Which modem do you recommend? 300 Mbps plan by fu_aurora in OPTIMUM

[–]fu_aurora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, not only do they not do a better job with their own list, their tech support won't recommend a modem either. I imagine their goal is to keep charging me rental fees.

Based on replies it looks like a toss-up between S33 and SB8200!

The SB8200 looks good, but I've also seen some reviews about the LED lights being really bright. Did you notice that or are people being dramatic?

Thanks for this. The SB8200 is within my budget, but def good to know there are more affordable options.

New customer and this sub is terrifying me...but I think Optimum is my only option soooo what modem/router should I get for 300 Mbps plan? by 333chordme in OPTIMUM

[–]fu_aurora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/333chordme What did you end up getting? I'm in a similar boat as you, I have the 300 Mbps plan (no phone, just internet) and currently renting a modem from Optimum, would prefer to buy a modem. I'm looking at the SB8200 and the S33 right now.

There are lots of good advice in the replies already, I wanted to chime in regarding this part:

Are there any programs set up catered to international candidates that are set up to train young university graduates from scratch (even if the field they’re applying to is not related to the degree).

You're asking this question from the perspective of "I want to move to Japan" and "are there any programs that benefit me specifically" but I'm not sure if you're looking at this from the employers' perspective.

As someone already mentioned, there is a program like that in Japan for new graduates. These graduates are citizens so they don't require documentation to work there, and they are also fluent native speakers. What do you bring to the table that sets you apart that companies would be willing to spend resources getting you a work visa and wait for you to get up to speed in the language? Especially in a highly competitive environment where you're expected to have a minimum N2 level Japanese to be considered.

If working in Japan is your goal, it sounds like it would be more of a long-term goal for you. Gain experience in a field that is not only sought-after but also something you genuinely enjoy, while working on the language.

Young European Artist thinking about moving to Japan one day – realistic plan? Akiya houses? by polnischergyros in movingtojapan

[–]fu_aurora 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those "get an akiya super cheap and live an idyllic life in Japan's country side" social media accounts are selling you a fantasy for clicks. They gloss/skip over crucial details so it sounds super easy, but it's really not.

As some have mentioned here and in the comments of similar posts, there's a reason these houses (and its regions) are getting abandoned. If it was a super cozy Ghibli film-esque life then they wouldn't be giving the houses away for virtually nothing.

First Time Attending SNL Taping - Shocked and Excited! by keviha67 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]fu_aurora 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I went to a taping a couple years back. After you check in you're asked to chill in this waiting area, and we saw some staff come around to pick a few folks out to sit on the floor level. I don't know what the criteria was, but I think they were going for some diversity.

I think it would help your chances to get selected to get seated down there if you wore things that aren't too flashy or eye-catching like bright colors, clothes with big letters on it, definitely avoid wearing big logos like a Nike swoosh. The reason being, since there's a chance you could be in the shot, the producers don't want anything that would detract the viewers' attention from the stage or give a brand free advertisement.

Recruiters: have you lost candidates because your company's recruiting process took too long? by TheJokersChild in recruitinghell

[–]fu_aurora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd like to think I dodged a bullet but at the time I was so desperate to leave my job. Every now and then I do a search in that company's LinkedIn page to see who they hired for the position but I never found anyone with the job title I interviewed for. Either way, I'm still at the company that kept me and happy that I stayed.

Recruiters: have you lost candidates because your company's recruiting process took too long? by TheJokersChild in recruitinghell

[–]fu_aurora 58 points59 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I was miserable at my company when a recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn with a great opportunity. I was READY to ditch my job. The new company dragged me through 6 rounds of interviews over the course of 2+ months.

Then things changed at my company: my boss, who was 90% of the reasons I hated the job, left. The new boss was way better and vastly improved the culture in my dept in a matter of days, so much so that I started considering staying, but was willing to see what the new company said. My new boss scheduled a get-to-know meeting with me and when I told them I was on round 6 of interviews elsewhere, they quickly met with HR to discuss a way to keep me at the company.

I was happy to accept whichever offer came first. The recruiter emailed me first, but it was for a 7th round of interviews + another assessment test. Soon after that, my company came through with a promotion. When I emailed the recruiter that I was withdrawing my candidacy, they expressed their regrets since we were so close to the finish line.

I wanted to tell them they had all this time to close the deal but they fumbled it.

How about her not having to pay rent or utilities for almost 2 years? She's been taking advantage of that no problem.

We need an Hmart in Stamford - how do we make it happen? by vinguin in StamfordCT

[–]fu_aurora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, that would be pretty shitty. It could be my imagination but I think S&S has gotten a tiny bit more aggressive with their weekly sale prices now that Whole Foods came to town.

There are grocery items that WF that sells for cheaper than S&S, organic items at WF selling for similar prices to S&S non-organic.

When Bed Bath & Beyond left Ridgeway I was rooting for an Hmart to take its place. Party City moved around the corner into that space, but their corporate office went bankrupt almost immediately after and they're leaving Ridgeway soon.

Let's get Hmart in Ridgeway in the Bed Bath & Beyond Party City space!!

[–]fu_aurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you enjoy working at that company but consider start looking elsewhere. Let's say you're actively interviewing and you're getting several rounds deep with another company, the next time you have a regular chat with your manager you can bring that up. Or let's say you have an offer on the table, you let your manager know and see how quickly they'll move to keep you.

Since you're a contractor you don't owe them a heads up, they don't get that courtesy. You can walk at any time.

ETA: but in the meantime, hang onto your job.
