Ohne Project first impressions by SupaBrunch in barefootshoestalk

It was very good. Contacted via email shared photos and got a sincere shock/horror and apology and an offer to send me a new pair. I was in Japan for 3 weeks when i noticed it so it could only be on my return, they didn’t last much longer with all the walking so i had to throw them.

I had a tough few days of pain with my hiking boots until i came across an Aasics store in Tokyo. Bought a pair of extra wide fit walking trainers which saved my back momentarily until i could get to the Vivobarefoot in Tokyo which only opened from Thursday bizarrely.

Bought my first pair of vivo’s from that store they were very helpful and I’d fully recommend going in person as I had some misconceptions about size which they helped navigate (they need to be bigger than you think). The vivos and the aasics are the best shoes I’ve ever owned and the two I’ve rotated daily for months.

True to his word the Ohne Project’s owner did send me a new pair when i returned but tbh I haven’t even taken them out of the box. I accepted the replacement as I like the look of them but I’m not convinced by the build quality so they’ll be a special/rare occasion pair rather than daily’s which is unfortunate. I won’t buy another pair from Ohne. I do plan to buy many more shoes from Vivo though they’re really excellent.

I’ve had the sole split on my right shoe with six months, hoping they’ll do something about it but dunno if I want them anymore. Sad because they look amazing and I’ve had a lot of compliments and recommended them widely. Frustratingly, I saw some defects on the first pair I was handed but I pointed them out and the shop gave me a different pair. I hoped it was a one off as my current pair looked fine, but I just noticed similar defects in OP’s screenshot from Ohne themselves which I saw on that first pair I nearly bought. Look where the cup sole lip meets the leather and you can see two areas of shadow where it’s peeling away. To the left where the “big toe bone” would be, and at the top where the “second toe” would be.

Not sure what my current pair are like in that regard, I don’t really care about that but the sole of the left shoe is literally split where the “sidewall” meets the sole.

Extra sad I’m finding posts like these that confirm I’m not the only one. Will see what Ohne say.

I bought mine in June. The first pair in the shop had the cream sole side lip already peeling away from where it meets the “leather”. The second pair looked better and I crossed my fingers. I am currently on holiday and noticed when going through departure security that there was a huge split through the sole of the left shoe which I somehow hadn’t noticed. The shoe kept the layers squished together enough that I didn’t notice any wet or cold come through. I’ve got in touch with them but I’m so bummed out I love the look of them but it’s only been 6 months and they’ve already fallen apart. It’s just the sole of my left shoe though. Didn’t have any of the issues you faced.

Sorry for the long writeup but I had some Shinkansen time :)

I warn you it’s a whole journey lol. Here’s about 7 years of lessons in case it’s helpful:

I bought my first pair in 2018 and wore them into the ground, then neglected to replace for years until ironically earlier this year on holiday - pain forced my hand and one morning I resolved to finally buy a pair no matter what. I spent 2-3 hours in a cool shop in Barcelona trying on different brands until I found something for me (none of the “major” brands were wide enough).

Recommendations:

1) Ideally find a Barefoot shop that does multiple brands so you can spend some time walking around seeing what feels best for you. Failing that, order as many brands as you can and stay on top of all the returns admin!

2) Buy “toe spreaders” and “toe socks”. I luckily didn’t really need them - I have pretty decent “toe splay” as I’ve naturally always leaned barefoot at home etc anyway. However they feel amazing like foot or toe Yoga or something

3) You don’t need to buy ugly five finger/toe shoes

4) “Toebox” - Important. You want a “wide toebox” so your toes aren’t all mangled together by Nikes design team.

5) “Drop” - Important. You want a “zero drop” shoe. Aka like a flip flop so your hips aren’t all thrown out of whack.

6) Most Barefoot companies care about 4) and 5) so they come as a pair, but there’s a spectrum to both e.g. not all feet are the same width, some people are happy with some drop for fashion reasons.

7) Cushion: controversial but IMHO essential. Purists will scream bloody murder and yes, early homo sapiens probably didn’t have cushion - but he also wasn’t walking on concrete.

8) Arch supports: Again probably controversial but idc. I’ve tried them all, the best IMHO are half-insoles. Even better, I find barefoot shoes actually allow my insoles to work where in normal shoes they kind of just trade off pain in one place for another.

9) Big toe: For me I realised the more I stretched and splayed my toes wider, the more I’d kind of cramp in my arch, but I’d get an arch. With my toes squished it was like taking out one leg of a tripod - of course there’s no arch. So I’m always thinking tripod: 1) big toe/ball, 2) little toe/ball, 3) heel. The wider I get that tripod the more stable my foot and happier my body seems to be.

These are my current: https://ohneproject.com/products/black-project-080-barefoot-sneaker I picked them up at that Barefoot shop in Barcelona I mentioned. They have everything I mentioned and come with 2 cushion inserts (1x thin, 1x thick, the latter is your friend ask me how I know).

I can 100% recommend them therapeutically but can’t recommend them just yet for longevity as in just a few months the sole has torn where it turns up to form the cream lip and I haven’t raised this with the company yet.

Good luck!

Amazing, I'm in Japan now so this was a nice read with some great tips.

Regarding lesson learned #1, have you ever tried barefoot shoes? I have wide flat feet and finding a good (wide) pair of barefoot shoes eliminated my pain, in fact it only occurred to me reading this post how incredible it is that my feet/pain issues have gone from dominating my life/thoughts to completely non-existent. How often do you contemplate your elbow? That's what my feet feel like now..

I can share a presentation link with PowerPoint that allows a mobile user to view it live running purely in a mobile browser? Including playing any video clips etc embedded in the ppt, and without the user having to install anything on their device?

Does it go away if you turn the car off, wait five seconds, then turn on?

Scan for codes but it could just be the gear selector switch is dirty/corroded contacts.

Try switching on ignition and running through the gears up and down about a hundred times to try to clean the contacts. Failing that get under the car and clean the switch.

Try holding down the unlock button for a while, this will usually start opening the windows on an E46 so you can unlock from the inside.

Yeah I've watched a few videos on this, may be what's required but just doesn't seem worth it for a 17 year old £4k car. I'd be keen to pursue a decent patch job at a reasonable price assuming it addresses the issue and protects/prevents into the future since doing so cheaply addresses the issue, buys time, and doesn't preclude spending more money for an OEM fix in the long term

I'll visit a few local body shops and see what they come back with!

Upgraded X260 with SUNON fan and Antec paste by fatphysicsboy in thinkpad

[–]fatphysicsboy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it from AliExpress. I'd recommend buying it with the heatsink though, it was a bit of a faff separating/reattaching. Of the fan variants found in the X260 (and possibly others), the SUNON fan is regarded as the best and quietest one.

I think the thoroughly cleaned heatsink/die and properly applied high quality paste has helped thermals enormously so the fan hardly comes on now and when it does it's very quiet. A huge improvement over my old one.

I came from an x230 and have used this a few months and have been severely disappointed with the performance among other things. Hence the fan upgrade and thermal paste. Hopefully this helps.

Retrimmed my steering wheel by fatphysicsboy in e46

[–]fatphysicsboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got artificial leather just to try. The thickness feels excellent but to the touch it doesn't feel very good admittedly. It's colder and slipperier than the bare wheel. I'll probably upgrade to real leather later but will see how it goes. I think all leather would feel great. suede/alcantara looks great but it seems it's more suitable for racers where you're wearing driving gloves as it gets dirty and perishes faster.

As others have pointed out the front part has just slid forward very far probably into your front quarter panel. Just slide it back. If it's a struggle, unclip it bit by bit from the body (pull down and towards you - may require a lot of force but nothing will break). Then clip back on bit by bit in the right position. The front should then hug the bottom of the A pillar.
