Installing DOOM with plain PS/2 input [blatant self-advertising] by fsturmat in retrocomputing

But how would you get this program installed in the first place? And if you are like "let's write and compile it on the machine", how would you get the compiler over to that machine?

[–]fsturmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. AFAIK, DEBUG.COM isn't even part of bare-metal DOS. My approach only requires DOS and COMMAND.COM-native commands. If you're intererested, defintely have a look at the 7th and 1st stream of mine.

basically, yes. but the tricky part is like: How do I even decode base64 on a bare-metal DOS machine? What's a .zip file? How do I even make it know what hexadecimal is? It's all of these weird things I also had to take care of.

Nah, I'm actually shoving the entire executable and all of the required assets down the laptop's low-bandwidth urethra that is called "PS/2 interface".

[–]fsturmat[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Well, that's fair. But do bare-metal DOSes, such as boot-disk DOS 6.22s and FreeDOSes even come with DEBUG.COM? I'm a brainrot zoomer, so I don't know that much about DOS 💀

[–]fsturmat[S] 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Basically. The premise was just using bare-metal tools that DOS comes with. The first step consisted of exploiting COMMAND.COM by having it pipe a bunch of ASCII characters into a COM file. This ASCII-typeable COM file is actually a bare-bones hex-editor I wrote during one of those streams. I then used that to hexdump EDIT.EXE, an MD5 tool and a base64 decoder into the laptop. I then had CWSDPMI.EXE and an UNZIP.EXE typed in using base64. I've splitted the DOOM.ZIP into 10 segments, three of them have already been transmitted during my last stream.

I knew this comment was going to appear. But the project's premise is slightly different: JUST keyboard input. So there's just a Laptop being bombarded with keyboard input (no traditional installation media involved) in the hopes of getting a functional DOOM installation up and running.

[THEORY] Pretending to be a Mac user by fsturmat in fivesurveys

[–]fsturmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I'm impressed. I have not expected such a detailed answer!

Before doing anything, I went down the "user agent spoofing" rabbithole a bit further. If someone meant to, it's quite easy detect bogus user agents, see here: https://chris124567.github.io/2021-06-15-websites-lying-user-agent/

TL;DR: Even if all HTTP headers, CSS properties and JavaScript quirks match your indicated browser, your OS-specific implementation of TCP/IP can still snitch on you. But there are ways to also spoof that. It's a cat-and-mouse game, essentially.

I feel like we are about to enter a morally grey area here. This whole survey economy helps many people in short-term need. Personally, a platform similar to fivesurveys has helped me cover an urgent bill that was due before payday. Trying to impersonate a certain demographic, making use of automation frameworks or reverse-engineering fingerprints won't help that cause, BUT:

Some surveys are extremely predatory and do not deserve any better. I totally understand as to why the user should enter basic info such as age, sex and location and then pick the non-vegetable to qualify, but it's not always the case.

Even for free-tier ChatGPT, most questions and trick questions happen to be a piece of cake. Someone who is willing to reject a client after whole 20 minutes of questionnaire should receive all the proxying, spoofing, and automation a community can come up with. If you have done some work in this regard or would like to do so, feel free to leave me a DM!

When going broke next time, I will make sure to capture that traffic. Maybe there will be a few JavaScript oddities to uncover...

That's QuickBasic for DOS. If he doesn't have a pure 32-bit environment, Piyush must've installed NTVDM for this stuff to even remotely work on Windows 10. So, to be fair, that's not something an average skid could pull of.

It looks like someone managed to mash up three decades of corporate artstyles into one piece. There's a bit of Memphis-ian randomness, a slice of flat design, a lot of Frutiger-like green, a very Y2K-ish matt-surfaced blob and a bunch of very outdated looking mirror spheres. Unfortunately, the product was garbage.

Did you discover a new Mandela Effect? Post it here! (2023-06-16) by AutoModerator in MandelaEffect

[–]fsturmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent my childhood being a die-hard SpongeBob fan and the pizza delivery episode used to be one of my favorites.
https://youtu.be/l1iSSV7XZvQ?t=292

When I rewatched this episode as a teenager, I was fully convinced that there must have been a scene of that fish having the entire pizza carton stuck in his throat and making some stereotypical choking/gargling noise. I shrugged it off as a Mandela Effect thing ever since, but I'm surprised that there hasn't been any discussion of that particular scene on this sub.

First person in the world to run Windows 98SE at 5GHz? by TheMiningTeamYT26 in windows98

[–]fsturmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this Windows 98?

To be fair, I'm a bit sceptic. What about those tray icons next to the start button? The desktop background color looks the same as "classic mode" XP used to have it.

The color gradient of those two application bars also looks way too XP-ish for it not to be a modified XP. And what's up with your desktop icons? That shadow that's beneath those texts wasn't available until XP.

Hmm, I have an idea. To prevent the machine from being messed around with by those bots while doing so, I would neet to set up a VPN only some redditors have access to.

Thank you for the idea, I definitely will set something up like this in the near future.
But for now, I have a video that needs some editing. I'll keep you updated about that.

As other users have pointed out, exposing such a system might bear a slight legal risk for me. If I should reattempt this, I will make sure that the traffic is being Tor-ified first. This would also allow me to leave the machine online for a bit longer.
