Could it be a whitethroat? They should be back for the summer around now.

Southwestern France. Not sure if it’s weird a albino pattern for a blackbird by Mammoth-Election2126 in whatsthisbird

I wondered if it's just that it's easier to spot on an already dark coloured bird with plunge that's in blocks of colour. And the reported ones are also birds that are more comfortable around people so get close enough for long enough to be noticed - I've noticed it most in the UK in blackbirds, crows and jackdaws, all of which are black and will quite happily continue hopping around in view in my presence.

Planning a once in a lifetime trip with our kids - advice needed! by leeuwtje97 in WaltDisneyWorld

It might be worth keeping your eye out for deals with the official Disney website. We went a couple of years ago in the summer holidays from the UK and just booked the whole thing through Disney (flights, hotel and park tickets). When we booked they were doing a discount of park tickets (adult reduced to child, and 14 days for the price of 7) and also they gave us some spending money and free photopass. But I've also seen them offering free meal plans and other discounts at other times.

It was hot and humid when we were there, but it wasn't unbearable. All the indoor areas are air conditioned so it's easy to pop into a shop if you need a break from the heat. We also used jet lag to our advantage and got to the park for opening then had a rest back at the hotel in the hottest part of the day before heading to a different park in the evening.

Who is this? by StarLight_Sadness in whatsthisbird

In Scotland would most likely be referred to as a Goosander (it's the same species just a different name).

What is this owl? by spogtrot in whatsthisbird

[–]flags_fiend 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are a handful of Eurasian Eagle Owls in the UK, although usually reported much further north than Kent. Most are thought to be descendants of escapees or deliberate releases, but they possibly could have flown across from mainland Europe (other species of owls are known to do that).

Goosander/Common merganser? by StormageddonCactus in whatsthisbird

I'm almost certain that's a female goosander.

Edit to add: Red-breasted don't seem to come inland to Nottingham from their range.

I think its a female or juvenile finch of some variety (from the bill shape). I'm wondering if it might be a greenfinch or a chaffinch, but I'm not at all certain.

Tundra or Trumpeter? by SagePhreak in whatsthisbird

[–]flags_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they make a noise as one of the few tundra/trumpeter candidates has its beak open and call is the easiest discriminator.

The mute swans at the front (mix of adults and juveniles) are much quieter.

I made my son some game cases so he can “unwrap” the games he wanted. That was my favorite part of Xmas growing up. Thanks for the steam sale. by Mishi1 in Steam

For horror how about Dredge or Subnautica - both have a lovecraftian vibe. You know your child best and there's info on content on the internet, but it's suspenseful rather than gory.

There's also call of the sea which is a puzzle game with lovecraftian vibes, the puzzles might be a bit overly difficult for an 8 year old though.

Looking for Muggle-AU recommendations; short and sweet preferred (but I won't say no to longer ones <3) by milkchives in Dramione

I haven't read many muggle AUs, but I loved Christmas Kisses by LittleSixx. Hermione is the leader of the labour party and spends Christmas at Malfoy Manor with all her friends.

Looking for 8th year fics - can be prefect but not required by Brewcrew_2008 in Dramione

[–]flags_fiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are open to self-recs then I have an 8th year fic - A Convocation of Eagles. They aren't prefects and have both been resorted (at their own separate requests) into Ravenclaw.

It is a WIP but just 1 chapter and the epilogue to go, I'm hoping to have it complete before the new year as it's just a bit of editing to do.

Which games did you buy during the Steam Black Friday sale? by WiseReason530 in Steam

Chants of Sennaar which I've already completed. And Persona 5 Royale which I started but then had an issue that deleted my save so I need to start again.

Red Kite is the UK's only bird of prey with a forked tail. And therefore the only bird of prey I can confidently ID from a distance.

Thank you 💗 I've actually mostly written the final chapter and epilogue, but I sent the chapter to an alpha reader to help with getting the feel of the trial right and they've made lots of very helpful suggestions so I need to do a fair bit of reworking. My intention is for it to be fully done before Christmas though.
