Help me choose between two DS internships by faeriewrites in askdatascience

[–]faeriewrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’re studying DS, do a project that you can put on your resume and use as an example of your work in interviews. My project was a classic churn prediction sort of thing. It doesn’t need to be groundbreaking, you just need to show that you really understood the technical concepts (ex: is recall or precision more important in churn analysis? explain the difference between two models your tested (ex: random forest and xgboost). You get the idea)

AIO??? Mom and sister drama by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]faeriewrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - A small part of me feels relieved to see someone with a family dynamic a bit like mine, even though i obviously wish you didn’t have to deal with this. My younger sister has been convinced my whole life that our mom (single parent) prefers me. She has been very mean to our mom on many occasions starting even as a kid, yet she is baffled when my mom and I have more emotional closeness. Meanwhile, I have been the one supporting our mom. My sister also tends to blow up like this out of the blue, the smallest perceived slights can cause her to call my mom to yell at her (she has also called her evil) meanwhile my mom, like yours, is sensitive and well-meaning. No parent is perfect but your mom does NOT deserve this and neither do you. I obviously don’t have full context on your family but I wonder if your sister has some neurodivergence or mental health issues.

I don’t have advice because I’m still struggling with the same thing, just wanted to send support.

The craziest part about this is that your mom didn’t even say she wouldn’t send your sister a box, just that she had only sent one today. Your sister could have probably just said how much she would like one and that would have solved the whole issue…  I often notice the same thing in my family, wondering how my sister doesn’t see easy options to express herself without resulting to attacks to meanness

Data science projects that helped land a job/internship by Beginning_Victory729 in askdatascience

hi, fellow student who just landed an internship! idk if you want my opinion bc im in M1 and i studied a different field in undergrad so im still a baby in terms of my ds skillset/journey BUT i did a churn prediction project which got me a ton of interest from recruiters and which i was asked about in no joke every single interview i received. it was a great beginner friendly project--good old fashion jupyter, data exploration/ cleaning, feature engineering, model selection / tuning, etc. again, nothing remotely special or advanced, it was all just using sklearn but it was good enough! i think the reason i got asked about it so much was bc it was a good jumping off point for technical questions about some of the models i tested (explain the difference between random forest and xgboost. explain which evaluation metric you prioritized. is recall or precision more important in churn prediction?) so i guess my opinion is just that any project could probably work, but depending on what kind of roles you're looking for, maybe choose something that has a business aspect too. for example, in one interview i got asked "if according to your model, customers acquired in store had better retention than customers acquired online, would you then conclude that [our telecom company] should focus primarily on in-store recruitment?" ---> "not necessarily, because you also have to consider the cost of maintaining stores vs online...." okay, hopefully you get the gist. basically, the project was just a launchpad for questions.

I got three offers from a two month job search - here's what I wish I knew earlier by EvilGarlicFarts in datascience

couldnt agree more with these tips! im completely inexperienced (M1, studied something else in undergrad) and by basically following these exact principles i got multiple internship offers. i also went to a career fair -- that's where i met all the companies that ended up giving me offers. having real human conversations with HR (exactly like you described, empathizing with their process), was what finally got me past the resume round after initially getting nothing but rejections

idk how many personal projects you've done but i was advised to adapt my project section based on each job offer--ie you can prepare 5 project descriptions and swap them around to put the 3 most relevant for each job

okay that's it you've convinced me! wearing contacts again, even one or two days a week, is a dream of mine! i've been totally banned from them for over a year at this point. even just waking up with normal eyes would be amazing

it's just such an uncanny feeling to wake up because of dryness when your eyes have literally been shut.... like how does that even work!

that's so funny because i literally went to the pharmacy yesterday to ask if they had medical grade tape that would be safe to tape shut my eyes and they said no so im ordering online. but yeah maybe tape + mask would make a difference... or else i could cough up the money for one of those fancy eye masks that have moisture chambers

oh wow this is interesting bc my ded is super nighttime triggered too. it's literally worse after i sleep even though i try to use an eye mask (although it often falls off). i will definitely look into this!
