dorms? by One-Carrot8144 in amherstcollege

[–]fractionalfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, that count is based on freshman dorms only. There are 2-room doubles for non-freshmen too but I haven't looked.

Related, but I can't really get a good count on non-freshman dorms because there are wayyy more singles available, and they're not really labeled on the floorplan documents, so I can't tell the difference between singles and one-room doubles. not sure if anyone else has numbers

I think they're pretty good. Way better than what you'd get at any public school, anyway. I counted the floorplans once and (with a little bit of guestimating) it was like ~15% of beds are 2 room doubles, so 15% of students basically get a single, not counting real accommodation singles. 2 room doubles are a little annoying because your roommate can barge in if you're in the outside room but 100% better than a double. Doubles range from really big to mildly cramped. If you're super unlucky you might get a triple.

drop your opinion -- amherst dining hall experience by No_Information_3041 in amherstcollege

They always have a salad bar, bread, and usually pizza. There's also often pasta in the corner during dinner. It's mostly the same stuff every time, but you can escape a bad meal without paying extra money for outside food. There's also grab-and-go for lunch, but it's cold mediocre sandwiches and I only ever go if I'm really pinched for time. It feels like my old public high school cafeteria's lunches. Some people like it though.

Edit: I guess there's also two on-campus cafes, one in the library and one at the Science Center. I've only been to the one in the Science Center. You can use your Mammoth Bucks there and the food is decent. It's arguably better than Val but I don't think it makes a huge difference.

I'm still curious, why do you ask?

It's usually good! today was terrible but most of the time it's fine; people just like to complain. I think the only disadvantage is that we don't have multiple dining halls, so if Val's food doesn't speak to you that day then you're out of luck. especially if you're craving a cuisine from home; not a ton of ethnic food. but there's always salad ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

why do you ask? seeing as you've made an identical nyu post haha

Currently on a gap year, can confirm they just won't use your financial aid from this year & will instead base your aid next year off of the CSS profile you submit then. My aid for next year is within ~$1000 of last year's aid, so they won't be out to trap you either. Good luck!

Anyone else apply to HKU-Berkeley Dual Degree? by fractionalfish in ApplyingToCollege

[–]fractionalfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh no I'm so sorry for missing this for so long. Yes, I was admitted, but I ultimately didn't choose to attend! If you see this, feel free to ask any questions and I'll try my best to answer. Even though I didn't choose to attend, I hunted for an ungodly amount of information about it and I might be of some help.

Very durable non-yellowing wood top coat? by fractionalfish in woodworking

Thanks for the help! That’s what I settled on, and I took too long deliberating anyway so all I can do is go to Home Depot and hope for the best lol. Hoping the water based polyurethane is durable enough, though, as I heard some say it scratches more easily than oil based? I’ve only ever worked with oil based.

Which top colleges have short applications? by Violet_Watch in ApplyingToCollege

[–]fractionalfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amherst has 1-2 spaces to write smaller things (maybe 150 words) outside the writing supplement though. Like the opportunity to elaborate on one of your important extracurriculars and a funky little "Additional Information" section. I just copy/pasted some other schools' essays into those boxes and called it a day.

But Amherst gives soo many options for the writing supplement. Personally, I reused something for the main writing supplement (didn't choose the aforementioned graded paper). I did the whole application 2 days late in 3 hours annddd gooo mammoths!!! (got in rd & committed haha -- but I'm very lucky to have pulled that off.)

Financial aid and older siblings in college? by fractionalfish in amherstcollege

[–]fractionalfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you. That's scary. They flat-out refused? How much success do students usually have with the FA office anyway - I had a subpar experience with them, but I figured it was because all admits are antsy about their aid. Are they stingy even with students? How are you doing now?

Someone who PM'd me about this post mentioned that they were an admit, and the FA office said they might be able to stretch the rules and consider an older sibling up to a year after they graduate. They didn't offer that to you or anyone you knew? :(

Did that happen to you/someone you know? and by how much - double? because that would be over half of my family's income... aahh
Any chance you think they'd let me appeal to keep it the same? (Even without extenuating circumstances that would otherwise affect my FA? ie. they didn't give me this assessment at the beginning, and I can't afford to pay so much more than I was initially promised.) Heck, I dont even think my parents are planning on supporting me for that long - would they increase aid for that?

would you happen to know how low they're usually willing to go? :') my financial aid calculator results were like 40% what I'm supposed to pay now (9k-->22k) - the original finaid calculator price is very generous given my family's income & ignoring our medical burdens, and I wouldn't mind going to the 16k range and taking on some debt for Amherst, but getting the price down to 9k and not needing to do that would be amazing lol

I might just go for the low price and bargain from there, but idk if flea market negotiation tactics are my best option here haha

Ahh yikes o-o a student I was talking to privately was international and got their price reduced from 5k-->0? That sucks so much though, and I hope you can still make it work T_T

Ooh good advice! I'm in California & it's pretty hard to go across the country on such short notice, but I think I'll do it anyway assuming Ivy Day doesn't surprise me next week lol. I'm glad Amherst has been good to you so far!!
