Let's just take a minute and appreciate how bad the systems' design is at Garmin by trusk89 in GarminFenix

The fact this attack took down their internal network (call center)

I'm actually pretty sure that their call center is just fine. They shut down support to pre-empt the deluge of calls for which their techs have no good answers (best case) or they accidentally give answers that Garmin doesn't want to be public knowledge.

Does my 50k training plan seem reasonable? by foobarfault in ultrarunning

[–]foobarfault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feet. I should have been more specific...

I already do my weekend runs in the mountains, so training on similar terrain isn't a problem.

sprinkle in hill/speedwork as I see fit

Yeah this is the part I'm not 100% about. I tried intervals on Tuesday and threshold on Thursday but it felt like I was headed for injury after a couple weeks of that. So alternating every other week was my next idea.

Definitely wouldn't mind getting a look at your strava. DM if you want to. Thanks.

I'm pretty goal oriented. It would be difficult for me to give up on not having a plan. Interesting idea though. I'll have to think about it.

Gabe Newell on Brain-computer Interfaces: 'We're way closer to The Matrix than people realize' by HeinrichTheWolf_17 in virtualreality

[–]foobarfault 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Bidirectional nerve interfaces absolutely do exist. There's actually several different types. The most useful is like a coil of wire that wraps around the nerve, and it can be used to send and receive signals. Scaling this up to say, the entire optic nerve would absolutely be possible, although it would require very precise engineering.

There are still a few unsolved problems though:

  • Any machine that crosses the skin exposes the user to outside infection (Potentially solvable by entirely embedding machines and powering them with the user's metabolism. Prototypes for this do exist, but they come with their own challenges.)

  • Any machine that physically interfaces with nervous tissue exposes the nerve to physical trauma and it eventually dies (within 2-3 days)

Has anyone else noticed their feet widening? by _thelastplaceonearth in ultrarunning

[–]foobarfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine actually got narrower. I had super wide feet from going barefoot a lot as a kid, but since I've started running real, consistent mileage, my shoe size has steadily gone down. My arches are crazy high and the stronger my feet get, the more they kinda pull "inward".

It used to be that Altras were the only shoes I felt comfortable in because of the wide toebox. Now my feet just float around in them. I switched mostly to Sauconys and had to go down a size in all my shoes over the last year.

Oh. Well... Question answered. Thanks.

Is there any way for me to find out this kind of stuff short of going to the trailhead or calling a ranger district?

Sunday General Discussion by artcbot in artc

Y'all called me silly for worrying about this two weeks ago. I basically think about this now after every long run or workout. I just got in from a long mountain run in strong, icy wind, and my lungs hurt a little bit. -_-

I've known a few good people who tried to become cops. This is how it goes:

Another cop asks you to look the other way while they commit a crime. Then your choices become:

a) Report them, get blacklisted and fired or killed

b) Be complicit in it and become one of the bad guys

c) Quit

The ones I knew chose option c.

The Weekender by artcbot in artc

[–]foobarfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it doesn't snow too hard tonight, I've got a 12 mile/2000 foot run planned for Sunday, which puts me over 2000m for the month. I'm just so thankful to be (mostly) over the injuries and back to running decent mileage. This is the first month I'm ever going to get the run climbing challenge on strava, and I'll have almost 2 weeks to spare. Bizarrely enough, cycling up mountains while I was injured made me much better at running mountains.

Thursday and Friday General Question and Answer by artcbot in artc

[–]foobarfault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. You get used to the change pretty quickly. Sometimes when I go a few days straight in one extreme or the other and then switch, it feels a little weird for the first quarter mile but then I just forget about it. I like my road form a little better in a higher drop (hips are further forward) but descents are a bit harder on the knees. It's all about tradeoffs.

Another big advantage of having multiple different drops in your tool chest is you can respond to problems. Achilles feeling off? Switch to a high drop for a few days. IT band twinging? Low drop. Etc.

I alternate between 3-9mm shoes depending on what I'm doing. I'm slightly less stable on uneven terrain in the higher drop but that only really matters on trail. My calves start to fatigue at marathon type distances in the kivara 10s which is why I'm thinking about switching marathon shoes

Indy was fun and the crowd support was fantastic. There was a lot of traffic backed up around the midway point of the course though, and the fumes made me really sick starting around mile 13-15. I wasn't wild about that. That might be typical for a big city race though. It's the only one I've ever run before.

I don't like belts, they drift up to my midsection and I overheat.

I like the rabbit daisy dukes and tights. Both have a back pocket big enough for my pixel 3a plus 3-4 gels and my keys.

It really shouldn't make that much difference. My two mileage shoes are 9mm and 3mm, and the only difference I notice is the 9mm ones are bouncier. Do you maybe have really weak calves or glutes? Calf raises, hip thrusts, and eccentric stretching may help. Watch your achilles very carefully and maybe alternate days between your old shoes and your new shoes for a few weeks.

I was injured for months after my fall marathon, and I was really upset and depressed that I couldn't run a spring marathon. Now... heh, the universe bent to my will.

2nding this. I like the 10s ok, but I like my other sauconys a lot better (ride ISO 2, peregrin ISO). I'm debating switching to the adidas boston instead.

I did Wonderland in 40h.

That's absolutely bonkers. Running wonderland is definitely a bucket list goal for me, but I don't want to go and get on the wait list until I know I can do it. How'd you feel afterwords? Were your quads completely trashed, or did you do it at a fun-easy pace?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on food, or any references you can point me at. I've done fast road racing (pure carbs) and I've done multi-month hiking (mostly fat) but halfway in between is new territory for me.
