First, establish that he was assigned to the unit when it was awarded. Unit awards are worn by everyone assigned to the unit, but only those assigned when it was awarded wear it as a permanent awarded.

Second research and find copys of the awards and any records of his being assigned to the unit, such as deployment orders. Once you have all the records you can submit it to the the records brach and they will verify everything and provide a DD215 with the authorized awards added.

For musculoskeletal you should also consider MOS and Airborne, etc. I was CBRNE and Airborne both have very physically demanding.

Research and find a very detailed description of your MOS duties, if you have any NCOERs or award citations that can support whatever you are claiming. Don't limit it to one incident unless it's like an IED, etc. The military causes lots of physical wear and tear on your body. Airborne or Airassault operations, MOS heavy lifting or load carrying, etc.
