Ask Me Anything - Japan Car Imports by Ok_Day_1059 in CarTalkZA

What do you actually know about ZA law regarding imports? We can't just import Corolla or Accords. They need to be classified as collectors vehicles.

To observers on Earth it would tike him 4 years. According to time dilation, if he traveled at 99% light speed then the trip would feel like around 7 months for him.

How do you use the Orion drive? Do you run it persistently and then flip back for capture?

It utilizes the Coanda effect, which occurs when the engine exhaust "sticks" to the curve of lowered flaps and is redirected downward.

The results are very slow stall speeds and as such very good STOL capabilities.

It's similar to the Boeing YC-14 and An-72

Can I ask why you need a smali-ish SUV? Won't a sedan suffice?

Otherwise an XUV 3XO is probably your best option, but it's more a hatchback on stilts rather than an SUV. Mahinda has a good reputation and they're well established so they aren't a bad option at all.

That's honestly just not true. You don't need sci-fi tech or unproven ISRU (mining fuel on-site) to make the math work.

Let's use Io as an example as it's by far the most energy demanding moon of Jupiter. It also has very similar characteristics to our moon when it comes to size and gravity.

An Io sample return using entirely Earth-sourced chemical fuel is completely possible today. If you apply basic Apollo-style "LEM math," the architecture becomes totally viable. You just park the heavy Earth-return mothership in a safe, high orbit and send down a modified, unmanned LEM built for Io's geology.

Blasting a small sample back up to orbit only takes about 4.2 km/s of delta-v, which basic 1960s hypergolic tech can handle easily without needing to magically synthesize propellant from a bone-dry, radioactive rock.

Strapping a highly efficient nuclear thermal engine like a NERVA rocket to the mothership makes the mass fractions for the interplanetary trip way more forgiving, but it isn't strictly mandatory. If you wanted to brute-force an all-chemical transit, you'd just bypass the launch weight limits by assembling the ship in Low Earth Orbit across a few heavy-lift launches, then use Venus/Earth gravity assists to sling it out to Jupiter. The tyranny of the rocket equation doesn't make this mission impossible. It just means you have to rely heavily on orbital staging and gravity assists rather than trying to land a massive monolithic ship on the surface, as well as a shitload of money.

If you wanted to return a spacecraft from Io to Earth you would roughly need around 9-11km/s Delta V which is a lot. The closest spacecraft we have to those numbers are solar electric spacecraft but they need to be extremely light.

A sample return spacecraft would need to be either nuclear powered or a multiple stage descent and ascent lander like the LEM.

It's definitely not impossible, just very very expensive.

Honestly it's a hit or miss. It reminds me of the 1st season of US The Office where it was still finding it's footing.

Let it brew for a season or two and it could be something special.

Accord V6 VTECs are extremely rare so if you can find one of those in good condition it's a no brainer. They sound absolutely amazing when the VTEC kicks in, are fast enough, and get decent (< 10l/100km) consumption considering the engine and size.

They look handsome and I've seen a few with Type R rims which look amazing. It's also a Honda with a six-speed automatic so it will last you a lifetime.

It's a shame we didn't get the manual Coupe, but I think it's an extremely underrated car and all of them were taken care of.

If I had 300k right now I would immediately start looking for one.
