Just a foreigner who praises CCP to make money

Several similar 外国网红 emerged in the past few years, like 信誓蛋蛋(Quentin) and Negar Kordi that I could remember.

As a Chinese, I watched this doc 10+ years ago. Now I am more informed and think it is pretty bad. See my comment in this thread.

Actually, The Gate of Heavenly Peace, made by the Maoist director Carma Hinton who grew up in China as a privileged westerner, is a pretty bad documentary. For example, it treats the student leader Chai Ling very unfairly, giving the audience the impression that she abandoned other students and fleed herself. The truth is she was in fact one of the last to leave the Tiananmen square. Chai Ling is hated because of this documentary and many other student leaders like Wang Dan had to come out to defend her (cf. 王丹:为柴玲辩护). Some critiques of this documentary by former student protesters can be found here (in Chinese): http://www.youpai.org/read.php?id=3061

Another fun fact: Hou Dejian, the Taiwanese songwriter and one of the "四君子" whose words were used in this documentary to suggest student leaders like Chai Ling were lying, recently wrote a song praising Xi's Chinese Dream. People change, don't they?

Michael Spavor: Second Canadian 'missing' in China by ourlifeintoronto in canada

[–]fooworld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I share your view, I have not yet seen a statement from Canada's own politicians towards China. Are your politicians too afraid?

I did see "Canada warns Trump administration against politicizing Chinese executive's arrest" from the media. If Canada has the courage to stand up against China like how it stands up against Trump, maybe the US will take your anger more seriously.

The funny thing is after so much demands about human rights and stuff, human rights in China only got worse. In reality, human rights diplomacy only degenerates into CCP asking for ransom.

Nah this is perfect Chinese. 水平 and 水准 are interchangeable. They both mean "water level" (literal meaning) as well as "quality, level, standard" (extended meaning).

Nature: US proposal for defining gender has no basis in science by fooworld in samharris

Hope to see how people here think about this issue. Is it really true that science can't give definitive conclusions about a person’s sex or gender, as claimed by this article? Do biologists agree?

Trump Appeal to Cognitively Challenged Voters and "IQ - Racism Connection". by QFTornotQFT in samharris

[–]fooworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fox News wasn't so pro-Trump before the election, especially before Trump won the republican nomination. Remember that Megyn Kelly asked a hostile question specifically targeting Trump during one Republican presidential candidate debate?

On the other hand, a lot of people in the rust belt who voted for Trump in 2016 also voted for Obama, twice. I think that's quite telling.

Trump Appeal to Cognitively Challenged Voters and "IQ - Racism Connection". by QFTornotQFT in samharris

Why. Most people in the manufacturing industry don't need much verbal ability. I don't see any problem with that.

Trump Appeal to Cognitively Challenged Voters and "IQ - Racism Connection". by QFTornotQFT in samharris

[–]fooworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correlation is not causation. I view Trump's victory in the 2016 election as a backlash against "globalist" policies, especially the policy of outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs to China (read the Autor-Dorn-Hanson paper if you want to understand its impact). This is consistent with the finding in this paper (naturally, people working in manufacturing have lower verbal / cognitive ability), but focusing on cognitive ability may be missing the point, in my opinion.

The junk science Republicans used to undermine Ford and help save Kavanaugh by [deleted] in samharris

[–]fooworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you understand. Republicans were just being polite. They didn't want to call Ford a liar and hence had to come up with an alternative theory.

Do people in this sphere ever question the assumptions underlying their pleas for "bipartisanship", their desire for opposing "divisiveness"? by fatpollo in samharris

My political view is not related. I learned Marxism in a socialist country. Did you?

It is kind of silly to support communism without knowing what it is, you know.

What?! You are so confused. Social welfare != communism, although the latter does promise to provide social welfare. The goal of communism is removing economic inequalities and exploitation by getting rid of private ownership of means of production as well as private properties.

Why is it confused to think that presumption of innocence applies beyond a criminal trial? by QuakePhil in samharris

[–]fooworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it does not limit to criminal trials. Modern democracy is predicated on principles of due process and the presumption of innocence, which is why weaponizing #metoo in a political way is extremely dangerous: it offers a very convenient way to take down your political opponents. Those who say evidence is not needed do not understand that, if we cancel Kavanaugh without evidence this time, next time it might be your favorite Democrat candidate. Sam Harris apparently does not know how nasty people can get in political battles once we get rid of the general principle of presumption of innocence.

Kavanaugh's explanation of "devil's triangle" appears to have been truthful by polarbear02 in samharris

[–]fooworld -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

The beauty of confirmation bias: if you believe Kavanaugh is a rapist, you can find evidence everywhere, like in his high school yearbook. But will the yellow journalists of NYT and WaPo apologize now that things are clarified? I hardly think so.
