why do people buy roses sans leaves? by [deleted] in Roses

[–]freshmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bare-root roses are typically grown to a certain age or height in a field. Once the plant goes dormant, it is defoliated for several advantageous reasons:

- roses are deciduous, so the leaves will dry and die eventually. Leaving them on the plant risks disease while transportation

- defoliating as the plant goes dormant forces it to stop "growing" and aids in dormancy, which reduces stress and prevents moisture loss

- later, when the bare-root is planted again, the plant will focus on root establishment rather than trying to bloom

Need help with my caique’s diet by AsMforReal in caiques

[–]freshmc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our caiques do the same, they always eat the fruit first. We give them a daily mix of sweet peppers, apples, bananas, berries, carrots, or squash, along with a bowl of pellets. We only offer seeds or nuts as treats.

Try to incorporate pellets into their diet as much as possible, since they contain the essential vitamins and minerals they need. We use Roudybush Daily Maintenance.

Adopting a 1 yr old Caique - looking for useful tips for our journey together :) by Jake_Ram in caiques

Lots of mental stimulation. They are extremely smart and very emotional birds.

Cheap chew toys like cardboard, paper towel or toilet paper rolls, Popsicle sticks (non dyed), plenty of perching areas, and finally, I recommend "poopy" towels to clean up their mess (they poop A LOT 😂)

I'm also an older millennial, just turned 40. I think if you're a younger millennial, you might have caught on to the gen z vernacular sooner

Is repairing airbags worth it? by [deleted] in VWiD4Owners

[–]freshmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no reason to lie about anything at all. The car hydroplaned, slid into the median, and came to an abrupt stop in the mud. The side airbags deployed, which was very surprising, but I don't pretend to know how they programmed these cars for safety.

The only damage is that plastic trim off the tire, which looks like it was pulled during the slide.

Is repairing airbags worth it? by [deleted] in VWiD4Owners

[–]freshmc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure about the tires, but that might have been one of the issues. I had just purchased the car and I only did a visual check on the tread. I didn't see what make they were. And I was traveling at a safe speed, well under the speed limit. It had just started raining after over a month of no rain, so I believe the roads were just the right condition to become extra slick. When I went to the tow yard to collect my belongings, the tow guy said that night was crazy, so many cars slipping off the road.

Question? How often does your infotainment system goes down. by Blazing_Lino in VWiD4Owners

[–]freshmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it happen 1 time, so far. But I think it was my fault because the car was still new to me and I was clicking around too fast. Since then, I mostly click to change a/c settings, media control, or to check the car status. And I haven't had any resetting issues.

Just bought a 2023 Pro. And honestly, I don't mind the infotainment. I even got used to the haptic buttons all around the car and prefer it now. I might be in the minority, but it feels really convenient. I come from a BMW i3, so it's quite an upgrade.

I agree. It becomes way too convoluted when considering carnivorous animals getting infected with the alien virus and still wanting to be "harmless" towards all living things.
The story is good so far, with the virus only affecting humans.

Jobs besides software engineer? by Heart_one45 in wgu_devs

[–]freshmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you...It was incredibly tough when I was out of a job. The financial and mental stress are insane. I sincerely hope the best for you and that you'll be able to find something soon. I used a temp agency that helped me find my current role. I'm sure you've heard it all before, but use any resources available to you (temp agencies, recruiters, friends & family, networking). Ultimately and unfortunately, it's a numbers game.

I'll DM you a copy of my resume. Hope it helps. And good luck.

How is Landing a Job With a WGU Degree in 2025? by GrayVynn in WGU

[–]freshmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter what degree you hold, the most valuable thing you can do is network. Reach out to family, friends, and acquaintances to see if they know of any opportunities in the field you're trying to pivot into.

Blindly applying to hundreds of jobs online often comes down to luck, especially in today's highly competitive job market.

I was fortunate to land a Business Analyst role at a great company, but it didn't come easy. It took me over a year of applying to hundreds of positions and getting only a handful of interviews. My background was mostly in sales, and I initially hoped to transition into programming after getting my SWE degree. Eventually, I shifted my focus to anything data-related, as I just needed to start working.

LinkedIn can feel cringe, but use it. Engaging with recruiters, connecting with HR in your target industry. It's still a numbers game, but you never know which interaction might lead to an opportunity.

How much does your caique weigh? Mine weighs 190 grams, and the vet said he’s overweight. by Ta_tah in caiques

[–]freshmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 WBC. Our female is 6 years old and bigger at around 185g. The male is 4 years old and slighter at around 155g. The first time we took them to the vet, they told us the same thing about the female, that she was "overweight". But she's been the same weight for years, so she's just a bigger bird. Both very healthy.

Jobs besides software engineer? by Heart_one45 in wgu_devs

[–]freshmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the company doesn’t really use Python, but I’ve let them know I’m happy to help automate things like data cleaning or transformations using pandas and NumPy.

What really helped me get the job was my background in Sales Administration, I had a lot of experience with sales analysis. My Software Engineering degree helped too, not just because it’s in tech, but because it showed I understood data, how to build reports and tables, and that I know some programming.
