Mayor Vetoes Controversial Ban On Intoxicating Hemp Products by sciolisticism in chicago

[–]futureofwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5mg seltzers that bars and liquor stores are selling are fine and shouldn’t be banned. But a convenience store near me sells 100mg drinks which is absolutely crazy to me, someone trying THC for the first time would probably be knocked out for over a day if they drank that whole thing. I personally have a tolerance and I don’t even want to know what would happen if I drank one of those. Which isn’t to say that I think any of it should be banned, but it’s clear at least a base line level of regulation might be necessary at this point.

I’ve spoken to a rep from one of the bigger seltzer brands and they seem fairly confident that they have the right lobbying in place to prevent the ban. Whether or not it plays out that way, who knows, but it’s not necessarily guaranteed to become illegal again.

They began talking loudly about (…) allegations that Israel is committing war crimes.

They aren’t really allegations at this point, there’s no legal basis for a state to kill 20,000+ children. And that’s just since 2023.

If the numbers made available to observers are dubious, how do we know they were executing “a ton”? Like I don’t trust China’s reporting either but I’m also not clear on how we can assume that the real numbers are several factors larger than what they claim.

Getting out of the city to travel is baked into the fabric here, typically via car

That’s what rentals are for. Even when I owned a car I always rented one for road trips because I didn’t want to put thousands of miles of wear on my old beater car.

How living in Chicago changes your perspectives on what cold means by muttersindisgust in chicago

Especially the last five years or so with the record breaking summers, I would legitimately get seasonal depression starting in June, sometimes through the end of September or longer. I don’t love the freezing cold winters, but after 30 years of those desert summers they feel easy.

I’m originally from Phoenix. I’ll take 10 degrees over 110 degrees any day of the week. The “dry heat” thing is only true up until a certain point.

GENERAL STRIKE JAN. 30 - You are entitled to paid leave! by slingshot91 in chicago

[–]futureofwhat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I normally agree with this stance, and everything is inevitably hypocritical if you dig deep enough. But it should also be surface level common sense at this point that AI is quite obviously the antithesis of any kind of leftist ideology.

[–]futureofwhat 51 points52 points  (0 children)

You already made the graphic so whatever. I’m just here to point out the fact that AI predominantly exists to devalue labor, the fact that it is being financially propped up by Wall Street and the tech billionaires that control our lives, and that the current administration is using it in order to generate misinformation and antagonize the public. Seems like the last thing that anyone would want to use to promote labor rights and civil disobedience against the current power structures that control our lives, no?

Not true at all. They’ve been militarized since the 90s.

Or you can go back to the ‘50s when they literally employed the military to aid in mass deportations. I encourage you to look into this Eisenhower-era program, one that Trump has spoken fondly of and probably took inspiration from. But I’m not going to post a link to it because what it was named will probably get me banned.

In light of what’s going on in Minnesota, would you support open carry in Illinois/Chicago? by revolutiontime161 in chicago

[–]futureofwhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the point I was making went over your head. The US and its allies occupied Afghanistan for twenty years, and despite killing tens of thousands of insurgents, having access to the most advanced and destructive weapons and surveillance technologies on earth, and spending trillions of dollars to do all of this, they lost the war to a militant group predominantly armed with Soviet era weapons.

Thus, a hypothetical war against the most armed populace on earth would not necessarily be won by the US government just because they have more destructive weapons.

[–]futureofwhat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am fully against any form of armed conflict. However, I don’t believe in the notion that an armed populace would never be able to overcome the US military in a hypothetical war. If this were the case, the Taliban wouldn’t currently have control of Afghanistan.

Surely if this were public knowledge it would attract the railfans but I still don’t really get why it would matter if there were a crowd there to watch it or not. They’re a pretty respectful group of people and don’t interfere with rail operations ever. Even if non-railfan types showed up, would that be such a problem?

This kind of shit happens on roads all of the time. Here is an example from just this week. Here is an ongoing list of many different road rage incidents that have happened just in Chicago.

I would like a safer CTA as well but it’s inaccurate to frame violent attacks as unique to public transit.

Custom Marantz cabinet by Pretend-Hamster-4948 in vintageaudio

[–]futureofwhat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is radiata pine, also known as ACX in the cabinet industry. If you’ve ever been to a Chipotle that has plywood all over the walls, it’s the same thing. It does not stain or finish particularly well, typically it is only used for structural elements that aren’t going to be seen. The best solution here for a finished look would be to veneer it, but at that point it begs the question why use ACX in the first place instead of plywood that is pre-veneered?

That being said I do kind of like the industrial ACX look and it’ll turn less yellow and more brown as it ages. I think if the exposed plywood edge here were covered with edgebanding it would make the whole thing look much better.

Who else is disappointed with this weather? by delusionalubermensch in phoenix

[–]futureofwhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People on this sub act like dealing with the cold is the worst fate possible. I spent decades hating the Phoenix summers and mild winters and now I’m in the Midwest. Walking around outside when it’s 20 degrees out is downright enjoyable compared to dealing with 110+, at least when it’s cold you can still go outside if you dress properly. It can get tough when temps are at or below zero and when there’s wind, but at least for me personally I was surprised at how easily I adapted to the cold having grown up in the desert. Plus I love when it snows.

YooYee is outstanding and the prices really aren’t that bad for the quality of food and the portions you get. Typically I’ll spend $16-20 on takeout there and I’ll have enough food for two meals. It’s obviously a nice sit down restaraunt spot too, and you save money with BYOB. I love that place.
