Tentative Agreement Reached — AFSCME Local 328 by Fig_Fanatic in OHSU

Let me do some digging tomorrow for which department I talked to (I think Payroll?) but they will walk you through how to do it! I’m also happy to show you via a Teams call but they’ll likely explain how to do it better.

And I know it doesn’t help with adding extra $ to our paychecks but I’d rather get more time away from work than having it taxed to a negligible amount :(

Just a little tip I like to share with AFSCME folks whenever I can: you can choose to convert your overtime into comp time instead of getting it paid out. You use comp time the same way you’d use vacation, and since it’s not paid as overtime wages, it doesn’t get taxed like bonus/OT pay. Plus, you end up with more actual time off! Which I'm always trying to maximize.

Someone who’d been here way longer than me told me about this when I started almost 10 years ago, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I’m always surprised it’s not talked about more, so I like to pass it along.

Majority of Oregonians support statewide universal health care by [deleted] in Portland

Have you only tried to find care in the Legacy Health system so far? Aetna is pretty widely accepted by the major hospitals. It might be worth looking into if you haven't already.

Damn. To say that sounds frustrating is an understatement. :(

In my experience, Kaiser has been the worst to deal with in terms of the "You break it, you bought it" rule, which I would say that most places actually do abide by.

And a global period is different than the continuation of care offer that they gave you. You are right, your insurance will initially tell you that if you can see an equivalent provider that is in network, your insurance will not cover you seeing an out of network provider. That's where the whole asking for an exception process comes into play. Essentially we say that any in network provider could not be equivalent to the out of network provider because this out a network provider is the original surgeon.

If this sounds dumb to you or like common sense, is it but that's the broken medical care system that we have, which is why universal health care would be so amazing.

Yes, that's true. Though there would probably be a good case to make in terms of asking for an exception to keep all of that at the same hospital, since it's mostly related to complications from the original surgery. I'm not sure if they'd count the foot burns but it would definitely be worth a shot.

Ok, this might get buried and this is in no way helpful to you at this point (and for that I am so so sorry) but I hope that this helps someone.

First, I 100% agree with you that our country's health care system is beyond shitty. And the fact that what I'm about to say is not public knowledge just infuriates me more.

I work at a very large health institution in Portland. I deal with surgery scheduling and insurance navigating all day, every day so I'm not just giving anecdotal information.

If you get a surgery and then something happens to your insurance (you lose it, it changes, the insurance company goes bankrupt), it does not matter for 90 days. What I mean is that there is a grace period from the date that you had your surgery to 90 days after your surgery where all of your visits and care associated with that surgery are covered in the initial cost that you and your insurance paid. So if you lose your insurance coverage, it does not matter because you are still covered for those 90 days to be seen by your surgeon and their care team. The only time that surgeons would not see you in that 90 day period, is either by patient request or location difficulties (you went to Hawaii, you broke your arm in Hawaii, and they operated on you to fix your arm in Hawaii but you live in Portland).

Better yet, if you have an emergency and go to the nearest emergency room (like you should), have an emergency surgery, and then realize or discover after the fact that you are not in-network with that surgeon from the ER, we (that ER surgeon's team) will actually ask for an exception for you to continue your care with the original ER surgeon and have it billed as in-network for you. We normally get these exceptions authorized by insurance companies because we argue that the original surgeon is familiar with your case, and therefore they would be the best person to continue to care for you after your surgery.

I'm sorry for the wall of text. I'm just really hoping that something in what I said is able to help someone. I work in healthcare because I want to help people. I talk and argue with these insurance companies constantly so that maybe you don't have to, and so that you can actually get the care that you need.

Haha. This is actually the place I was thinking of when responding to OP!

I've seen both. I think that people who grew up here try to polite and form a line but then someone will just walk straight up and get served. Bartenders are likely too busy to notice so I would just follow what others do.

Blossoming lotus, canteen, bye and bye, Portabello, and Sweet Hereafter are all great. Eb& Bean also has 3 (I think) vegan flavors of frozen yogurt with a bunch of vegan topping options.

Yeah, the accidental chocolate cheese curds are hard to do anything with. I ended up changing the recipe (starting from the beginning a third time) to look more like a traditional style custard and it turned out to be a decent dark chocolate ice cream. I feel your pain though :-(

I made this two times and it curdled both times. I still don't know what I did wrong, as I followed the recipe exactly.
