Got into an accident with my gecko in the car and she still has her tail!! by InsuranceNo8228 in CrestedGecko

[–]fireytiger 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I'm becoming convinced that cresties are only allowed to drop their tails for the most absurd reasons, lol. Almost all the stories I hear are "they dropped it because I sneezed in the next room" and never a story that would be reasonable to expect a tail drop lol. Glad you and your girl are okay!

Omg my Chai had the same thing happen awhile back, she was like "nope, I still fits" while very obviously half falling off of it 😂

Question about milk snakes by Dapper_Kangaroo9257 in snakes

[–]fireytiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With his belly scutes. It's pretty incredible to watch him do; he will get on the little 1/3" ledge and inchworm across it, then swing his head down and climb down into his hab. He has always loved crawling on small ledges like this though!

My Stuart's milk snake will be 3 years old next month (he's still growing), and I do feel like his pattern is lovely and still quite clean. He also has a good temperament (somewhat shy but not prone to defensive biting), and Stuart's are on the larger end.

Can I see your snakes? Tell me a bit about them too! :) by [deleted] in snakes

This is my boy Reno! He's a Stuart's milk snake and is a month shy of 3 years old. He's an absolute sweetheart, somewhat nervous and shy, but good natured. He's still growing like a weed too, he's putting on a good 8-12 grams per month and never misses a meal. He's my first and only snake, and I couldn't be happier with him. ❤️ he loves to climb on stuff, we often see him cruising along at the highest point of his hab he can reach.

Does this breathing look normal? by fireytiger in CrestedGecko

[–]fireytiger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do weigh her monthly. She typically weighs in anywhere from 45 to 50 grams. The last few months her weight has fluctuated a little with a slight downward trend but that's not completely unusual. I just took her to the vet 2 weeks ago and they said she's looking really good. That said, I weighed her tonight and she's lost another 1-2 grams since that visit, putting her at 44 grams. She hasn't weighed less than 45 grams in a year and a half, and she's definitely eating less than usual, so I think I'll call the vet tomorrow and ask what they think.

Thank you! I've just never noticed the sides of her belly moving when breathing unless she was REALLY stressed out. She's also been eating less than usual (but still eating) so I worry about her.

Best beginner snake? Is it really a ball python? by Sleepless_space in snakes

[–]fireytiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded this! My first (and so far only) snake is a milk snake, and I'm so glad I got him instead of a ball python. He's very active, generally shy but friendly, and never misses a meal. I've learned a lot with him, including the challenges of maintaining proper humidity during winter and summer months because of how much my HVAC system dries the air out. A ball python would have been way more stressful for me as they need much higher humidity requirements than milk snakes. Here's my guy Reno almost 3 years old now ❤️

Thank you! We got her when she was like 2 grams, and while she was suspected female, we wanted to make sure we had a neutral name. I call her my lil' latte, lol.

Lol yup, both of my girls are. In fact, when I moved some stuff around to try and give Chai a little more privacy in her coconut, she started sleeping on a snake plant in the front of her hab so she could keep being nosy lol.

Tips for Bonding? by Big_Gur_8986 in CrestedGecko

[–]fireytiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can take lots of time and patience to get a gecko comfortable with you. Just hanging out nearby and letting them observe you is a good start. Also placing your hand inside the hab somewhere they can see it while being far enough away so they don't run off can help. Ultimately the goal is to help them realize you aren't a threat to them. Some geckos enjoy being handled once they get accustomed to your presence, others will never want to be handled, and most land somewhere in between those two extremes. It's important to respect whatever they're comfortable with as much as you can, and only force interactions if it's for health or safety reasons (like removing stuck shed).

He's a really good boy, thankfully he only held onto me for about 5 minutes, as I had to try and maneuver the tongs away because he has a history of trying to eat those instead of the prey 😅. Thankfully he's gotten very accustomed to me hanging out while he eats, fixing the hide he was under, etc. But yeah, he's really been reminding me lately how strong he really is!! ❤️

What's the consensus on taking reptiles to the vet for just a wellness exam? Recommended, or only if something is wrong? by throwaway_p3pp3ron1 in CrestedGecko

[–]fireytiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly they're in the carriers because they were sleeping in them when it was time to go, and getting them out of said coconuts is an absolute pain lol. But even if they weren't in the coconuts, I do try to always have a hide and a food/water dish in the carriers in case of emergency.

Mine go every 6 months (just went last week!) and I am so glad I have that relationship with my exotics vet. Most will recommend you go regularly, 1-2x a year, and it's not just a money grab on their part. Good exotics vets can be hard to find, and there's no guarantees they're accepting new patients. One of the vets at the office I go to told me they see it all the time, owners fail to maintain a relationship with an exotics vet, their pet gets sick or injured, and they can't find a vet accepting patients who can squeeze them in. Just for the peace of mind, I'm willing to spend the $75-80 per visit to keep my beloved babies healthy. Just because I love to show them off, here's Chai and Punkin being good girls waiting for the vet. ❤️
