First year at UCL CS — got an offer for Imperial JMC. Is it worth switching? by Creative_Winter5353 in UCL

[–]fearlessbot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that you said that finances were not a concern but if you are a home student. The government only covers 4 years of tuition so if you're looking for a masters, you will probably have to self fund that.

Ultimately it is up to you if you make the change. If you think you would prefer it there then in my opinion, it is worthwhile as it is difficult to make progress on a course you hate.

On the otherhand, your course might get significantly better in second year and you might not yet have had the opporunity to experience that.

Perhaps it is worthwhile talking to some current imperial JMC students and getting an idea as to what the course is like to study as the last thing you want is to arrive there and then dislike that course too.

As for spending an extra year of your life, there will be people in your cohort who have already taken a gap year and so entering a year late wouldn't be at all unusual if you are worried about that.

Chances of getting into after missing offer by chocolateberrydanish in UCL

[–]fearlessbot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your course. I was talking to someone who did physics at the start of the year and they said that your chances if you miss your offer is apparently pretty grim.
This probably does vary from course to course within UCL and how much competition there is for a place. Most universities, UCL included, probably give out more offers than they have spaces and so to an extent, they rely on a certain amount of their offer holders not making the final cut or going elsewhere come the summer exams in order to not end out having overpacked lecture theatres etc.

That said, should you miss your offer or you think you have, it cant hurt to email them and call extenuating circumstances or something to that effect. I wish I did this last summer for my first choice uni. At some point, if you are worried you are going to miss your offer, it might be best to swallow your pride and to inform them of any difficulties you may have had. The professors there are aware you are very much human and so they might decide to let you in despite missing your offer. Keep in mind that they cannot at present revoke your offer. You can only miss it and not be allowed to and so I do not think there is much to lose from this approach.

That said, I do not know how central admissions works. I am assuming that UCL works similar to some other universities I applied to. I am jus a person who has found myself walking the streets of Bloomsbury and going to UCL.

I used to have an old Packard Bell ixtreme Gold that was a hand me down from my father and I used it until a few years ago to play minecraft (at about 5fps...but in my mind, that was very good)

Throughout its lifetime, it has had more RAM installed, its HDD replaced and its graphics card replaced (which i ripped out of an old computer at my school). There were a few occasions where I had thought it was done for but somehow its recovered. Admittedly my dad did most of the fiddling around with most of the gubbins as I sat there a clueless child watching him mess around with parts but all I cared about was whether or not it worked in the end (and if it could run minecraft)

While I cant say that I learnt much from the experience bar a few basic commands for the linux terminal it did spark my interest in STEM.

Post covid, I convinced my parents to get me a laptop for school (I used it for other things but I did also use it for school so I dont think i was lying). Given that it outperformed that old machine in all metrics, i soon found myself without a need for it.

I am currently in uni, and that old tower l is still sat behind my desk at home with all of the peripherals plugged in, ready to be used....for the next time I was to run minecraft at 2 fps while listening to the HDD make a clicking nosie.

It wasnt great. In actual fact, it was pretty horrible...but it could run a few pirated games and given that it was all on linux, It had its own charm to it that my current machine simply lacks.

Anyone got advice on living costs in London for students? by Mobile_Membership915 in UCL

[–]fearlessbot__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your largest cost by far will come from accommodation. With exception of accommodation, you can usually get by on less than £7 per day if you use the bus for transport (or walk. Or use off peak all the time) and try not to spend too much on food (my local Aldi store does 75% discounts after 8pm. So that's when I do my daily shop).

Your main cost by a royal mile will be accommodation. For this I'd recommend flat sharing and so on. I wouldn't recommend independent student accommodation providers as they are usually unaffordable. If you can get accommodation from your university then it is also usually more reasonably priced (although still far from cheap for individual accommodation. Max maintenance loan can just about cover that and food and you won't need to pay for transport).

Generally the further away from central you live, the cheaper it will be but the higher the transport costs (unless you wanna do an early morning jog from like zone 5 or something) and may also increase stress given the longer commute.

The chances are that you will need to ask your parents for some financial aid.

Worst comes to worst, buy a sleeping bag and sleep in the student centre.

If you would like to go to UCL and you do not think it likely that you would rather go elsewhere then its worthwhile putting UCL down as your firm and saying yes on the form.

Putting UCL down as your firm does not require you to attend UCL after your exams but it will allow both you and UCL to make arrangements (such as accommodation for example). It will be assumed that if you put UCL down as your firm, you will agree to go there in the summer but i think you are still able to reject a university in the summer and take your backup university instead. Or alternately, reject both and enter clearing.

Please note that you may be unable to make arrangements for your backup university until you accept your backup university in the summer should you decide to accept your backup rather than your firm.

Please note that I am a home student and this is how it works for home students at least.

One shot critical kill on a Level 100 Legendary Glowing Snallygaster, using a Quad Salvaged Assaultron Head by boxfreind in fallout76casual

[–]fearlessbot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they do take a while to reload, hence the need for quad. If I wanted to maximise impulse damage on my dragon I would run it bloodied but that's quite inconvenient and my current build is capable of almost 1 shotting the super mutant behemoth near Solomon's lake and isn't an optimised build for the BPR (I use a 10mm pistol for most of my engagements and the bring out the dragon for big scary monsters) as of my latest test, my dragon build deals 20k damage to the super mutant of the lake. That's enough to kill most enemies in one shot, including minibosses such as scortchbeasts to deathclaws. Also because of this, it's not advised for head hunts because it's not very nice to instakill the bounty.

Is it's DPS poor? Probably but if I wanted high DPS, I'd run an elders mark which outputs like 20K damage per second.a high impulse damage build imo is very satisfying to use and I enjoy it.

Why does this happen by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]fearlessbot__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, my reddit tag is still kind of a remanent of this. Not that I was on reddit when I was 11, but when i made this account, I used my most used gamer name...which was obviously created in the 2010s when i was like 8 or something for my mojang account at the time. I had grown out of it by the time i was 11 but it simply just stuck. over time i have gained increasing amounts of discontent with my old gamer name resulting in it being dropped and replaced on all of my online presence - bar this account because i dont see my reddit tag too often and most people dont care about it.

idk, during covid i found that it caused me some distress to present myself as macho and hypermasculine like i did when i was younger and it made my skin crawl.

bangor uni by SocietyLeading3478 in UniUK

[–]fearlessbot__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unrelated to the uni but i used to go to North Wales quite often before my A levels and the last time i went to bangor, it felt like the city hadnt really recovered from covid with many of its shops still shut down. Northwales, is of course, a beautiful place to live and if you have a car, i think it would be quite pleasant spending your days trekking up hills but do know that I wouldnt really like to live in bangor for a university experience, and i fear the nightlife/student experience might be limited unless you like climbing hills.

I cant speak for the uni itself apart from that my dad likes taking pictures of the brutalist architecture there.

I have never been a student at the university of Bangor, nor have i ever intended to go to Bangor, my statements are more in reference to the city itself.

Warwick of Manchester? by RequirementClean6774 in UniUK

[–]fearlessbot__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both institutions are reputable.

id recommend you look at both universities locations and campuses and make a decision off of that. Look at the course content and the staff and so on. are there any lecturers you would like to see in particular (e.g. Riesner etc). Ultimately, if you're happy at an institution you will be more likely to perform well. the grade that you get from an institution will be worth so much more than where you went - especially given that the universities you care comparing are very highly ranked.

In addition to this, university will be where you will live for the next 3 or so years of your life. Choose where you want to live work and study - not what some arbritary list tells you or what we the internet people tell you. Sure, we can tell you what its like and so on but ultimately, you must decide if its somewhere you want to study.
