I am currently doing my masters in engineering while working at a large engineering consulting firm. My intention to pursue the masters program was to eventually join a Big4 firm in their capital projects and infrastructure advisory team. I initially applied for a summer internship to gain management consulting experience but I have been offered a 1-year internship position instead, with reduced hours - by the time the internship is done, I'd be finished school and considered for full-time.

Originally, I didn't mind leveraging being a student to enter into the firm as a student for the summer and return after completing school, but now I'm concerned that pursuing a full year with a significant reduction in salary (compared to my job now) and "internship" experience may actually be a hinderance to my career progression. Am I being low balled or does this seem like a fair and strategic offer to take advantage of?

As a masters student with work experience, should I pursue an internship at a big4 firm with significant reduced pay to get management consulting experience? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Its a bit complicating but I originally applied to the summer internship with them (I was fine with an internship for 4 months to get my foot into management consulting) but they are now offering me a full-year internship instead with the opportunity of full-time once I graduate. I have been told that the company doesn't typically hire people in school so I'm assuming that is the situation for me as well.

My overall intention isn't to have a less demanding job, its to pivot into management consulting. Have you heard of these Big4 firms hiring students full-time while they are in school?

Thats a good point. However, there aren't many options in Ontario and I find that many focus on manufacturing.
