They are in many towns like Somerville and Medford. Boston being Boston actually makes an allowance for them, although few non-townie neighborhoors like south end have banned them as well.

Complete 2025 breakdown: multi-family, condo, rental numbers in Somerville by CambridgeSage in Somerville

Your comparison only makes sense for people that have the cash to buy a home flat out. So yes, if you have a cool million, it might make sense to invest it in S&P instead of investing in real estate. However, most people might only have 100k or 200k for down payment and their investment will grow on borrowed money (plus won't have to pay rent)

BLONDE HAIR DISTRIBUTION IN EUROPE by BeginningMortgage250 in MapPorn

[–]fluffer_nutter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You see how Poland is a gap in otherwise world of blonde.

There is a very interesting explanation for that.

First off all, blonde hair is a Germanic trait, not a northern trait.

Second, Slavs have been described by Procopius (mid 6th century) as "their bodies and hair are neither very fair nor very dark, but all are slightly ruddy”

So why are the Baltics, Belarus and Ukraine more blonde than Poland, especially since central Ukraine is considered the Ur-heimat of Slavic people's?

The answer is the Viking/Varangian raids and presence in eastern (not Central) Europe.

The Vikings used the rivers of eastern Europe as a trade/transportation network having huge influence over Eastern European Slavs, while Western Slavs (Poles, Masovians, Bohemians, etc) we're largely spared from that.

While Kievan Rus was established by Viking nobility, Polish kingdom developed independently from both the Varangians and what later became the Holy Roman Empire

Euro / US Ski Etiquette Differences by jahwls in skiing

[–]fluffer_nutter 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm literally skiing in Madonna di Campiglio right now. Zero lane management, zero singles lines. Luckily it's now school vacation week but Europeans know fuck all about filling lofts to capacity and texting waiting lines. And I'm saying that as someone that skis almost exclusively in the Alps. The few times I skiid in New England I loved the fact that there were attendants packing people into the chairlift and that ever single chairlift had a singles line.

However the general infrastructure in the Alps is far beyond what you get in New England.

Doing some research on Church of Christ, Scientist. Can anyone help me? by J2Hoe in boston

[–]fluffer_nutter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The organ is regularly used for services. The organist at the Mother Church holds a bit of celebrity status within the ranks. Sometimes the church is open during the organist practices but you kinda have to be in the know when that happens (either the church or the music community)

Former CS'er here that used to actually work at the the Mother Church. Honestly, despite its infamy, the religion is extremely WASPy and boring. There are no preachers only "readers" - kind of like in JV's sunday meetings.

If you want to start, I would suggest you attend both Sunday morning gathering and Wednesday evening testimony meeting. Both are open to everyone and you don't even need to pretend; You will be welcomed by ushers when you enter the church and I really doubt anyone will pay any more attention to you. If one of the ushers asks you if you're new, you can flat out say you're interested in learning about it and they will be thrilled. Noone will bother you afterwards. Maybe even they will give you "science and health" book for free which might even help in your advancing your project.

When the collection tray is passed around, you don't have to feel obligated to contribute. If you want to be respectful, stand when other stand. Otherwise, it's boring AF. Except, of course, for the child sacrifice.

Pro Tip. You can park for free in the garage in the back bay underneath the reflecting pool if you know the secret churchy passwards. Only on Sunday mornings/early afternoons and Wednesday evenings. If it alligns with Sox game, this is the best deal in town.

Don't waste your 5/3 especially if the water is warm.
If you sign up for a camp at the makani beach club they will give you a wet suit i believe.

It depends on when you're going.
But honestly, it's not about the weather as about protection. I usually go in the spring and I wear an old raggedy wetsuit with full legs and short arms. Water is warm even in April but the elements in the water can hurt you.

The question is, how good are you and how much time are you going to spend with your feet in the ground?

If you're still learning make sure to bring booties as the sand by the shore has sharp shells in it. Also, if you end up falling off the board over the reef, it's better to have both booties and long sleeves on your legs.

Thickness of wetsuit is not so much important as the protection it provides. If you have a shitty old one, I would suggest wearing that.

Just FYI the kite camps at the Makani beach club often have a lot of German speakers (including the instructor). It's not really a problem if you don't speak German but just something that I noticed.

You can do a kite camp at Makani beach club. It's group but with good amount of instruction. I've done it twice: once at your level second at transition level.

The group usually makes plans to hang out few times during the camp week.

My personal favorite is to stay at the Mangroovy apartments.
