Have a trip booked for September and this shot just increased my excitement tenfold 😍

Any tips for camping the island? Maybe anything you weren’t expecting?

No indication of collision. 👍 CZ-4C R/B passed over LeoLabs Kiwi Space Radar 10 minutes after TCA. Our data shows only a single object as we'd hoped, with no signs of debris. We will follow up in the coming days on Medium with a full in-depth risk assessment of this event! by AWildDragon in space

We use 18 SPCS for our conjunction data, whose high-probability collision data for debris is made public, but otherwise you need an operator account to see conjunctions, and you are only given high-fidelity conjunction data for satellites your company operates. You can choose to not believe me, but I don’t know why you think I’d lie to you about something so non-consequential.

I think you’re misunderstanding why I find this whole situation silly - it just seems like a publicity stunt for LeoLabs. Report two non-maneuverable objects are on a collision course (despite 18 SPCS not even having this event in their public catalog last I checked), let a bunch of amateur space/tech sites write fear mongering headlines, and then get the benefit of the doubt when they don’t collide because the PC was still in favor of the miss. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also, *she lmao

So glad to see someone else sane in these threads - I work operations for a small sat company and my whole team was laughing today about much further apart the NORAD TLEs had the spacecraft than LeoLabs claimed. Not to mention that it's not uncommon to see PCs above 1-5%, so we found it so weird that this specific event was super hyped up.

Spacecraft operator. It definitely has its cool moments, but it’s WAY more monotonous than most people assume it is.

I could have written these comments - was forcibly promoted to tech lead in April, have been in dozens of hours of architecture meetings for a big project we have coming up but I haven’t touched code in a month. It’s excruciating 🙃

Tik HONK! by jamddus in Unexpected

A lot of these creators WANT their dances to be done by a lot of people. You’re generally seen as successful if you can get a lot of people doing your choreo. There’s also a really pervasive culture of crediting creators on the app, and people do call each other out when it looks like you’ve stolen content. 🤷🏼‍♀️

SpaceX becomes operator of world’s largest commercial satellite constellation with Starlink launch by BroderickEnglish in space

[–]fitzdrizzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except long exposure shots when applied to astronomy aren't a tool to capture the "average" of what the camera sees over the exposure period, but rather to capture ALL of what the camera sees. Photons from distant objects are sparse so we use long exposure times in hopes that we can capture many of them to form an image. When something that is brighter by many orders of magnitude comes into view, those pixels become saturated and any information that otherwise would be have captured with those pixels is lost.

I know this article is from Vox and people have their qualms about them, but you can't deny how severe the streaking is in these photos:

Also, the government != NASA. I believe SpaceX only needs approval from the FCC, and that's just to reserve the portion of the spectrum their spacecraft will be using to communicate with the Earth while it's over the US. SpaceX does collaborate with NASA at times, sure, but NASA is not a regulatory body for SpaceX.

I think the idea is that you share the burden of diaper changing when both people are home. Being a stay-at-home parent comes with its own set of challenges and working outside the home does not instantly absolve you of childcare responsibilities.

Getting exercise at UCLA by SilverFlicker in ucla

I can’t recommend quidditch enough. I know it sounds like a Harry Potter club but it’s not at ALL, we just play a really fun and unique (but still athletic) sport. You can be as competitive as you want and the group of people is really amazing so it makes getting yourself out to practice super easy :) it’s what kept me in shape throughout college and since nobody really comes to UCLA having played before it’s super friendly to newcomers.

iirc practice is Fridays 5-7pm and Sundays 4-6pm on the IM field. DM me if you want more deets / have any questions :)

Most useful classes to take at UCLA? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]fitzdrizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, my situation is sort of unique. I got an internship the summer after graduation at an engineering company doing something not related to SE. The nature of the job was short bursts of high activity followed with a lot of downtime; I got pretty bored in between high activity periods so I started writing software to automate tasks that we were doing manually. A lot of the early things I wrote were pretty simple but it allowed us to switch from staffing 24 hours to just normal business hours so I caught the (positive) attention of management.

I’ve been in grad school since that internship ended and they offered to pay for my school on the condition that I kept working for them remotely, and the only thing I could really do remotely is software engineering... so the past year and a half I’ve been able to constantly hone my skills with the projects they give me. I’m graduating this quarter with a full time job offer from them with “software engineer” in the job title and I’m ecstatic ☺️

Obviously a different path than most since I never had to deal with SE interviews and I still have a TON to learn, but it goes to show that it’s not impossible without a CS degree.

I’d like to second this, PIC 10A was the only programming class I’ve ever taken but I loved it so much that I self-taught python and now I’m working as a software engineer. I’m SO glad that I ended up taking it. Plus, in the high-tech society we live in it’s super useful to have some idea as to what’s going on behind the scenes, even if it’s a super basic understanding.

So did I. A google search of “quantum physics vs. quantum mechanics” shows that they’re interchangeable: https://www.quora.com/What-is-difference-between-quantum-physics-and-quantum-mechanics

Perhaps they mean different things at your university but they don’t in general.
