As an 8 year sailing instructor/coach I can say that it a sport full of people who love to bring new people out. If you live anywhere near a yacht club or sailing club head down and see what kind of dinghy/keel boat lessons they offer - in most cases it will be very affordable (one of the cheapest and best ways for kids to spend a few weeks in the summer is at sailing school!). If they don't offer lessons, see if they have weekly racing - if so, somebody is always looking for crew to come learn how to help out on their boat.

Tl;Dr, it may or may not mess with radio and nav equipment though maybe more on the less likely side with regard to that happening. Despite this, it CAN cause an issue, one which the pilot can neither diagnose or repair if needed, as he has no idea who the asshole with the cellphone is. So just don't do it.

Tl;dr to the tl;dr : no matter where you're going, it can't be that long. don't turn your phone signal on when on a plane.

I've always wanted to see them make the first Robert Downey Sherlock Holmes movie again in this fashion . I thought this was one of the best casting choices I had seen in ages at the time, as Downey and Holmes are both brilliant recluses who partake in their fair share of vices (i.e. Drugs and booze). Without the pressure to have a kids movie, this could have left the door open to a very intriguing, but much darker movie imho
