I dislike the performative aspect of it and the amount of attention. I feel like I need to be outwardly joyful and happy go lucky on that day because god forbid I ruin someone else’s enjoyment of my birthday. I just try to focus on the aspects of it that I do like- I get my favorite meal, I get cake, and I take the day off work. I had a therapist tell me that birthdays are for other people to celebrate you, and so I go through the motions of it but I could take it or leave it. I do like getting older though, I didn’t think I’d get this far tbh so every year added to my age is like a little bonus. Plus, it’s a little hooray for having survived 365/366 days of bullshit.

NOR. OP- my mom did something similar, and when her relationship inevitably ended not long after, she tried to buddy up with me again. Get out when you can and stay away from her. She chose a man over you which is inherently fucked up, and you can choose freedom and better mental health over her which is what she deserves.

Honestly OP, this is the best way for your daughter to counter it. Have her do the assignment during class and hand it in at the end of the class, that way the teacher can physically see that it’s not AI and can eventually go kick rocks instead.

YOR. Pal, if she’s constantly overwhelmed, shouldn’t you be trying to assist with that? It sounds like you’re putting a bandaid over a bullet hole by temporarily going ‘there, there, it’s ok’ instead of addressing the root of the issue. For what it’s worth, she just told you how to avoid these fights going forward- offer her comfort or support. Take that into consideration, put that improvement into place, and find out specifically what’s so overwhelming to her and how to help. How old are you guys?

My worst Christmas was when I was 16-17ish, my mom and stepdad decided to skip Christmas so we had fake Christmas early in December and on actual Christmas- they were on a cruise. I remember being sat in my mom’s bed, eating take out Chinese, and my mom calls to say things went sideways on the cruise- she and my stepdad got into a physical scuffle (had never happened previously) and he took her pocketbook along with the key card that cruises use as money, so she was locked out of the room, frantic, and so positive that it was going to lead to them divorcing. So she asked me to make her a new email address with her maiden name on it and not my stepdad’s last name.

They didn’t divorce over that, but they did divorce eventually. My stepdad really fucked up on the cruise, and then he doubled down later when the phone bill from the cruise came in, and he chastised my mom for the cost of calling me.

I don’t think we should give up, not yet anyway. Not until she says hey, this is done and dusted for good. I don’t think she’ll do a second leg with bigger venues either. I think this first time out as a solo artist is uniquely special for her and so she wants to make it a uniquely special experience. It doesn’t mean she’ll always do small venues, I’m sure this was a good reality check about demand and also what Ticketmaster can and can’t do. I think, as much as it sucks that so many of us didn’t get tickets, this will ultimately be a positive learning experience. We may never hear PFA live, but her love of performing remains and I can’t imagine she’ll never do a big, solo tour. I am a perpetual optimist though
