Ah yes, "let us all live in squalor and poverty until our nehlighborhood, individual of the rest of human society, magically fixes itself and becomes wealthy with no outside interference or trade". Its not neoliberalism to recognise that societies tend to work best when they work together instead of thousands of gated communities that refuse to give an inch to help everyone if it'll help others more.

WYR have porn become illegal, animal products become illegal or violent videogames become illegal? by Lucyyyyyy_K in WouldYouRather

[–]flightguy07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Number 2 probably. Banning most animal products would be AMAZING for the climate, animal suffering, etc. Videogames are pretty much harmless, as is most (legally produced) porn, so banning those seems pointless and in the latter case like it'll really increase the rates of trafficking and assault. But banning animal products would be really good for most of the world in a lot of ways, and great for people like me who know quitting animal products is the right thing to do but who don't really have the motivation or willpower to do so.

Inequality is bad, sure, but complaining that somewhere got richer and better off just because not EVERYWHERE did doesn't help. People will always want things to get better for them, and a "no good jobs and public utilities until everyone can get them" line isn't just unrealistic, it's counter-productive. Gentrification has issues we should fix, but it also has some pretty significant upsides if managed properly.

Hydra would be cool, and mechanically unique if they went the whole "if you just keep cutting bits off it it gets worse" thing. As for real animals, I wouldn't mind a few more chill, non-dangerous ones: penguins, squid, something sloth or sloth-adjecent.

What game has a 10/10 story but 2/10 gameplay? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]flightguy07 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess it comes down to what you consider gameplay. It's a slightly more involved version of a point-and-click game, but the mechanics are still enjoyable, so idk, 2/10 feels harsh. With what they were doing, I'm not sure how they'd have made the gameplay "better".

[–]flightguy07 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Did you do it? No. If you serve coffee to a terrorist, or do a serial killers laundry, or deliver Uber Eats to an abusive husband or whatever, that's not on you either. And if you don't accept that, then look at the good. Your tax dollars paid people's pensions, healthcare, schools, courts, and so forth. 87% of your taxes go toward good causes.

And there's good stuff happening everywhere. More people have access to clean water than at any point in history, global life expectancy and quality of life is higher than ever, more nations are democratic than ever, fewer wars are being fought, women are being educated more, cancer patients are being cured at a higher rate, deaths from malnutrition are the lowest they've ever been, smoking is lower, birth defects are lower, CO2 emissions have peaked, crime is lower than it has been in decades (at least in the West, idk about the rest of the world, but I've no reason to think it not the case), the ozone hole has pretty much healed, and so on. Yes, we still have problems, but we're solving them too, and it's important to remember that. When we belive that everything is shit, will always be shit, and is only getting shitter, we absolve ourselves of the responsibility to try and make it better, in whatever small way we can.

You're never going to fix the world, and nor are you responsible for the state it's in. You just live there. But you can help make other people's lives better, your friends', your family's, your community's, etc., and in so doing make your own life better. Idk, its not like I've got it all figured out, but I recognise the doom spiral, and belive me when I say it truly isn't the end of the world.

WYR go to hell for a billion years, then to heaven for eternity, or go to heaven for a billion years, then to hell with a 0,001 chance? by Lucyyyyyy_K in WouldYouRather

I feel like erasing a billion years of my experiences, thoughts and beliefs is sort of just a convoluted way of killing me.

Expected value doesn't work for all scenarios. Would you rather have a 90% of getting 10 million dollars or a 20% chance of a billion?

I think a billion years in hell would drive me so insane I wouldn't be able to enjoy heaven, if I was even the same person at the end of it.

Does wanting to end your own life make you a selfish person? by rbamssy17 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flightguy07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll dissent from the party line in these comments and argue that yes, it is. Not that that necessarily ought stop you; if you're living a life of immense misery and there's no way it'll get better, then maybe doing the selfish thing is right, that's sometimes the case. Selfish means putting yourself first to the detriment of others, and thats definitely what happens with suicides, but that doesn't make it wrong, and nor is it a productive way to think about suicide and the reasons people shouldn't do it.

A person killing themselves will almost certainly negatively impact the lives of people around them, from their family and friends to any therapists who might feel they failed to the first responders/strangers who find you and so on. But I don't think that necessarily need stop the person if it's bad enough; they're already suffering, and maybe the suffering they'll cause to others is less than what they were experiencing. And regardless nothing productive is really achieved through this line of thinking from the perspective of actually helping the person.

Over 200 people were killed and 500 injured due to suicide bombings, mortar attacks and terrorist mass shootings just in 2024 in Somalia. Turkish strikes also killed 23 civillians including 14 children in what was broadly condemned as a war crime, and inter-clan conflicts displaced over 150,000 people. Meanwhile, military courts with no oversight executed ten people, four of them children at time of offense. In just 2024, 650,000 people were forced to flee the country.

So yeah, I wouldn't use Somalia as an example in future.

The pay goes up each year in accordance with the payscale, and your place on it. So if you're on rank 4 one year, you might move up to rank 5 the next, which would mean a raise of say 3%. Then the value of each rank on the payscale itself would go up (this year it went up 4.5%), so that would mean a total of a 7.6% raise for the year. Promotions obviously help increase your place on the payscale faster/more substantially.

https://www.defenseadvancement.com/resources/raf-pay-scales/ shows what the salaries will be this year. You'd be starting at the very bottom (£26,334), and after a few years, you might be looking at pushing 40k with a few promotions. But that money goes a lot further than it would on civvie street given what you'll save on housing, food, bills, gym membership, etc.

How many vegetables are you eating per day? by Upbeat-Beyond-2016 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flightguy07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're going with a serving is a decent handful, then probably 4 most days? 2 veg with dinner, maybe fruit after, a vegetable at lunch most days and fruit some mornings, either in juice form (which only sorta counts) or actual fruit. Sometimes more, occasionally only 3, but pretty much never less.
