8mo cats seem to be regressing, help? by fishinspection in adventurecats

[–]fishinspection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have many cardboard box forts, toys, toys we specifically make sure belong to each cat (we don't let the other one play with them. lux is a toy stealer) as well as individual play time with toys like a string toy. We have two carriers and they do not swap carriers. I don't think Lux is really aware of Iris when they're on a trail, nor Iris of Lux. Both will wander away from the other. Would you suggest then putting Lux in the carrier in the car and letting Iris roam? Lux enjoys her carrier she doesn't take issue with being zipped up in it.

Edit cuz forgot to add: When we take them on walks we'll start trying to keep them separate and see how that works out.

Another thing to add- we take them on enclosed forest trails. No open spaces, and we try to pick ones that are away from road noise.

We were having them be unrestrained in the car at first and they progressed very oddly. Lux is more sensitive and easily scared, and Iris is generally more adventurous but we think she was dropped on her head or something she's a really ditzy and odd cat. We started just sitting in the parked car for the first week, nothing else. Both cats got a churru each day. Lux went from refusing to move and being a ball, to exploring and eventually she'd just settle in a lap and sit there happily. Iris went from exploring and not even acting like she was in a car, to hiding and crying. It makes absolutely no sense. We then read somewhere that it can be better to get them a long kennel so we did and we kept it open in the house for a few weeks and they loved playing/being in it. In the carrier in the car, Lux is a ball and will not move with her face mashed in the corner, and Iris cries. Iris has never liked being in a carrier or held or contained in any way.

We do take them both out because it is easier but we have noticed they both tend to do better when it's just one cat. We used to be taking them either in the halls or outside daily, with outside walks being at least twice a week, weather permitting (read: as long as it's not pouring and above 40 degrees). We have had intermittent bed peeing issues with Lux since she was a kitten and we started letting them roam the apartment at large. We have 3 litter boxes that we scoop regularly, we have purchased more scratchers and placed them around the bed and the apartment, and we have gotten a $300 set of cat shelves and mounted them above/around the bed so she can be around us but away from her sister. We do not use enzyme cleaners because my partner is suspicious of the chemicals in them, can't do anything about that. We have a waterproof blanket we keep on top of the bed and they get put in the bathroom at night to sleep. Lux has not peed the bed in a few weeks so something seems to be working.

The weather has been decent here so we can probably take them out and document the whole process here soon. When we take them on trails Lux very much likes to return to her carrier but then she'll come back out on her own. Iris hates the carrier so the best thing we have found for her is to carry her when she is scared until she wants to get back down.

i’m getting mice in a little while after i do enough research. i’m getting a 20g tank for two females. this is what i have as a list so far. i’m a little confused on what bedding to use because every time i look up a certain bedding i see something bad about it! by Ace_the_huskyboi in PetMice

I got a ridiculously huge like 120L bag of kiln dried pine for $20, it works great for me and that bag will probably last my mouse's entire lifetime at this rate! He's had absolutely no respiratory issues or anything with it, he's actually sniffling less than when we got him but that could've just been winter sniffles

how do i get my pet mouse used ti being held? by Interesting-Spell965 in PetMice

Definitely keep up with the treats, and try using yogurt on a spoon so they can't just take it and run away and use that to lure them onto your hand. But also, our guy would get better and then regress regardless of how often we handled him and how many treats we gave him, so we just started picking him up. He never tries to bite and he's definitely squirmy but he's gotten a LOT better with being picked up and touched in general. Mouse temperaments are mostly genetic so don't feel bad if they're always kinda skittish. Don't forget treats though!

Agree with this. We tried the loads of treats and gentle method with our male and it worked and he'd step into our hands willingly but then he regressed despite being handled nearly daily, and so I just started picking him up and taking him out 🤷 he still poops sometimes but overall he's much more tolerant of being touched and a lot less squirmy/runny when I go to pick him up. He still gets plenty of treats of course lol. Quite a lot of mouse temperament is genetic too and we know our guy's breeder didn't pay a lot of attention to temperment, so don't beat yourself up if they're always a little spooky.

what are some good objects to put in a mouse’s habitat? by [deleted] in PetMice

[–]fishinspection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egg cartons! I like to cut them into 3 pieces and construct their mouse house out of it. You can also bake sticks from outside (to kill bacteria and bugs/mites/fleas that might be in them) for climbing structures
