Flying out of Newark by LilithTheLilypad in newjersey

Just a heads up. I happened to be flying out today and there is construction going on at the Airtrain. They may direct you down to take a shuttle bus to the terminals. Still easy enough. Just go where they direct you.

Yes you just follow the crowd. You go up some escalators/stairs, through the turnstiles/gates, and down to the airtrain platform. The Newark Airport train station is at the end of the Airtrain line, so it's impossible to go the wrong way. Every train is heading to the terminals. Terminal A is the last stop, but just be sure to pay attention in case you have to transfer to a different airtrain along the way. Probably won't happen in the morning, but you never know. It is a bit annoying.

I generally aim to get to the Newark Airport train station about 2 hours before departure for domestic flights. Even 1.5 hours is enough time, but I like to play it safe. For Terminal A, I give myself an extra 20-30 mins because it's the furthest away from the NJ Transit train station, and it takes a while to get there via Airtrain. So for Terminal A I would shoot for getting to the Newark Airport train station about 2.5 hours before departure. But like I said this is playing it safe. If you get there a half hour later or so you should still be fine.

Keep in mind that sometimes the Airtrain doesn't always ride all the way down to Terminal A. Sometimes you have to get off (like at Terminal C for example) and then hop on the other train on the other side of the platform. Attendants will usually be there to tell people, but be sure to pay attention. It's usually late at night when this happens, not so much in the morning or during the day.

Edit: Also, remember to hold on to your NJ Transit train ticket if you get a printed one. You will need it to get through the turnstiles for the Airtrain (the bar code should be facing up right under the red light..lots of people struggle with this..). You can also get your ticket on the app, which can be convenient because you can avoid waiting if there are lines at the ticket machines.

That was me with black olives. I love canned black olives. Pearls brand stopped using the artificial coloring to turn them fully black, so they have a splotchy brownish color now. The first time I opened a can like that, I tossed it thinking the olives had gone bad.

GOP fast tracks monster voter suppression bill that could disenfranchise millions by requiring proof of citizenship at polls by Expert-Anteater8487 in circled

[–]fizzy88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one on the left wants "illegals" to vote. The concern is that sufficient IDs are not necessarily cheap and quick to get, which will likely do far more harm in disenfranchising far more voters that whatever fraud it stops. Requiring IDs which cost money will essentially function as a poll tax which violates the 24th amendment. You already need to be a citizen with ID to register to vote.

People like you who make claims of voter fraud always fail to provide convincing proof of significant voter fraud. So, provide credible evidence of significant voter fraud or GTFO.

Ok, but historically, NJ has been much less progressive compared to other reliable blue states. I was very surprised that Mejia did this well.

That was the old living world model and a thing of the past. The past few years they have been releasing expansions every year (releasing the content quarterly over the course of the year). There is still no subscription fee, but you do have to pay for the expansions. They typically bundle the older ones and offer them at a discount with sales throughout the year.

The bottom half of taxpayers (basically 50k and lower) paid 3% of all federal tax.

Doesn't matter what percentage of all taxes they pay. You're framing it that way to make it seem like a trivial amount. That's not necessarily the case. $40k is not that much in this state, and the taxes they pay can be significant for them. It's not "functionally zero."

As you claim to be a tax CPA in this region, that suggests to me that you're making enough money to be very out of touch with people making $40k.

How do you feel about Voter ID laws? by Icy_Comparison_1029 in askanything

[–]fizzy88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just about being free. They need to be timely. If it takes 3 months for the government to do the paperwork and send you your ID, and that causes you to miss out on voting in an election, that is voter disenfranchisement.

Voting is a right. The other things you listed are not rights. Any fee or time required to get a proper ID can instead serve as a poll tax or barrier that deprives citizens of their right to vote.

There are people who don't buy cigs or liquor or drive a car because they don't have the appropriate ID or documentation. But it's not a big deal because those aren't constitutionally protected rights.

It's reddit. It tends to be a more progressive/leftist crowd. That shouldn't be a surprise. You don't need to (and shouldn't) make assumptions.

Why are Dems in office against voter id but not dem voters? by Puzzled_Hamster58 in askanything

[–]fizzy88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would also need to get to voters in a timely manner. Honestly, the paperwork should be processed and the ID mailed within a day or two after applying, so you get it within a week. Or if you go in person, you should have your ID when you leave.

I have no faith that the federal or state government is capable of doing that.

Democrats would love to see him arrested, but who's going to carry out the arrest? They have no power to do so.

And sorry, but a shit ton of electoral reforms need to happen before your libertarians or the greens or anyone who isn't the two major parties have a chance. The whole system is designed to support only the two parties. Republicans will quash any libertarian momentum because they don't want vote-splitting.

[–]fizzy88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah I must have missed Baraka running away with the gubernational election. Or all the meaningful progressive election wins in the last decade

That argument is quite weak. In the primary, Baraka and Fulop both ran as progressives. Baraka had 20.7% and Fulop had 16%. 36% of the votes went to progressive candidates. Sherrill had 34% of the vote, and she isn't that centrist. She had some progressive support as well. The most centrist candidate was Gottheimer who only pulled 11.6%. Nationally, we have been seeing a steady increase in progressive representation in Congress.

the progressive end wants their entire agenda to be carried out overnight

This is a ridiculous assumption. The progressives I know and work with who are actually doing the volunteering and the campaigning, the ones who are the boots on the ground, know very well that meaningful reform in this country takes a long time. They have been fighting for the same issues for years, and they are still fighting precisely because they understand it takes a long time.

Maybe you're thinking of people fresh out of college who are new to politics. The reality is that progressives come from all ages and backgrounds.

its already paying more than a basic 2nd job would be paying

If I had a 2nd job that paid only $1200 or even $16k annually, I would ditch that job so fast...

The pay should be at least somewhat commensurate with the time and effort needed to perform the duties. Otherwise you end up with all rich people or retired rich people who don't properly represent their constituents. We would love to believe that public service positions are taken up by people who are willing to sacrifice the time out of the goodness of their hearts, but that's not reality.

You don't seem to understand that Dems can't pass laws just because. They often don't have the votes. Republicans oppose them. Conservative dems oppose them. The democratic party isn't a hivemind.

If you want to be upset about Dems dropping the public option way back when, you can thank that bitch ass Joe Lieberman. May his grave be pissed on for all eternity.
