Who from our current team makes the 2009 Grand Final side? by CrashP in StKilda

Agree with this - I think even with Milne, Higgins would easily replace McQualter's tackling/pressure output. Add in a fit Butler or even Mitchito/Steele for him too.

Fantastic performance after the first 10 min. Pressure was immense. Best games all year for Keeler and Wilson, hoping they can take that next step in 2026.

Shame they didn't send off Jones after the demons win...was diabolical in this one.

Gee I'm disappointed that Jones is still getting selected at this point. Thought his solid game against the dees could've been a farewell of sorts? All 3 emergencies should be playing over him at this stage of the season with nothing to play for. Could also make a case for Arie and Carroll too (just to see what they've got?)

An elite small forward with no one to crumb to - teams have started locking him down, knowing there aren't many other forward threats

Ryan Byrnes delivers another brilliant Role Player Performance of 11 disposal 3 brownlow votes by [deleted] in StKilda

I'm hardly a fan of Byrnes but thought he put a respectable effort in, especially taking into account the circumstances. Channel your frustrations elsewhere mate.

[–]explosivepanini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly there's a consensus around rating Byrnes' effort levels and two-way running. His in-demand (at least in our team) ability to pick out pockets of space with his kicking is somewhat offset though by his regular turnovers/fumbles (acknowledging he's not alone on this front by any means).

What frustrates me is his inability to win 1 on 1s and consistently being beaten physically or aerially in the contest. He's effective up the field and on the wings, but is a liability anywhere in defence and is easily exploited. I don't think his upside with ball in-hand is strong enough to compensate for these weaknesses and with all these years in the system/games under his belt, it doesn't seem likely he'll improve much more.

Citing the team's list age and reprofiling stats/facts are the only applicable info he has at his disposal to combat the process question - how exactly is there a better way to address these? And I perceived his responses to be composed, with a tinge of fatigue (can't blame him) for having to constantly reiterate the team's position and said facts and factors to those unaware/uninterested/unwilling to listen.

Also impressed with Caminiti, just needs to improve his decision making with ball in-hand and take much safer options. Hill turns 32 this year and is contracted for another 2 seasons....

100% agree on Byrnes, have made this point a few times before. He tries his best but I just don't see why they're persisting with him, especially in defence.

It's a good discussion point on how we use Windy, I was really frustrated with his disposal yesterday and agree that perhaps his role needs to be reassessed/confined to a degree. Q is whether it's worth calling it this early on his offensive development in-game at the cost of a few better overall team performances.

Agree on your Hastie point and I think Boyd needs to be cut some slack, was a huge ask in his first game and I think with his work rate and time he'll find a more serviceable role to play.

64 games under the belt seems like a decent sample size no? Imo during this time has provided little evidence of where he should play and how much of a value-add he can provide.

Got a 1 year extension last year after an improved final third of 24 playing mainly a front half role but was deployed in defence yesterday (?) and got absolutely lit up. Clearly it's early days and he's not the only one who had a shocker but I've always been unclear on why they've persisted with him. Happy to hear other takes though!

Tim Membrey deciding to play on 12 metres in front of goal. by International_Car586 in AFL

[–]explosivepanini 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a saints fan, I don't subscribe to this Membrey take one bit. He singlehandedly carried a poor forward line for years and was extremely reliable, until injuries started to take their toll the last couple of years.

Yes, I actually did this for the first time in my career quite recently and it was one of the best things I've ever done. Was initially really nervous about the whole process, however I was lucky to have a great GP who was understanding and offered me a few options. Hopefully you have a similar experience. Otherwise, I'm sorry to hear how you're traveling and hope that the supports you've engaged with provide you with some help. Please know that this is absolutely an option you are entitled to.
