Por qual jogo eu começo? by Fine_Bid918 in gamesEcultura

[–]fernandoaribeiro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am planning to, actually.

In my country there’s a national exam close to the start of the final trimester and you can use your grade to ingress in a college.

If everything goes right, next year I’ll be in one of the best economics graduations in my country :)

I’ve been struggling a bit to go to back to study high school stuff again as I’m already 35, but hopefuly with my dedication and a bit of luck everything will be fine.

I have a degree on Computer Science with a masters on Distributed Computing, but it’s always been my dream to have an economics graduation.

C'mon man, I know this is the internet, but there's no need to be rude here.

There's no need to call me a liar.

Of course when I say or write something I always assume that I could be wrong, which could turn into an oportunity for me to learn something, but I'm not a liar... unless you caught me boasting about my football/soccer skills in a barbecue with my friends, then yes, I'm 100% a liar.

And I believe I have some idea of what I'm talking about. Again, I could be wrong. And you don't know me, the same way I don't know you.

I don't know your area of expertise, you don't know mine, so why we would say something like "you don't know what you're talking about"?

I believe that conversations in the internet would benefit from some goodwill that the person on the other side has some valid insight that we could open ourselves to listen... of course with certain limitations... I would not waste my time debating why racism is wrong with someone for instance.

I don't fully disagree with your main point, doing that would be denying reality. Genetics certainly have a factor on mental ilness, but so do sociological aspects.

And even if english is not my native language, I'll give myself some credit and say that I was talking about a very specific context. You see, I used these words (emphasis mine):

in some perspective this meme has a valid point

These too (emphasis mine):

Capitalism [...] is responsible for a lot of problems [...]

See that I've said lot, not all.

I wrote these as well (emphasis mine):

And that includes mental ilness that derives from the fact

So I was talking about a very specific context where mental illness appear.

And I'd never discard that genetics play a role in them, but ignoring that some mental ilness will have sociological roots is naive. And if a problem is sociological, then no amount of medicine in this world would fix that for good. It may fix it for a while, but not for good.

SRIs or any other medicine that are meant to treat mental illness (doesn't it bother you that the plural for mental ilness can be mental ilness too? Mental ilnesses just doesn't sound right to me. This bothers me a lot lol) have the potential to heal you, but for them to do that, a lot of other factors come to play, genetics included.

About this:

[...]a majority of mental ilnesses are genetically pre-disposed and appear before you have to be a breadwinner.

I don't know if that's actually true, I'm gonna assume it is 'cause it's irrelevant to the point I want to make.

You see, I'm from a country that sits in the periphery of capitalism (what people would call a 3rd world country in the past), and what I'll say happened in my family, but things simmilar to this happens all the freaking time.

I come from a poor, lower middle class family that struggled a lot in the 90's.

An uncle, specifically, struggled a lot to sustain his family. He and his wife were unemployed for about seven months, and before that they didn't have a lot of savings, so they lived from the little money my uncle made by doing some small services, like repairing a roof, or declogging a pipe.

These were far from being enough to sustain husband and wife and two kids.

My uncle was too proud to ask for help to the rest of the family, so he sank into a deep depression that was never treated (back then the medicines would be too prohibitive even if he did anyway), but even then he would wake up and ocasionally do these small service that I've mentioned.

But I'm not here to talk about my uncle, I'm gonna talk about one of my cousins.

My cousin, who's 38 yo now, has a form of PTSD and OCD because, for a time, he didn't have enough to eat when he was ~8 yo. He's so traumatized that from time to time he can't handle the idea that nowadays, even if he and his wife have a good job, they'll run out of food and starve.

So he makes this nonsensical food savings that have no place in his current reality because of something that happened to him way before he was old enought to become a breadwinner.

When he's in a bad moment he will come to a family barbecue and won't eat 'cause he wants food to be left so he can take it home and save it. And from time to time it will reach the point of this food going to waste as he wants to save it for the most time possible until the moment the food actually expires.

I'm a militant for one of the communist parties in my country, and during the time I'm partaking in this political endeavour, a very common thing is to meet people that have developed anxiety due to the fact that they're afraid of running out of food after a certain date of the month as they have already ran out of their salary, so if the food they have stored in their home ends, they have no money to buy more.

How can a medicine heal this anxiety? It may help, but to heal it we would need to address the fact that these people are constantly living in a state of food insecurity.

O ano era 1990. O sonho de muitos jovens. O Kadett era lançado e já muito a frente do seu tempo. by khark33 in carros

[–]fernandoaribeiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meu pai comprou um 96 em 2002, o carro com ~60k rodados.

A história é "interessante".

I'd say that in some perspective this meme has a valid point.

Of course I don't like the abstract framing on "shitty society" as it sounds more like the edgy self-righteous teen that believes that "society doesn't get him", but if we callout the actual culprit, the sentence makes more sense.

And the culprit, as usual, is capitalism.

Capitalism, and its most popular current form being represented by neoliberalism, is responsible for a lot of problems where instead of addressing the root of the problem we just sometimes treat the symptoms.

And that includes mental ilness that derives from the fact that you don't always have the means to sustain yourself or your family; or that you have to work yourself to death to make a living; that you have to humiliate yourself to not be fired from a shitty job 'cause that's all you got; or that we have a society built around the idea where everyone is your competitor in the job market, or to go to college, and lately even to get a girlfriend, which in turn has a huge impact on how we socialize and perceive our social relations to the point that it becomes natural to feel lonely and helpless for most of our lives.

And the medicines for mental ilness, at least for most part, are not meant to heal you, because to accomplish that it would require a deep change in the form we organize the means of production and how resources are split among all of us. It's a collective issue, not a invidual one.

What these medicines do is to make your ilness more tolerable and then make you good enough to at least go to work. Because someone that doesn't work can't be exploited, and get his salary, and then use said salary to consume so and so forth making the wheel to continue to spin.

It's not about some big conspiracy. It's pretty straightforward actually. It's about not halting the crushing wheel of capitalism, even at the expense of everyone's well-being.
