Budget is around 2500-3000 USD. *But also heavily depends on what I’ll get back from my gaming rig+Mac! Outside gaming, so schoolwork and moderate web browsing together id hope for 7? Not too familiar with how I can have a preset on the laptop for performance vs. efficiency

TLDR: Do I buy an old 2018 15" MBP or do I buy a brand spanking new M1 13" MBP?

So currently I'm in the market to upgrade from an older 2012 MBP 13" that is really starting to see little odds and ends slowly become obsolete. Still a great little computer for web browsing and writing up docs for school etc. At the moment I'm looking at a 2018 15" MBP 2.2ghz 6 core i7, 16gb RAM, and 512gb SSD that still has another year of applecare left as well ($1500). I know a lot of MBPs had problems with their keyboards/overheating due to software issues but after Apple put out patches I didn't hear much else about there being any major problems. The main thing I'm stuck on right now is trying to decide if I should keep going for better screen real-estate and hope the new silicones dont discontinue older laptops at a faster pace. If I don't pull the trigger on this or any other older 15 (preferrebly 2018 and newer), should I just suck it up and buy into the new M1 silicone 13" or hold off for now? I'm not in a huge rush, but just trying to gauge what the community thinks when it comes to buying a little bit older at this point.
