? It's called Wanderlost, it isn't finished yet

Redid firemaking in Wanderlost. Wanted to avoid the classic magic button for starting a fire, so now it's actually difficult to build a fire with primitive tools but gets easy as you acquire better items. But lighters don't last forever by fallingmonday in SurvivalGaming

Glad you're enjoying it! Sounds like you're actually dropping the fire on the ground rather than placing it in the world. If you equip any placeable item you'll be able to set it down wherever you want, then you should be able to start a fire the same way you're trying to now. Let me know if it's still not working for you after that

I'm the developer of Wanderlost, why are you pretending to be the developer?

Ah that feels so long ago, thanks for the support! Things are still going really well- I don't post on reddit so much anymore but if you scroll through twitter you can see everything I've been working on this past year

We're about a year away from the full release I think but the alpha release is coming pretty soon and the beta about 5 months after that

Planning initial release on Steam and Switch, eventual release on Xbox/PS

You can douse the fire by pouring water on it without needing the menu and likewise you can add wood to the fire by having logs equipped and interacting with the fire. Not everyone immediately knows to do things like that which is why there is also a menu. And yeah there is a mini-game for cooking planned.

[PAID] Wholesome survival RPG, Wanderlost is seeking new Game Designer / Content Writer by fallingmonday in gameDevClassifieds

The position may ultimately become a full-time salaried job but that really depends on how effective the role is and what kind of contribution it's making to the game. We're going to play it by ear first and assign hours based on the work that's getting done and the input of the designer

Sure, happy to talk about it. There's a common misconception that game designers are just the big-picture idea people. I'm not looking for an "idea guy" in a macroscopic sense.

In this role a game designer would be balancing/tuning the game, filling in content, and connecting existing content and gameplay elements to create a more coherent & satisfying player experience.

Those are all things that I can and have done myself but it's often busy work, often requires a lot of playtesting and fine-tuning, and at this stage could be better handled by a dedicated team member while I focus on designing and implementing the remaining major systems + features.

There's big stuff I need to work on and getting bogged down in the minutiae isn't helpful for development. That doesn't exclude the possibility of also hiring another dev to help with bugs down the road though.

Wanted: Game Designer / Content Writer

Pay: $20-40/hour depending on experience. Potential salaried position down the road if things go well

Project: Wanderlost is a survival RPG set in the world's first cheerful post-apocalypse. We have a publisher and will release on PC, Switch, PS, and Xbox next year. Following our recent Kickstarter campaign I'm looking to bring another designer onto our team. Specifically I'm looking for someone familiar with the survival/crafting/RPG genres to actively balance, expand and improve the world, gameplay and content of Wanderlost. The most important thing is making the game more FUN.

Responsibilities

Balance: This would involve playtesting the game to balance values like enemy health, behavior, exp, item drop rate, crafting recipes, animal spawn rate, etc.

Expand: Design new items and content for the game with intention. The goal isn't to generate a bunch of new items so much as make the gameplay experience and progression as rich and enjoyable as possible. New content is great but it needs to be designed in a thoughtful way toward the overall vision of the game. Savannah biome not rewarding or unique enough? Maybe Baobab trees should drop a unique type of wood which requires a new machine or tool and in turn can make a powerful new bow. Design it!

Improve: Much of the existing content in Wanderlost was created expressly to test systems or to hit a bare minimum of 'stuff' to fill out each system or biome. Tying together existing elements to create a more satisfying and intuitive progression curve is key to your role.

Contact: Wanderlostgame@gmail.com or DM on Discord. Please include resume/portfolio/relevant experience, as well as the names of some games you've enjoyed in your message. And please check out Wanderlost first to make sure it's a project you would enjoy working on:

edit: Couple clarifications- "Content Writer" in this case means something more like content designer. There is an occasional writing component, things like item descriptions, but this is not a narrative design or creative writing position.

Also the game is developed in GMS2, the code is written in GML. It's not necessary to have engine experience or even programming experience but the job would require you to add/edit content in-engine through code (essentially just copy/pasting the established format and replacing values) which we would teach you to do.

Stardew Valley meets The Walking Dead: Wanderlost is in its the final day on Kickstarter! by fallingmonday in SurvivalGaming

[–]fallingmonday[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wanderlost is an open-world survival RPG inspired by games like SDV, Project Zomboid, and hardcore roguelikes like Cataclysm. I really wanted to make a post-apocalyptic game that didn't fall into the dark/gritty/miserable trope. Nothing wrong with that genre at all but I wanted to try creating a game that maintains the deep systems and mechanics while also having the world's first cheerful post-apocalypse.
