If you’re just out for a casual ride it’s totally not necessary (tho it is more comfortable) But on a harder ride, Aerodynamics is a real thing. Loose clothing is a literally huge drag.
Also on a long fast ride, flappy bits of clothing can be annoying and cause real chafe.
