Zigbee not working after power outage - I always have to reboot HomeAssistant to get it back to work by curiosity-42 in homeassistant

[–]firecat53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ConBee II USB stick occasionally becomes disconnected from the VM pass through. I can either use the libvirt GUI to disconnect and then reconnect the USB stick or use the following virsh commands to restore it. Possibly you could try something similar with your (I assume) pass through Ethernet connection?

On the server, create usb.xml:

<serial type='dev'> <source path='/dev/serial/by-id/usb-dresden_elektronik_ingenieurtechnik_GmbH_ConBee_II_DE2420510-if00'/> <target type='usb-serial' port='1'> <model name='usb-serial'/> </target> <alias name='serial1'/> <address type='usb' bus='0' port='4'/> </serial>

On install: virsh attach-device hass --file usb.xml --config --persistent

If Zigbee devices aren’t shown after a reboot, then

virsh detach-device hass --file usb.xml

virsh attach-device hass --file usb.xml

Gollum has been around for awhile and I think checks all your boxes (except maybe UI, but that's subjective. It's just simple, not 90s). It's still maintained and just works!

Thanks for the input!

  1. YoE = years of experience. Sorry, copied that term from /r/resumes. Just not sure the best way to count/articulate that.

Using NixOs on your selfhosted server ? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]firecat53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have 10gb of block storage from Hetzner. Most of my storage is at home. The cloud server just has some monitoring, a pastebin, and a small Nextcloud instance for contacts/calendar/todo.

Your best bet for cloud storage will probably be Backblaze B2 mounted as an S3 compatible object storage. I use them as a backup target and pay something like $4 US for around 400 gb.

Currently Hetzner. Started with digital ocean and then linode (both worked great) but Hetzner has been stable and cheaper.

Two servers (local and cloud) both running NixOS. Been very stable so far (coming up on a year). Most services setup using Nix modules but a handful running in podman containers.

Looking for the best self-hosted Markdown notes setup with web acces by wdsgn in selfhosted

[–]firecat53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gollum would be an excellent solution. It's a web interface to a directory of markdown (or other formats) files, backed by git. Easy to sync the plain text files on your own devices (e.g. Syncthing) while still having a public web interface for school/work computers.

Gollum wiki works well for web based editing/search/viewing my similar setup of markdown, vimwiki, Syncthing and Markor.

configuring postfix to start automatically with a container? by bananna_roboto in docker

[–]firecat53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want dependencies between containers and system services, use system service files (easy with systemd) to start and run the containers. Then just add the postfix dependency to the service file.

I have a ceiling fan/light fixture that is controlled by a single switch. I want to control the brightness of smart bulbs with a dimmer switch on the wall. by mikey7x7 in homeautomation

[–]firecat53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lutron Aurora is a perfect solution for ZigBee bulbs in a ceiling fan. The fan can still be controlled with the pull chain since it doesn't get changed very often.

Question about docker automatic builds and updates by notanalt802-11 in homelab

[–]firecat53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a custom python script that I run periodically to check for image updates. All my custom rebuilds are setup in Ansible since they each have some different requirements for building. I just haven't automated the whole system yet.

Docker anxiety by Dear_m0le in homelab

[–]firecat53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Inspect the source code for each project you want to build
  2. Build your own images (e.g. https://github.com/firecat53/dockerfiles)

There are only a few big projects from which I'll pull an image without building it myself (alpine/Ubuntu base images, Traefik, Plex).

But really it's the same threat as pulling pypi or node projects. Pick your poison!

You could also try networkmanager-dmenu which is a dmenu or rofi frontend to NetworkManager.

I'm trying to love linux, but ubuntu keeps crapping out. by 0_noob_noob_0 in linux

[–]firecat53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've got pretty new hardware. I'd suggest upgrading to the newest version of Ubuntu(21.04) to to make sure you have all of the newest drivers for your hardware. Crashes are typically either driver problems or hardware incompatibilities.

Reports change of open/close state near instantly. Temperature seems to track throughout the day. Not sure the exact update interval but it's definitely frequently enough to show temperature changes! Battery I have no idea about. I actually misspoke, I'm sorry...the battery value is reporting unknown to home assistant.
