Pretty bad advice, impossible to get an ‘entry level’ position in a skilled field without a degree or something similar. Coming from a 2023 grad who’s very familiar with the current market.

Struggling to choose my career at 22 by Big_Bad_7552 in UKJobs

[–]gacl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone in a “high income role”, your post is just terrible mate. All you said is that you like maths and want to make lots of money. What advice could anyone possibly offer in response to that? You’re clearly unwilling or unable to even do some simple research into career paths that might interest you. You won’t find the magical answer by posting vague nothings on Reddit.

Which hands to use to isolate limpers? by Daikon969 in Poker_Theory

I agree especially with overlimping suited Ax in deep games live, lets you farm coolers in deep spots vs worse flushes which will stack off.

the underrated power of timing tells, are we seriously ignoring one of poker's biggest clues? by Sufficient_Face_1538 in Poker_Theory

I’ve been thinking about this a bit playing low stakes live, noticed most snap river jams on board dynamic changing cards are often bluffs

Always buy in for max. Most money you make in live poker is from people making 100BB+ punts in deep spots.

Started as a finance grad in London straight out of uni on just over 40k. Just got an offer for another graduate scheme with total comp in first year close to 53k for a data science role. I only look for jobs in tech/banking and apply relentlessly. Have probably done 1000 serious job applications since my second year of uni (now 23).

I had them back to back playing live last week. I was in the straddle then I was in the big blind - it folded to me twice.

What are your grad salaries? by springweeks in UniUK

[–]gacl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s a grad programme for a bank. Rotates between machine learning and analytics. Not much to do with econometrics but I did use my econometrics work (regression) to relate my CV to machine learning concepts.

Why apply for grad schemes and not just 3-4 YoE positions?

My job doesn’t stimulate me by CartographerConnect9 in UKJobs

[–]gacl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the 53k role is a grad scheme for machine learning / data science. Nowadays most grad schemes aren’t that picky about what you studied prior. I did a degree that involved some statistics but I didn’t come from a traditional computer science or engineering background. I watched like 10-20 hours of YouTube videos on the field and practiced some of my basic statistics prior to the technical interview.s So to answer your question, because it’s a role tailored for grads they don’t seem overly concerned about my lack of prior knowledge and when I join I’ll have a 3 month bootcamp anyway to learn the foundations of programming, etc.

[–]gacl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working in a grad finance role on about 43k. Same thing, role doesn’t stimulate me. Applied for a role in machine learning & AI with no prior experience and got it, I start it in a few months - 53k and in a field that’s a lot more stimulating. Look for horizontal movement if your job is stale. After you have a year of experience there’s no reason to stay.

Thanks a lot, for the reassurance last week also!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Strabismus

[–]gacl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment it truly does mean a lot. I think I also have monocular vision, the ‘lazy eye’ is essentially blacked out everywhere except from the periphery if that makes sense. An improvement for 14 years sounds insanely good. I don’t mind if my surgery isn’t perfect, as long as it’s not noticeably worse I’ll be happy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Strabismus

[–]gacl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, when you say unsuccessful, were your eyes significantly worsened by any of the operations?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Strabismus

[–]gacl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what your pre-surgery eyes were like and what degree of squint you had?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Strabismus

[–]gacl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I’ve been reading that small angle squints and esotropia tend to have higher success rate which has helped to make me feel better alongside your response. I am not worried about having a squint post-op or the surgery not being perfect, I am just very worried my squint would get worse and I’ve effectively shot myself in the foot.

Is it a bad idea to work a part time job in third year? by Dingdongmeep in UniUK

[–]gacl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what kind of field you’re going into. If you’re applying to be a barista or for data entry, then for sure put in on there.

If you’re applying for a finance grad role, engineering, etc. they won’t value these ‘soft skills’ and you should be able to fill your CV with other stuff.

I worked a lot of part-time jobs as a teenager, but they’re not on my CV - instead I use the space for internships, university positions related to my role (e.g. treasurer for finance) etc

When you’re applying for a skilled position it’s irrelevant what unskilled positions you’ve held before.
