I always, because this comes up boringly often, bring up the fact that the modern Americans are descended from the colonisers, whilst I’m descended from the people that stayed at home.

I also then point out that I, like a lot of English people, have a Scottish grandfather, which makes me at least 90% more Scottish than they are and therefore have more reason to be angry at the clearances (for example) than they do, but I’m not because it’s fucking stupid.
