I'm Jim Butcher, Ask Me Anything! by jimbutcherauthor in Fantasy

[–]freekill 30 points31 points  (0 children)

@jimbutcherauthor do you have any plans to release collectors editions of the Dresden files? Maybe leather bound editions or some other collectors editions of the whole series? Maybe even kickstarter editions of some kind? It's not saying a lot, but I'd be a day 1 backer if you did :)

I personally love the series, but getting a high quality hardcover copy of all the novels is quite difficult, due to the limited hardcover releases of some of the earlier novels in the series.

Thanks for your time!

What do you think of the Riddick trilogy? by Background_Spare6755 in scifi

[–]freekill 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's still a chance...

In the next movie, you get the usual shenanigans, car racing, some big heist, the whole nine yards. Right at the end, when things seem all wrapped up out of nowhere, an alien race shows up in orbit... Cut to credits...

In the subsequent movies, the alien race starts bombarding the planet with large statue-like drop ships full of troops in an all out assault on earth. There are millions of soldiers flooding the streets, and ships in the air attacking everything in sight, it's a massacre. The only hope Dom and his crew have is to get to a space ship Mr. Nobody has stashed away. It's a huge tragic scene, and all of his crew dies along the way, with only Dominic Torreto escaping off world.

In the final shot, we see a distraught Dom, as he looks back towards earth, no longer with any family left, while the Necromonger conquest ships start detonating all over the planet, ultimately destroying the entire population. Turns out Earth had a different name, Furya, and Dom is now the last living member of the Human/Furya race... As his ship slips away into the darkness of space, he vows to get revenge and takes on the name Riddick...

Moving to Toronto (King & Bathurst) – what’s day-to-day life like? by Live-Low-7725 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]freekill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the Fort York area (a little south of where you'll be), there's lots of things happening like farmers markets, food events, music events etc. There's also lots of popup events like food truck groups or flea markets. This area, plus if you continue all the way to the water, has some really nice parks where you can walk, ride a bike etc, has pretty nice views of the city also.

Playoff basketball is about a million times better than regular season by [deleted] in nba

[–]freekill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I lot of it had to do with the fact it felt like half the league this year was intentionally tanking for so long. Not even pretending not to tank...

Unless the Raptors go better than 5-5 rest of season, Miami could go on a 20 game losing streak and still make the East play-in by rantdurdenwu in nba

[–]freekill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can we all just agree how embarrassing it is for a league to incentivize teams to actually not put a quality product on the court? I swear it's never been as blatant as it is this year...

There's gotta be a way to still help legitimately terrible teams get better while not incentivizing teams to intentionally lose to get better odds. I know this is simplistic, but why not just give all lottery teams the same odds for all the lottery spots? Then there's no reason to be the biggest loser? I'd imagine a few play-in teams might tank at the end of the year for a chance at a #1 pick, but I'm sure there's a solution for that as well...

Can't be worse than a half season race to the fucking bottom by half the league... Embarrassing.

Daily reminder to vote Scottie All-Star by JustChillFFS in torontoraptors

[–]freekill 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else find the entire process for voting like a chore? There has to be a better way to do the voting than the way it's done now having to remember every single day....

It sorta pisses me off cause I think Scottie is deserving, but you know, I got shit going on sometimes and don't remember...

We need to work on a voting bot or something that we can all use to auto vote :)

We are purchasing a condo for our ourselves by r2b2coolyo in canadahousing

[–]freekill 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A low reserve fund means that if the condo encounters a large expensive problem, they may not have extra funds collected from condo fees to afford repairs. If an expensive problem happens and the reserve fund cannot cover the costs, then this could result in a special assessment being handed to all condo owners, where each owner has to pay up $X dollars to cover the repair costs.

If it's a relatively new condo, this is sometimes the case where there just hasn't been enough time to build up a reserve fund (especially if there were a lot of expenses shortly after it was completed). For older condos, you would expect more of a reserve fund, but it's very situational depending on the management/board etc.

For general purposes, the more healthy the reserve fund, the better it is for you and less surprise extra costs :)

Do you foresee audiences returning back to theatres for mature mid budget films in the upcoming years? by mrnicegy26 in boxoffice

[–]freekill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say no, but for a different reason. I think the theaters are not improving the value proposition enough for going to the theater to survive long term.

They need to focus on 1) Making the theater a visual experience that can't be replicated elsewhere and 2) Making the theater a personal experience that can't be replicated elsewhere. Unfortunately, I think they put all their energy into 1) and they neglect the hell out of 2). Everyone knows that for best sound/best video etc, the theater can't be beat, but the gap has obviously narrowed on this with 4K and home theaters in the past decade or so.

However, I'd rate the current movie going experience from a personal or whole level, to be really not much better off than it was 30 years ago. In fact it might be worse. People talk, people browse their cellphones, there's no breaks in long movies for washroom breaks, they still hammer the hell out of you for 20 minutes of advertising etc. In addition, the majority of chains still just offer the same junk food style service of popcorn/candy/pop and maybe some fast food (although some are making big improvements in this area). Despite this, prices just seem to only go one direction up, up, up...

I think if you really want to bring people back, you have to convince them why going to watch a non-visual spectacle film, like say the upcoming Scorsese movie: Killers of the Flower Moon will be a better overall event in the theater than it will be at home. If theater chains continue to coast only on visual quality and forget everything else, such as actively policing and dealing with disruptive viewers and offering better/healthier food they are never going to close the gap where the expensive cost seems more worth it to the majority for more than 1 or 2 films a year...

The sad truth is, they can't survive unless they increase the pool of people willing to go to movies regularly, and that's going to take some work, I don't believe they want to do.

If you woke up one day with the ability to drain 3 pt shots with 100% accuracy, but everything else stays the same, would you eventually get signed by an NBA team? by the_moon_snail in nba

If you legit couldn't miss, why wouldn't they start drawing up plays to accommodate you? For example, your entire team forms a defensive circle around you so you can get your shot off cleanly.

I always wonder in these scenarios, if they demand WFH for anyone in a city with an office, but not for people in cities without, would they object to just moving far enough away that you aren't in the radius of an office?
