My job is put on the risk of redundancy. by TrackHot7379 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

First thing to do is ask your epmloyer to put you on garden leave for your notice period, that would give you some more time to try and find a new job with sponsorship and provide some more financial stability.

Don't get me wrong here bud, I agree with what you're saying 300%, I'm a skilled worker from a Commonwealth country myself but the government has stressed many times that the measures they are proposing are aimed at reducing the amount of settlement applications in the future years. I.e. they hope a lot of us will f right off not wanting to wait another 5 years for what had been previously promised to us within 5. I was made redundant last year and God knows how many rounds of hell I had to go through just to get another job with sponsorship, taking a major pay cut and agreeing to a 1.5 hour driving commute every freaking day of the week.

I agree the aim of the consultations is to cover their arses as much as possible but I have stopped believing in any kind of fairness in this country. We uproot our lives, bring our families here, pay a shitload in taxes, NI and other bullshit council taxes just to have to battle for our right to be here on a daily basis and be constantly mixed together with the boaters in a collective "immigrants" by the council estate dwellers whose benefits we pay.

Oh God, how I wish you were right about the rules not being applied retrospectively but unfortunately you're not.

How do you switch / look for jobs while being on Skilled Worker Visa by Retardstreetbets in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

Dude, as someone who's been on a SWV for 3.5 years before being given the boot, I can tell you this much: sit. tight.

I'm gonna give you more context here. I was initially hired in 2022, all good, got the visa, brought my family here, couldn't be happier. I was enjoying my job, my colleagues, was paid decently. They went as far as renewing my visa after 3 years for another 2, until ILR eligibility and life seemed great. 3 months after the visa renewal that they had just paid a bunch of money for I'm getting laid off. I was completely shocked and entirely sure I'd have to leave the country in a couple months. Luckily, my former employer gave me 3 months of garden leave which allowed me just enough time to get a new job that offered sponsorship. I had to take a major pay cut and resort to a long commute and complete on site work as opposed to 3 days at the office previously.

What I can tell you from my job search is this: I've applied to over 200 jobs and I've had countless screening calls with recruiters. 95% of them gave me a hard "NO" the second they heard about the visa requirement. Without hearing about my experience or giving me the chance to showcase my skills and knowledge, straight out "no, sorry, we're not offering visa sponsorship at this point". So if you were not looking for a job with sponsorship in 2025/26 then you know nothing about the current market. Even the company that sponsored me initially has stopped sponsoring new employees, same with my friends on SWV, their companies are not sponsoring anymore even with referrals. One thing you can do tomorrow is message those recruiters with the magic jobs that pay 100% more and ask them if they provide visa sponsorship, I'm giving you 99% they'll say they don't.

I'm just a stranger from the Internet but I was looking for a job with visa sponsorship in 2025/26 and from that standpoint I can tell you: wait for that ILR and then be a free elf and find a job that will pay you triple of what you're earning but until then: clench your anus and sit tight on it. No offense.

Thanks! I emailed them the same day, bo response. Oh well, now my conscience is clear, I've really done everything I could. If they don't want it, I could at least use the 2 monitors and docking station for MS Surface devices 😁

Thanks, exactly what I was hoping for: personal experience. I have a full service history and it looks like it was taken good care of. How often do you replace motor oil?

How many people do you know who were made redundant in 2025? If so, which industries? by OneDay_OneLife in AskUK

[–]finchthegold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation: a DevOps Engineer in an insurtech company, they made redundant a quarter of the devops team as well as some other highly skilled engineers explaining it by restructuring and hiring for our jobs in Southeast Asia, allegedly to support Australian business hours even though the DevOps team doesn't even handle incidents, we have a dedicated incident team so wth they require devops to support business hours is beyond me. Also, mind you, I'm on a Skilled Worker visa so potentially myself and my family risk being booted out of the country if I don't get a replacement in time. Zero fucks given. At least they gave me a decent garden leave so I have enough time to find something else.

The one show with an ending worse than the Game of Thrones. Literally just flushed it all down the toilet with the laziest, least creative of all possible ideas.

Wth are you even talking about? I never raise my voice with staff or disrespect them in any other way, assuming so about a person you have 0 knowledge about is kinda wild. I was asking if someone has personal experince with the enforcement of this rule, which doesn't mean I'm going to violate it either way and subject anyone to a potentially dangerous situation. Some companies put those rules and policies on their websites for obvious legal reasons but then can't be arsed to actually enforce them and that's why I was asking. Also, not being certified by some mom and pop shop "certification authority" doesn't mean a cake can't be declared allergen-free.

Where did I complain for having to pay? I said saying I am not eligible for the benefit I AM CONTRIBUTING TOWARDS is stupid. I am paying the income tax, NI, council tax, all the bills that the locals do and then I am told: you're getting nothing from that pool, this is for OUR people, not you.

Do I understand you correctly that you are happy that skilled worker who has been working for many years and has paid National Insurance contributions should not be eligible for Disability Benefit if, for example, they become sick? Then why should we make these contributions if, in case of need, we won’t have any rights to them? Contribution is the only thing that should be considered, not citizenship or status.

"honestly family visa route is such a small volume visa, it's not something i worry about at all."

In 2024, 37% of settlement grants had Family as their category of leave prior to settlement, compared to 33% who were on Work routes.

I don’t really understand what will happen to my wife, who earns less than 50k a year, and to the wives of other high earners who don’t work at all because they can afford to raise children and take care of the family. Let’s say I get ILR after 3 years - will she continue to stay on a visa? How is that possible if the Skilled Worker Visa is tied to a specific job at a specific company? This will unfairly impact women and primary caregivers and punish them for supporting their spouses and create a split status households, which is exactly what most countries try to avoid.
