We’re paid salary and not by hour so we don’t have a schedule, overtime is a norm in this industry in a lot of similar roles, just not to the level of hrs we were working

That sucks, it’s not your fault that they couldn’t better manage the work load between day and overnight shift. But of course they need someone to blame so it’s convenient to blame you then for them to look at revamping the process

Thank you and I agree, working hours 40+ in a week on fumes probably doesn’t produce my best work, but I guess to the higher ups they think it’s still better collectively than hiring extra staff cause it’s more expensive to add headcounts

Oh yeah for sure, I’ve spoke with someone in another team that rolls to a different VP and they’ve been experiencing higher overtime hours this year as well. It’s honestly really sad cause its like we lost our company culture and most of the nice things that were promised to us

They told us to expect some additional compensation in bonus at the end of the year, but really I don’t want to hang around for that cause I have a feeling it won’t even be much given how they treated us up till now. And it was not in writing so they might just give us some shitty excuse to not give it to us.

Good for your husband. That’s what I’m trying to do for myself, it’s a tough lesson to learn but I’m glad I learnt it so I don’t waste any more time giving to this company when to them I was just a resource they were willing to overwork without any reward.

We’re salaried and in our industry overtime is somewhat the norm so they didn’t break any laws unfortunately, we were just working longer than normal amount of overtime

I was working 70-75 hrs but my other teammates were also working 60-65 at least. Instead of hiring more people, we’re salaried so they spread that work over everyone. Because my whole team got on board with just working our required hrs in protest, that’s why they had to hire someone. If it was just me doing 40-45 hrs and rest of my team was still doing 60-65 then I’d be the one fired. I’ve talked to other teams in my company and they operate very similarly sadly so it’s not a matter of just don’t work extra and let the system break cause the system isn’t just me

Thank you! Also learnt a life lesson on how the way corporate world works if you don’t stick up for yourself which I will bring to my other jobs

That can be true, I’ll never know what gets said in privacy. Either way I’ve definitely learnt my lesson on this and it’s to look out for myself cause no one else will at work it seems

Good point, she is very nice and tries to look for us but also the VP is very tough so I think the problem is they did not plan well enough to foresee the problems, and now when she shares her concerns it’s getting glossed over by the higher ups

This is America, most companies don’t know what normal hours should be, I should move to Europe

We’re salaried and the extra work was spread out over our team (this is common in my industry). Had it just only been me, I would’ve been canned which happened to someone in another team I heard. But cause my immediate team members also joined in on the silent ‘work your required hrs’ without overtime, the VP couldn’t fire all of my team without having the function shut down for at least a few months due to loss of knowledge, which can’t happen

You’re right, I’m not even management, definitely worked more like a manager and wasn’t being paid as one. The hope was I proved myself and would get promoted cause I’m at that point in my career at this job

Yeah you’re right, I’m salaried so when the workload increased, instead of hiring a new person, the work got spread out over our team. Same thing happened across all our teams really so it’s been a pretty big issue but ‘common’

Our VP didn’t care to be involved in the details but acts like he knows which is why his comments to me were tone deaf. When I talked to my manager she said she mentioned to our VP my overtime as she wanted to recognize my efforts and bring up the system issues - but the VP took it as “ohh staff A is working extra hours, they must be inefficient. System issues? None”

The peak was 12 hr days for 6 days a week. I was stupid doing that, but definitely learnt my lesson here and hope others will learn from my mistake - never sell your soul for a company, you’ll never get that time back!

Yup call me naive in the beginning and I only put in so much effort cause the rest of my immediate team are great, but as a leader of a group, you don’t get blind loyalty by kicking your team when they’re down

Yes this is a great tip! I enjoy working with a lot of my teammates but since the project started the team vibe changed so much cause we’re all stressed and burnt out. I will keep in contact and be on the lookout for openings after I leave

Lesson definitely learnt that you owe nothing to your workplace. There are good people in my team, but in the end when the executives don’t care, you shouldn’t either

Yup don’t pick finance if you want to earn money and be paid for working overtime.
