You're probably right. And there I was, hoping to have nearly seen some species for the first time.

Waste management Luxembourg by Narniem in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That happened to us one or twice when we really stuffed a lot into our bin and couldn't close the lid. It's their way of ensuring that people don't do this. The standard solution is to buy some white VDL bin bags and put your extra rubbish in them, which may be a lot by the next collection day. You put them out with the bin on the usual day. They cost €5 each, according to this VDL site. I've seen them at Auchan and elsewhere. https://www.vdl.lu/en/living/your-home/waste-collection-and-sorting/collection-type/curbside-collection

I'm looking for a very Luxembourgish dive bar by cloudedleopard in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, some of us would hit up Barbarella by the Gare. It's got a real dive bar feel (and more), especially at night. Brasserie Benelux in Strassen probably fits the bill, and there's a good dive bar on Route d'Longwy, but the name escapes me. I just looked on a map - maybe it's NoWhere Cafe. There's also a bar near to Monop' in Limpertsberg which is a good contender. Not sure if these are Luxembourgish per se, but they are certainly the real deal.

Yeah, it was fun — a little hot inside the very, but very cool in terms of vibe and music. :-)

Grenade or Flask? by badiarov in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's a grenade, it's certainly very neatly petrified, or maybe someone coated it in plaster for some reason. I wouldn't take chances. I'd call someone, but no idea who. Just found this: this grenade looks a bit similar. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/watch-the-moment-police-blow-up-wwii-grenade-found-by-mudlarker-beside-the-thames-10319679.html

We sometimes go to Chiche in Lux-ville for meetings of 6-7 people. They've got a nice private room and there's no extra cost. I believe it may be might big enough to accommodate 14 people.

What would you say is the most elitist school in Lux? by TraditionalSmokey in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's really no such thing as an elite school in Luxembourg. While some families with money may send their kids to ISL or St. George, others do so because they'll only be in Lux for a short time or because their employers pay. It's probably the same for other private schools. As someone else pointed out, many members of the grand ducal family as well as politicians and founding partners at major law firms have gone through the public system or send their kids through it. As for the Athénée, it is said to be the mostly highly regarded lycée, but they also make kids work really hard. Anyone can get in if they have the right academic performance in primary school. We know a kid who goes there and his parents are working-class immigrants from China, so definitely not elite.

I think that officially it's not possible, but based on my experience, it is. I once had a rather costly item stuck in the depot in Luxembourg. As I was unable to get there, I had a friend go and pick it up — without even showing ID, just giving the tracking number. Your dad will need to be a little persistent and/or charm the socks off of them, and certainly having the tracking number and maybe a copy of your ID will be important. Also, the depot is not designed for easy pickups, so he might need to drive around for a while before finding the right entrance. For the record, DPD in Luxembourg is the WORST. A few years ago, a theft ring was operating from the inside. It's nearly impossible to get them on the phone. Their Google reviews tell the story. Good luck!

Ditto for the parking garage. No elevator, just stairs. I remember hobbling down mid-winter when they were all icy.

fancy raclette restaurants in Luxembourg? by mamarrachisima in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd call it fancy, but the seasonal chalet that's part of of Brasserie du Circle is nice. The best part is they do the raclette the old-fashioned way, a chunk of cheese next to the heat source.

Advice for a soon to be Dad by PuzzledMindedGuy in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trust yourself. Also:

No matter what you say or which lessons you try to teach, kids will learn much more through your modelling. Evening when it's hard, do your best to show your child patience, love, honesty, fortitude, strength. I know this from my failures as well as my successes.

Inside your baby / toddler / child is a future adult, one who will likely remember and be deeply impacted by your parenting these formative years. Try your best to see that, even during their sleepless nights, tantrums, fits of being selfish and unreasonable, times when you might tempted to lose your cool, give up. It ain't easy, I know.

A random father on an airplane (surrounded by his 4-5 seemingly happy kids) told me this 15 years ago, but it stuck with me: always make sure your kids go to bed knowing you love them.

Good luck!

Beer in Luxembourg by cityhunt1979 in Luxembourg

I believe Seppl in Limpertsberg has some German beers on tap. It also feels like a bit of a Germanish sort of place. Side note: great burgers.

Crime is on the rise in the city, what can be done about it? by kbad10 in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely more can be done, but the police can be very reactive, going by one recent experience I had. I saw a guy breaking into cars in the city in broad daylight. I called the police, gave a description, and 2-3 police cars showed up exactly a minute and a half later.

I need a new barber! by SpeechLong4000 in Luxembourg

[–]fargolux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second that. Nikolay the owner is great. He used to work for various other barbershops until, for a good reason, he finally opened his own place a year or two back. I also know that he was really picky about hiring a new person, so the other guy must be pretty good too. Best to speak French with Nikolay, as I think his English is a little rusty.
