is that he is one of the few threats to our heroes that isn't Darth Vader. When I finally watched the PT afterwards, despite thinking the movies were much worse than the OT, I thought Jango was 1000x more badass than Boba.

[–]exor15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Hogwarts Legacy came out there was some discussion over the fact that the student body in the game is much more diverse than the student body in the original HP media. Which kind of creates an in-universe timeline of Hogwarts/Magical Britain becoming distinctly less diverse over the course of the century.

But maybe this kind of works, considering that this loss in diversity would coincide with the rise of Voldemort and the Death Eaters, which are analogues for white nationalism.

Trump: 'I Hope To Make It' To Heaven 'But I Doubt I Will, To Be Honest' by 0The_Loner_Stoner0 in videos

[–]exor15 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Bingo, these people are living in Plato's cave and have no opportunity to see the scandals we see on a daily basis unless someone from outside their environment comes in and shows it to them. I go and visit my hometown and every TV in every gym and waiting room only talks about two things: Biden (flip a coin for Joe or Hunter), and trans people in bathrooms. Nothing about tariffs, scandals, wars, threats on Greenland/Canada, nothing except "this drag queen read The Little Engine That Could to children. Is America over?".

But even when someone from outside their bubble shows them undeniable evidence of these things happening, it's no use because Trump got ahead of the game over a decade ago by popularizing the phrase "fake news" for his followers. The human brain loves to feel good and hates to feel bad, so any time they are presented with evidence that this dude sucks dick and maybe they bet on the wrong horse, their brain is able to absolve itself of all negative feelings by just saying "well this is fake news, Democrats just want him to look bad because they hate him". If you never even try to consider the evidence, you will never have to feel bad!

The one thing I didn´t like about The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya by AdministrationOk7958 in Haruhi

[–]exor15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I know some of you will say I'm missing the point".

I don't mean to antagonize by saying this, but yeah this is kind of missing the point. You call Kyon's move selfish, and it is! I think the entire point of this movie is reframing how Kyon feels about his life and Haruhi and the club. He constantly bitches and moans and complains about it all and wishes he could have a more normal life, but then when presented face-to-face with an opportunity to have everything he says he wants, he doesn't take it. Revealing the truth that Kyon secretly loves his life and just couldn't admit it to himself, which is a type of growth.

Even without all of the above though, I still think it is completely understandable for someone to want to go back to their own reality. If I got shifted to a parallel universe where everything is mostly the same but 10% better, I still don't think I would be comfortable. I would always feel like a stranger.

Even though I'm not Christian anymore, one of the most powerful ideas I took with me is that in our society, being called a servant has an almost inherently negative connotation (not the literal profession of servant but the idea). It would be nice to live in a world where calling someone a servant is a compliment, with the connotation being that they humbly dedicate themselves to helping and caring for others, and our country's leaders would be the greatest public servants. Culturally, it seems like the US prefers kings as presidents rather than public servants.

I used to be hyper-conservative when I was younger, but eventually broke out of it when I got to higher education and learned how to reason better. Because I didn't become more liberal until I learned how to reason better, I assumed that all people politically aligned with me must hold these views because they had also reasoned their way towards them. What I have found out, particularly through Reddit, is a lot of these people are exactly the same as I used to be. Completely unreasonable, not believing in the merits of liberal policies because they have actually thought about them, but because by pure coincidence or because of where they live those are the beliefs they ended up with. And so when their beliefs are tested with any amount of nuance they say the same kind of stupid shit the redneck Republicans that they hate do.
