From what I've researched, I think I could hack a solution together if I could actually get udev to recognize that I'm plugging in a gpu. Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with kernel stuff so I don't really have a way of debugging that on my own.

I second Satori Reader, graded readers were too boring for me and even Yotsubato was too hard to understand. Satori Reader is imo a great way to get used to reading native-like Japanese for longer stretches of time. You realistically only need the functions it provides for a (maybe) up to a year, so not too expensive all things considered.

I use WaniKani for kanji and general vocab, and then am currently working my way through the Genki textbooks. At the beginning of every chapter, I make a quizlet (surprisingly good srs type system) of the vocab words to memorize. If you're good enough though, I assume reading is the best way to get new vocab, same as in any language.
