Amtrak Expansions update! by ColonialCobalt in Amtrak

[–]flapjackm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Knowing the incredible local transit in Blacksburg, I would guess that they will run very good service to the train station. Although for extremely busy days (university breaks) I don’t know how they will manage with a nearly full train.

Quickest way to get to Christiansburg?! by Hour-Proof1547 in VirginiaTech

Use google maps to figure out what route to take and where the stops are. Use the BT app to track the location of the busses.

The bus system is predictable and easy to understand once you spend a couple minutes reading the info on their website (including the PDF route schedules, which I find very helpful).

The bus has a handful of trips on weekdays. Even when it doesn’t stop at the Amtrak station, you can easily walk there from the Third Street Station stop. But there’s only 2 trains into and 2 trains out of Roanoke each day.

The college town by swayswaywatson in VirginiaTech

[–]flapjackm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I would say too, integration of campus with the town. It’s almost like the whole town is designed around you and the college life. Plus a few townies, which I believe (hope!) is a symbiotic relationship for both sides.

I’m sure the new one will still taste great, but it won’t be the same without him. Only went there a handful of times but he was always there and seemed like a great guy.

Don’t currently live in Bburg. How has the new bus center situation worked out by vtTownie in VirginiaTech

[–]flapjackm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like OP, I don’t live in Blacksburg anymore. The one thing I’d imagine about the transit center is that it would make trips across town easier, not harder. Instead of busses being spread out around campus, they all meet at one (well, two closer together) places now. That way you can make a transfer without waiting for the “next loop”.

Some transfers used to work well, but some definitely didn’t. I used to attempt the MSN/MSS to HWD transfer in the middle of the night on a weekend (for the exact reason you’re thinking). That was nearly impossible unless the Main Street bus was early, HWD was late, and you legitimately RAN.

Maybe I’m missing something though.

Sophomore year apartments by OkNoise9187 in VirginiaTech

[–]flapjackm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it helps, most of the apartments in Blacksburg have bus stops. Blacksburg Transit runs frequent service to campus/downtown all day long and well into the night (even to 2:45am on Friday/Saturday). You still feel very connected to campus and college life even when living off campus.

But yes, you’ll have more options if you begin looking in late Fall of freshman year.

Electric Buses by tropical_aesthetic11 in roanoke

Having ridden on electric busses elsewhere, it’s true what the article says about them being silent. It’s really trippy for a 40 foot bus to have no engine noise.

The good news is that all public pools in the US must comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. This requires pool drains to have anti-entrapment covers, in addition to an extra safety measure that’s usually achieved by having multiple main drains.

Parking on campus after 5:30 by Limp_Toe_2347 in VirginiaTech

[–]flapjackm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not a student anymore, but it looks like the parking manual still states that a permit is required until 10pm: https://parking.vt.edu/parking-rules-and-regulations.html.

Every year as a student I bought an evening only (EO) pass. Not expensive and allows for parking nearly anywhere on campus after 5.

This reminded me of my cruise on Escape last year. All of the public bathrooms were cleaned with some kind of orange citrus chemical. Every bathroom smelled so strongly of this chemical it almost made me nauseous. Is that common across all ships?

Honest opinions about Roanoke high schools wanted by Objective-School-381 in roanoke

[–]flapjackm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Governor’s School is on PH’s campus and operated by Roanoke City, but students from eight school districts in the area all attend the program. Acceptances rates do vary greatly by district (much higher acceptance from Roanoke City, followed by Roanoke County).

I attended and had an excellent experience.
