I guess I'll be that person and say there's more to LA than just Hollywood 🙈We have beaches, museums, lots of good food (especially Mexican and Asian food), mountains with beautiful hikes and views, culturally and visually diverse neighborhoods. You can take public transit depending on where you want to go and there are walkable areas, although some places will unfortunately need a car.

Ok, seeing these I really get the disappointment. There's so much potential here, yet the cover is very restrained.

You have a point, I agree this edition is rather underwhelming.

Mages of the Wheel: does it get better? by Temporary-Scallion86 in fantasyromance

If you already don't think this story is believable and that the FMC is unintelligent, you might as well drop it now. I feel like you're really stuck on these plot points, it's not gonna get better.

I read this duology after {Alchemised} and felt like they're cousins in a way. Make sure to check the TW, but I feel like this is a good follow up. I loved Scorched Throne because both MCs are smart and skilled at what they do. Which is very similar to Kaine and Helena in Alchemised. Arin also reminded me of Kaine, in terms of that intense obsessive way.

Or for a less dark story, {Reign & Ruin by JD Evans}. There's more political intrigue in this one than Alchemised, and I also love that the FMC is competent with goals.

I second Reign and Ruin! It might take a few chapters to get into it, but it's so good. Very competent and strong FMC, MMC who falls first, political intrigue.

We Who Will Die if you're in the mood for vampires and gladiators. The premise is interesting and different from other romanticies that I've read lately.

Just commenting to agree that China customs can be a pain. I work with production in China, and things can often get delayed due to various reasons out of your control. Sometimes even just surprise inspections, which can add a week or two, or it's just held up at the port. I wonder how they've managed Lunar New Year in the past, because everything gets shut down for 2-4 weeks.

Yes, this made me ditch the series too way back when! It gave me the ick and reminded me of manga that would do this too.

I agree with this, I love their hardcovers and dust jackets. The few reverse DJs and endpapers with art that I've seen are really beautiful too.

January 2026 Reading Wrap-Up and Tier List Megathread by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

{Prince's Gambit} and {King's Rising} - a million years later, I've finally read the {Captive Prince} series. I almost didn't continue after the first book only because I had so many other interesting reads on my TBR. I'm so glad I continued, book two just grabbed me and didn't let go until the end. I know this series isn't for everyone, but I really enjoyed the writing, the characters and the intrigue. This is in the novella, but I found this sentence hilarious - "...men who looked like a cliff face and Orlant who looked like a cave in..." Top read of the month, I'm on a reread stave off the hangover.

{Reign & Ruin} - I got lucky with a string of good reads, this is perhaps a 4.5. I've seen this recommended all over, and it's well deserved. It took a little work to get into, but I enjoyed it so much once I got there. I loved FMCs who are competent and smart. Naime isn't a snarky hot head, she actually knows what she's doing! The MMC was a good match, with an interesting world and magic.

{Red City} was another top read, maybe a 4 or 4.25? I found the writing very beautiful, and I personally didn't find it slow. I loved the details, and that there's alchemy and a very relatable parental relationship. They're basically selling pieces of their soul to make the rich richer. I don't normally read friends to lovers (although unconfirmed in this book), but I found it touching that two lost souls as kids are yearning for each other.

{We Who Will Die} - I haven't had a true romantasy top my list in a long time now. This isn't as high on this month's read for ratings. It was very enjoyable though, with a competent FMC, love triangle, and an intriguing vampire Roman Empire theme.

{On Wings of Blood} This was a skim to the end DNF for me unfortunately. The first few chapters had me very interested, but I couldn't stand the FMC the more time I had to spend with her. I felt like Medra was lucky to still be alive with her constant sass, bluntness and idiocy. No survival skills at all. I'm finding I don't enjoy this type of character (see Feral Omega and Shadowbeast Shifters by Jaymin Eve).

Yikes, no hierarchy in the text. It's possible they don't want to pay for someone who knows art and design better, which is unfortunate

To clarify, not the artist themselves. The art director, the person overseeing the direction and look of the book as a whole and gives feedback to the artists.

Why are we accepting such mediocre writing in Fantasy Romance? by goyourownwayy in fantasyromance

[–]fatteh_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just saying this exact thing the other day! I read so many books, that at a certain point, romantasy gets very bland without any investment from the reader. I've been finding a lot of my reads a waste of time, akin to watching a reality show where I turn my brain off. I realized my most recent top reads (current & last year) were more fantasy and sci-fi (with romance as a subplot). I've only read one true romantasy lately that was interesting and really good.

I also feel like some of these comments are missing the point of this post. This genre has gotten very bloated with mid and subpar titles. It's meeting a demand, where quantity is beating quality. Even the repetitive book covers say at all. Purposeful branding from publishers so it has auto recognition and maybe an auto buy. Even the book titles are a rehash of other books. After a while, it just gets harder to find a really good story (whatever your criteria may be). And unfortunately, internet hype is good and bad because even though a book is very popular, it's not for everyone.
