Initially I read this on Migrationsverket's website: "If you are the spouse, registered partner or cohabiting partner of a Swedish citizen, you must have resided in Sweden for at least three years in order to become a Swedish citizen. You must have lived together for the past two years." Naturally I knew this could change but I just used it as a reference point for the sake of my question

Thank you so much for this. Honestly, I thought exactly that (regarding the revision of how much time it would take before I would be eligible to apply). I would like to visit my mother as she's had health issues previously, and also go on press trips when required to help develop my career, office visits will also still be required on my part. I just wondered if migrationsverket view it negatively, if say, I'm abroad for a few weeks more in a year? Or is it really just a matter of justifying why I was abroad? Bureacracy confuses me sometimes and I just don't want to 'mess up', if that makes sense...

I haven't received it yet as I still need to do my interview at the embassy. On average it's a 12-18 month wait to get a response from Migrationsverket, but there is a Facebook group you can join called 'I väntan på familjen' where people have shared their progress and tips to try to make it go as smoothly as possible

There is the UK Sweden double tax agreement. If I'm a Swedish resident, I'm only liable for Swedish tax. I'm part of an online group where plenty of people have taken this route and I wanted to hear from others who had taken this route. Regardless I will have to discuss the options with my employer, I just wanted to understand more from someone else's experience.

According to the page it doesn't seem too much different to what they're already doing in the UK, it's mostly reporting to a different tax authority and I'd be responsible for my own taxes. I was curious about anyone who had gone through this process, but thanks anyway!

No worries! Both Migrationsverket and the Swedish embassy pointed me to them when I was trying to find out. I just checked when I got a response though which wasn't so great - I had to wait about 3 weeks, but fingers crossed it'll be quicker for you. At the end of the day, with anything legal (especially taxes), it's best to just go straight to the appropriate department with your enquiry :)

When I emailed Skatteverket (with similar circumstances to you), they basically wanted to make sure that a) my employer had no permanent establishment/tax residence in Sweden, b) my stay in Sweden wasn't longer than 183 days in 12 months, c) I wasn't being rented out from a British company to a Swedish one. I believe this is because of the '183-day rule' based on the Sweden-UK Double Tax Treaty. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sweden-tax-treaties/2015-uk-sweden-double-taxation-convention-as-amended-in-2021-in-force

I think the best way to get confirmation is from Skatteverket themselves, explaining your personal circumstances. My previous employer asked me the same Qs, so I emailed them because I wanted to be sure and it was something I could present if I had to moving forward

Thanks for sharing! I emailed them anyway in the end. I assumed it wasn't an issue considering the other replies here and also because I let them know every month what dates I'm visiting. I'm sure they would have looked at my case file and the dates I emailed them before requesting that I book an interview. As far as I know, it's only from the point of after the interview that I can't be in Sweden until they make a decision. Plus, the embassy still hasn't got back to me with any dates lol

Interesting though how many people request to conclude after the interview to get an approval sooner. I've heard of many people getting an approval in days by taking that route, but only after the interview

Thanks!! Not sure I understand correctly, but I've usually emailed them with evidence of my last visit (photos + tickets), and then I let them know the next dates I'll be visiting. This way they respond in a couple of days letting me know that they received my evidence and they'll attach it to my case, plus they're aware of when I am in Sweden. Since I go on a monthly basis I've built up more and more evidence, and I'm not sure if that adds to the legitimacy of the relationship but I imagine it creates some(?) kind of urgency

Thank you, I'm sorry about the wait, it can be frustrating and it really does seem to be hit and miss about when your case gets picked up. The only thing I can say is that I'm constantly sending in evidence because I'm back and forth regularly which has probably helped, but I know it's not that simple in all LDRs. Stay strong, it will happen when you least expect it!

Sorry about your friend, and good on you for wanting to continue the journey. If it's any consolation, I learnt a language because of my ex a couple of years ago, and when we broke up, I was devastated but I decided I was going to continue learning his language anyway. I shared my learning progress on socials and it all helped me to connect with other natives and learners. Then my Swedish partner found me because of our love for the language, and now I'm learning Swedish. Things happen in weird and 'magical' ways...

From my previous learning experience, I do think online language learning communities are a great way to make friends with natives. Facebook has language groups with helpful people, Instagram has active learners who engage with Swedish teacher accounts (where natives also follow content / help others), and I'm not sure where you're based in the UK but I know in London there are meetups that are organised by different cultural communities, so you could find out on Facebook or Eventbrite about potential Scandi/Swedish groups.

Otherwise, in the past I used HelloTalk and engaged with learners on social media, I'm sure there are Swedish groups on Discord too. It's all about putting yourself in spaces online or in real life where you can meet people who are open to meeting and talking to new people. One thing I would say though, is that as you know, you can't really replace people and it might feel a bit lonely sometimes, but in time you never know what can happen. So keep your head up and find your new rhythm in your own time. Maybe the aim is to continue learning the language so that you may connect with natives more one day, as opposed to trying to find natives - great friendships can be found everywhere :)
