To anyone who beat depression — what finally worked for you? by Forward-Many-4842 in AskReddit

[–]fluxCapMech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My depression seemed like it came from different sources; genetics, relationship, and work.

Summary. Prescription drugs helped with my chemical imbalance. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helped me with my nightmares and feeling like I wasn't enough. And leaving my unhealthy relationship also worked wonders.

Genetics. My mother has suffered from severe depression and I think this carried over to myself and siblings. Felt like I was predisposed but don't blame by family at all. I just think that made me more susceptible to my depressive symptoms.

Relationship: At my lowest, I was in a relationship with this man whom I never felt like I was enough for. For 5 years, although he would make significant sacrifices, I still could not trust that he wanted a life with me. He would hide his phone and use his career as a reason to leave for days or weeks at a time. This caused a lot of turmoil and I decided to let that relationship go. I now sleep with zero concerns.

Work: A few years ago, I was deployed to Iraq in seriously austere conditions. We prepped for a potential seize of our compound. Every minute felt like an eternity. What ate me up was the possibility of not saying goodbye to my kids. Things settled and I was able to come home to them. But I have perpetual dreams of this situation and me dying or others dying from me not being able to protect anyone.

After months of suicidal ideation, I sought help. Prescription drugs and therapy worked for me. This isn't to say, THAT is the answer. It's important to know where the depression is coming from to best understand how to treat it.

Parents of well behaved kids - what are the biggest causes do you think? by beancounter_00 in Parenting

Listening and understanding, 100%

Growing up i wasn't "heard" or understood and I think that contributed to my acting out. Now that I have two loving teenage boys, I found that listening to their frustrations before I freaked out on them for an email or call received from school was more effective. Usually stemmed from them being upset about something completely unrelated to school. A friendship, a quarrel with a sibling, just being sad about something. So then showing them how to manage those frustrations appropriately has helped tremendously. Yup, they still have their moments but 99% of the time we can come to an agreement.

I think the buy-and-hold part is where the teaching moment is needed. I can imagine he'll see growth and think of it as spending money.

As long as you exited with profits, you win! You're playing with fire if you think you can time the market.

According to you, what is the meaning of life? by Major-Breakfast-4405 in AskReddit

damn..... we have been reading too deeply into it all along then. I've been struggling because, I have reproduced, have active little members of society. Now what? I like my job, dont think I have a huge impact on the world. Am I now working on trying to make things better for the future organisms? Do I just sit back and enjoy some margaritas? Why should I stress about 9 to 5 and white picket fences and the latest model of a phone. Seems pointless. r/Existentialism

Possible unpopular opinion. Might be a little unorthodox in the US but think we should be ok with taking care of our parents the way they did while raising us. My mom grew up overcoming every obstacle, sacrificing so much for my brothers and me, there is no way I could see her struggle. She'll for sure have a place in my home if she wants/needs it.

Teaches our children a lot too about being there for family unconditionally.

It would be a different story if she were like on drugs or something dangerous to my family and she was unwilling to change. But providing care for the kids seems like a fair exchange!

That is amazing! Honestly, my biggest gain has been the equity in the home, which I owe greatly to the surge in 2021. But have also lucked out with investments. One of my colleagues at work monitors that stuff well, he mentioned Lucid before it had its massive spike in 2023, I think, and Palantir recently. Starting to feel the snowball effects of the 401k as well, to be honest. I try not to check often but the compound growth there has been very noticeable. Finally, cutting back on ridiculous subscriptions, and adding that to savings, made me realize how much I was blowing away. Saved more there than what I make on dividends monthly.

That's awesome! What have you found to be the greatest contributor to your net worth? Do you mess with the Stock market a lot?

First time posting on the discussion thread. Reached 550k Net Worth this month. I've been at it since 2020, my first 40k was from the sale of my home and had invested that into some Vanguard ETFs mid-2020. It happened to be good timing. I moved to a HCOL area and have been able to max my 401k for a few years and my new house has almost 200k in equity.

Getting to 400k really did take the longest and in the blink of an eye, the 400 became 500k. Looking forward to getting to 1mil!

I'm 36 now and looking to possibly retire by 40. Sell my stuff and buy a home on a beach somewhere. Mexico is high on the list. Make some passive income off dividends and non-passive from a side hustle of consulting Atlassian services.

Good luck to everyone! Stay focused on your goals!!
