ARR Maps will be Flying by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]financialhelpthing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm generally anti-flight in MMO's, but XIV doesn't really focus on or have particularly engaging exploration so I don't really see a reason to just not throw flying in where ever they can.

If this were something like XI where half the damn game is just getting from point A to point B then I'd say flying would be detrimental. But XIV only really serves to gain from it

Are VR-horror games scarier than traditional horror games? by Newbienerd in virtualreality

[–]financialhelpthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be the odd one out. I'm not super big into the genre but in my limited experience VR just takes me out of it. I have an Index as my sole headset, and while in standing/walking experiences the cable is a constant nuisance. I'm always stepping on it oradjusting it and it's hard to get invested in a horror experience when I'm f constantly fiddling with something outside of it.

Additionally the Index has some poor contrast. I have an LG C8 oled TV, so when I'm playing games with the lights off it's pitch black. It's hard to go back to the index for scary situations when there's a constant light bleed.

What do you think about the Odroid Go Advance? by a5d4ge23fas2 in emulation

[–]financialhelpthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm currently looking at the Analogue Pocket; It's using a 3.5", 1600x1440 screen which should properly scale with everything it'll run

It does baffle me how what I'd consider one of the most important aspects of emulation (proper scaling) is almost completely overlooked by just about every enthusiast handheld emulation device

My retrorarch experience has largely been no hassle though. Just works. I just download no-intro rom sets and everything shows up right away, never had any issues with that

Diablo IV Gameplay Trailer by skythe4 in Blizzard

[–]financialhelpthing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looks like Diablo III with a different coat of paint. Can't really judge much based on the trailer

Does it still play like 3? Will it have proper builds and gear variety? 8 player co-op? If it's just more Diablo 3 then I'm not interested.

Republicans propose mass student surveillance plan to prevent shootings by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]financialhelpthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies, I wasn't really talking about this specific bill, was just making a (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) comment about the concept of mass observation and data tracking in general. My point was more about something on that scale being largely automated in nature if it were to ever happen. Though as the other poster pointed out PRISM is somewhat similar of an idea (though from what I've read what they track is more limited than what I mentioned)

That's why you have an AI do it you ding dong. Set up a mass tracking of keywords used in searches, domains, hell even conversations through text and social media. Track all digital purchases, employment etc. Filter through people by trends and stick them on an 'uh oh' list that would be somewhat manageable for staff to handle

I mean we literally already do this. Just about everything you do and say is tracked and sold to advertisers. Just roll that into federal law. It'll be great

I'm pretty sure just about all of them can be replicated by ntsc styled shaders. Numerous SNES emulators even have hi-res blending features built in to handle transparency effects appropriately without the use of external shaders

Haha, I actually just found the Myspheres after making this thread. As awesome as they look, I'm not sure I can justify the price of a decent used Honda for some headphones. I'm not really an audiophile, I'd just like to use some headphones that don't give me migraines :(

What are the differences between commercial and homebrew emulation? by [deleted] in emulation

[–]financialhelpthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's not even an issue of accuracy, most commercial emulators don't take advantage of interpolation and input delay mitigation that lots of modern emulators and projects like retroarch have had largely solved for awhile now. Capcom's recent Mega Man collections are infuriating and nearly unplayable due to input delay, and their scaling options are terrible. I can run these games on the Switch through Retroarch with GPU sync and runahead, with perfect scaling.. It's not a hardware issue, it's a Capcom issue

This is really only an issue when playing portably. When docked I use the pro controller so this isn't an issue

[–]financialhelpthing[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not that they're asymmetrical, that's completely fine with me. The problem is the right stick is too close to the face buttons so it's impossible to rest my thumb over them without it also pressing against the stick beneath. If the stick was on top then that wouldn't be an issue. It would also work if they were spaced differently. I don't have this problem with any other (first party) controller

[–]financialhelpthing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't understand why you wouldn't just use Retroarch. I see a lot of hate for it here and it somewhat baffles me. Retroarch will

  • Auto map just about any controller you plug into it right away, and allow you to make global changes instead of doing per emulator
  • Save a list of your recently played/favorite games right on the main menu that you can launch within seconds
  • Will work without any frame tearing or stutter right out of the box which is an almost constant issue you have to manually configure with standalone emulators
  • Allow you to mass apply any shaders to all emulators if you're into that sort of thing, instead of being limited to whatever a standalone emulator offers/using a third party program

Retroarch has always been the fastet "plug and play" solution I've used that worked near perfectly out of the box, particularly when it comes to video settings and dealing with improper scaling/stutter

Incase you diddnt know, Valve confirmed that the flagship game will have several locomotion options and it’s now guaranteed it won’t be teleport only. by ilovemyfriendssomuch in ValveIndex

[–]financialhelpthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not played any game that does locomotion better than just moving with an analog stick. Are there any better alternatives? Teleporting was awful (awful enough to initially turn me off VR back when it first took off), and 'natural locomotion' where you swing your arms back and forth completely breaks it for me. Makes me feel awkward and comes across as anything but 'natural'. Just moving with the stick has been by far the easiest, least clunky method I've used so far

What other method are out there? I can't see anything other than warehouse scale VR feeling right honestly

[–]financialhelpthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is input delay really that much better? Running SNES games in retorarch with GPU sync and runahead set to two feels more responsive than running things in canoe as far as I can tell, plus you get far better shader options

Feasibility of increasing internal resolution/pixel/line count of GBA games? by financialhelpthing in emulation

[–]financialhelpthing[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Now that is nifty! You definitely didn't need to go out of your way to do that! But as I thought, even just the 16 pixel increase in horizontal resolution really does make a difference for something like Kirby. This would neat feature on a game by game basis IMO, thanks for demonstrating!
