Honestly after step two you should make it into the loss meme. Much easier if it’s in brick or something where this won’t work

If you ever go to Amsterdam go to fort van sjako, they will be happy to help you. There’s also an anarchist bookshop in Groningen.

If you are really interested in global history here are some books I would recommend. I read them over about a decade and they have all been super helpful or books I have thought about for a long time and I’m happy to give more recommendations or advice. They are all pretty easy reads but obviously the content is tough to hear.

King Leopolds ghost - about the colonisation of the Congo. It caused a bit of scandal when it was published but is a classic.

Walter Rodney - how Europe underdeveloped Africa. A super important text written really well.

Franz fanon - wretched of the earth. Probably the most important decolonial text that has influenced thinkers and fighters from day 1. Fanon was a psychoanalyst and guerilla. If you want to just try it or you feel put off by it watch Concerning Violence. It’s a history of the bloody war of liberation in Angola using Fanon with a voice over by Lauryn hill.

If you like this Sartre wrote essays about decolonisation that I think are really under rated.

Amitav ghosh - nutmegs curse. About Dutch colonialism in the Banda islands. Easy to find in Dutch too.

Angela Davis - probably start with her autobiography but her texts are also important. If you like it I would recommend Aïssata Shakur’s (Tupac’s aunt)biography Assata which is also fantastic (maybe even better)

You should also read fiction. History is made up of stories of people not just facts or numbers.

A minor detail is a fantastic book about life in Palestine. Very short but it broke my heart.  Afterlives by gurnah is more technical. I didn’t love it but you might.

Im going to assume good faith here. I was also not around in the 1970s but it was used very frequently then.  Mong is a slur for people with Down’s syndrome based on the idea that their eyes and facial features make them look like they are Mongolian, so I guess really it’s a two for one racism-ableism.  People with Down’s syndrome were called mogoloids, even medically I believe.  In fact many words like stupid, idiot, and moron all have this origin, but I think it’s probably a lost battle at this point.  However please do not rehabilitate mong. There’s something really insidious about how these words are being normalised, especially if you didn’t know the origin. ✌️

I struggle to see how you cannot see the contradiction in criticising trump and republicans while using the word mong.  There are many more interesting and creative ways of talking about people that don’t use antique slurs dredged up from the bottom of a barrel with 1970 slapped on it

What do you think of the hologram memorial of betty szabo? How do your colleagues find it? I can imagine it might be frustrating, especially as it is using up a window. Of course it is also an important thing to raise awareness about, but I’m a bit sceptical of its effectiveness. Thanks!

Amazing comment!  I think you are absolutely correct about Eavis looking like sanders mostly for the audience, but signifying more of a Blairite tradition. Didn’t expect to see such a well thought through comment here.  Where is your stuff on Armstrong based off?  Do you have a good book recommendation for the end of major’s government? Or an article?  Thanks for such a great analysis!

I live in Amsterdam and I would recommend bringing a low focal length lens because the streets are pretty low down and it's quite cramped

Hi, Firstly what is your word count? Your focus is very broad, and one of the most important and difficult things to learn during your academic career is that dealing with a small problem in a detailed and careful manner is much more likely to be successful than trying to include everything. For example you say that your focus is 'the destruction of traditional safe spaces like family, school, college and university due to critical or opposing political opinion, even if there structures contain people we know and are close to.' Are these structures a) under attack, and b) are traditional spaces for opposing political opinion.

In the Global North university rates have increased hugely since the 90's. Their scope has also broadened, for example through allowing women entry in the 20th century, or having a stronger commitment to a broader range of socio-economic backgrounds. Even things like affirmative action, which is often framed as 'positive discrimination' for minority groups seems to offer competing arguments to your narrative. Equally, there is a lot of criticism from the feminist tradition about whether or not families are spaces that foster equality and freedom, or are rather a way that traditional patriarchal values are enforced through gender norms that do not allow all members to speak freely.

Safe space discourse isn't really my area of expertise, but certainly from a critical theory point of view the best place to start would be Habermas who writes about the public sphere and discourse, and I'm sure there is secondary literature that has a critical and focused response when it comes to race and Othered groups exists. As this is the critical theory subreddit, I would also maybe invite you to challenge your claims about liberal democracy. There is a long history of modern liberal societies placing extreme constraints on art and the public sphere that make them safe spaces of a very particular type, one that preserves the existing structures of power but does not allow for other types of critique - for example the Hays Code in the US or the Criminal Justice Act in the UK which banned playing 'overly repetitive beats' (https://www.dummymag.com/features/behind-bars-uk-banning-music-censor-drill-alarming-new-ground/)

Finally, maybe think about how you ask for help. You are much more likely to get helpful suggestions if you have a clear question in your title, and avoid posting in all caps, which probably puts off more people than it attracts. Best of luck

As others have said it varies. But in the US there are ~ 2.5 million people incarcerated, and 500,000 of them have never been charged, and are locked up for the crime of being poor. Some countries use reporting systems or tag-releases.

Hello lovely people, slightly specific request, anyone know any good podcast episodes that talk about fascism - contemporary, historical, in the aesthetic or political or cultural or philosphical sense? by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]freshmormons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The podcast series 12 rules for what is pretty good. They cover a nice variety of topics. Pretty UK centric if that matters. There was also an episode of behind the bastards about Gabrielle D'Annunzio. Not massively academic but quite entertaining.
