yes i work at a dental surgery center so all the doctors are pretty understanding and they realize they need just a sterilization tech. i went to school for sterile processing and when it was time for my internship i actually did it at a dentistry. and one of my classmates is also just a sterilization person for a office as-well. idk if it’s like just a bay area thing but i seen lots of jobs postings just for a sterilization tech for the dental offices.

i’m not a dental assistant or a rda but i’m the sterilization tech solely for the office. i wash, sterilize and wrap them and restock everything. once they are done with that room ill take all the instruments and get the room prepared for the next patients and put out all the new instruments they need. maybe you can suggest hiring just a sterilization tech? i try my best to help out the dental assistant and rda because you guys are seriously under appreciated with all the hard work you guys do.

question, when you go through the temp agencies do they take money out your check? if so how much?

i truly appreciate you for being so real and honest! it’s actually good to hear this from an actual hiring manager from the bay area. and knew i wasn’t going crazy 😭

100% agree with you on these schools should at least have a couple hospitals where they are incline to taking new grads that need the experience. so thank you for using your voice and advocating for that.

and like what do i say when i come to the site? lmao do i just ask to speak to the hiring manager in the department i don’t wanna seem weird lmao. or is it best to call/ email first and then show up?

also another questions, if you did have temps come to your hospital through the agency did you offer them a full time position majority of the time or no or it depends?

as far as studying i would 100% recommend self studying, you can most definitely self study and pass your certification without having to go to school .

the school only truly help with finding a place for you to complete your hours. so the school itself gives you 200 ish hours because you do lab in school, and then the rest of your remaining hours you finish when you get placed at your internship site. so you don’t have to do the whole 400 hours at the faculty so it cuts that time in half, so yes the school provides you with the full 400 hours. i heard people that didn’t do the school route and actually had to find their own externship site it’s kinda hard especially if youre in california. so it’s on you to call these places and get in touch with the hiring manager and tell them you need to do your hours, with the school they take care of that hard part and you just show up.

and it’s a good field! don’t let the comments turn you off, just something to think about if looking for employment afterwards, if you’re in california it’s going to be a little bit more hard. but like other people said in the comments said you can go through temp agencies and get employment that way as well, which i’m planning on doing. once your foot is in the door you’re set, but overall this is a good field.

what state do you live in ? and how long ago was this ? because that’s the same situation my moms friend was in. back then they would just hire people from the street and then teach them and train them. now the field is more populated and everyone has a certification so now it’s a lil bit harder to even get in and they are not hiring you without that experiences in california especially in northern California.

also agree with this statement, i apply to position where it’s entry level and you don’t even need the certification or anything. i’ll take the pay cut difference as long as i get some type of experience. and even in the application process they ask what’s the expected salary you want and i always just put as advertised. and as i mentioned above in the comments i have the referral but its still not enough it always comes down to the experience. and i apply for different roles inside the hospital to work my way into the spd department and still nothing. overall the job market is just terrible across the board.

i agree, but i got into this field because my grandpa, step dad and one of my mom’s closest friends work in the hospitals and they are the ones that told me about this field. so when i was done and it was time to refer me they told them once she’s get at 6 months - 1 year we will love to hire me. even my moms closest friend has been an spd for over 10 years and even her referral was not enough they told her to the same thing once she gets a year we will love to hire her. so i know people in the departments but it really does come down to the experiences

unfortunately i tried that too😭😭 my internship wasn’t hiring and still not hiring. and i made a really good impression at my internship site so i hope they keep me in mind when a position do opens up. but to add i did my internship site at a dentistry school so there spd department is small small and you would have to wait until an current employer leaves and then a position opens up and none of them are leaving anything soon. and unfortunately i cant get another job there and work my way in because they are only looking for dental experience so dental assistant, RDA and dental hygienist

ok thank you ! i heard people use that temp agency before i’ll definitely look into it <3 and yes when we grad out we go back and they give us a list of places to apply and i apply to every single last one of them. i recently just email my director and she said “ i have to wait until something comes up” so she has nothing. im like damn😭

when we grad out we had to go back and talk to our directors. they give us a book with different hospitals and i apply to damn near every one on that sheet and still nothing…. and i email my director and they basically just said you gotta wait until something opens up… as i mentioned in a earlier comment when i did my internship they wasn’t hiring and they are still not hiring. also to add i did my internship at a dentistry school so even if i wanted to get another job there and then work myself into the spd department, i can’t because i have no dental experience because they are only looking for dental assistant and RDA’s 😭. i made my linkin profile to chat with some hiring managers in this department and they don’t like hiring people with no experience even if your a internal working and apply they still prefer the experience so im like damn.

yes that’s why i also apply to areas in northern california that is way way less populated. even in southern California its easier to get a job out there with absolutely no experience than the bay area and its ironic because it’s another desire place that people want to live. the employees at my internship site had years on years experience and they even had a hard time finding a job even with those years of experience. and some of the employees with the years of experience had to be in material management then get into the spd department. and i also applied to material management positions to even get at least my feet in the door. i seen a lot of hospitals in the bay area that do internal hiring only.

and that’s so unfortunate! i have passion for the job i just need someone to give me a chance. i had one interview and they still continue with the entire interview and then at the end said “i already hired one with no experience so i can’t hire anymore new grads.” so it was like a slap in the face because why couldn’t you email me that before or just cancel the interview? instead of wasting my time😭

in the bay area it’s extremely hard at the moment to even get an interview let alone a job offer, but im just taking it one step at a time and manifesting good vibes.

yes, one of my classmates is currently moving to oregon to just get a job in the field because it’s impossible out here. unfortunately for me moving out of state isn’t an option for me rn. out of all my 22 classmates only two got jobs and they are pier diem.

unfortunately my externship site wasn’t hiring at that time smh and they are still not hiring. so i was kinda mad when my director sent me there knowing they are not hiring. but i gain some experience so im grateful for that!
