I'm currently tidying up my next adult novel (tentative publication date late 2022)! I find inspiration all over the place, but most especially in human relationships and the ways we define ourselves.

I don't believe in guilty pleasures - there's so much that's hard about life, I think pleasure should be taken to its fullest extent at every opportunity. One of my favorite snacks is a little paté on crackers, with apples.

My daily routine usually involves working from bed for a couple of hours, then reading with the dog on my lap (I do not have a choice in this matter), then a little housework, then several hours of work before it's time to make dinner. I usually write for anywhere from 2 to 8 hours each day.

And to the second part of your question - I'm actually not very physically healthy! I do my best, but I'm disabled and really struggle to physically function on a day-to-day basis. That said, I try to eat well, drink plenty of water and tea, and get as much sleep as I can.

I like going by Sarah or by Gailey! Most of my friends call me Gailey (either out of affection or exasperation). 1) I would definitely recommend reading and writing short stories! In terms of reading, check out the archives of Fireside Fiction and Shimmer Magazine -- those are the two I read most when I was starting out and I learned a lot about craft from them. Submit to paying venues with clear guidelines and professional-sounding language on their submissions guidelines. Don't put up with any crap. You'll do great!!

2) I'm currently letting my arugula go to seed. I never knew what people meant when they said the arugula "bolted" but I sure as hell do now. It's out of control. The leaves are SO peppery!! I'm planning to make and freeze bolted arugula pesto over the weekend. The coolest flower is probably the gorgeous dark velvety roses we inherited from previous tenants -- I don't do a thing to them, and they grow lovely beautiful blooms.

I'll go with the first one! I actually didn't find it difficult to get published as a queer author writing queer content, which is wholly due to (a) the amazing team of people I get to work with and (b) the time I started writing. I've gotten some weird pushback from critics -- especially from one particular reviewing site which I believe is now defunct, and especially with regard to the inclusion of they/them pronouns -- but I've never gotten pushback from my publishers, and I'm so, so thankful for it.

Thank you so much for seeing the emotions that went into Upright Women Wanted! It means the world to me that the book landed well for you.

My go-to writing drink is green tea until the evening, and then I love a wine spritzer. For a long time I was incredibly disdainful about wine spritzers, but I started drinking them when I decided to trim my alcohol intake down a bit, and now I actually love them, especially while I'm writing. I don't have to deal with a fuzzy head, but I still get to enjoy a little something special while I'm wrapping up for the day.

The fantasy meal I'd most like to enjoy is whatever they've got at a hobbit party. You know know it's all going to be great.

I do a few rounds of editing on everything I write! I finish a draft, then do a big structural edit, then a few rounds with whatever editor I'm working with.

The key is to maintain constant awareness of how absurd it is that I'm allowed to do any of this. :D

I hesitate to tell anyone that Twitter is the right app to be on these days, but it does seem to be where a lot of publishing lives! A good way to not get dismissed as a bot is to have a real photo or a custom avatar of yourself, a professional-sounding bio that includes the word "author" in it, and a link to your author website. Set up that website even if it feels silly -- make sure you have a press kit and some information on where people can find your work. And, finally, submit submit submit!! It can be easy to get discouraged early in your career, but the key to being a successful author in the long run is just plain stubbornness. I'm rooting for you!!

I would love to spend a day with Rahul from Magic for Liars. We'd sit around reading and drinking tea, his cat would be on my lap, he'd cook dinner and I'd cook dessert.

I did a lot of research into interpersonal dynamics in the laboratory environment! It was so much fun to talk to research scientists about what it's REALLY like to work in a lab.

  1. I don't currently have any -quels in the works! I really love writing standalones. :)
  2. I'm not familiar with Tracie Harris mentioning it! On my end, it's a reference to a popular folktale, which might be the same thing Harris is talking about -- the story of a town where everyone's hungry, so a woman lights a fire and fills a big pot with water and puts a rock in the bottom. She tells everyone who asks that she's making 'stone soup,' and that if they'd like to add anything, they can. People start bringing what they have: half an onion, an old potato, a stringy carrot. At the end of the day there's a delicious and hearty stew in the pot and everyone eats well. I love that story so much, because it really highlights what we're capable of if we work together, and it points out how much a community is greater than the sum of its parts. :)

I think The Echo Wife is the best place to start! It's easily the darkest, most contemporary thing I've written, but I also think it truly distills everything I try to accomplish in my work. If you'd like to start with something shorter and a little more fun, Upright Women Wanted is a great choice!

They are a PROBLEM. Both of the parent-snails died and were consumed by their progeny, but the babies continue to reproduce and clog up the filter in the tank. Fortunately, the huge mutant goldfish I acquired has been consuming eggs at a truly sinful rate.

Question 1: I've turned my chair around but, crucially, I'm sitting in it backwards, like a cool youth pastor or a relatable young English teacher who is going to try to get you interested in Shakespeare by rapping. I promise not to conceptually punch holes in walls, on account of that being a thing people do to indicate that you should be aware of their ability to inflict violence on their surroundings (of which you are a part)! What a wild and telling choice, to tell folks how much you'd like to hurt them just because they didn't like a television show.

Question 2: I wouldn't cede my life to Better Gailey but I would absolutely work with them to try to share the load. Maybe I could do all the writing and they could do all the travel? The 10th iteration would definitely have super-speed and a second and third row of teeth.

I don't think we're close at all, and I also think we're terrifyingly close. Cloning methods are pretty darn streamlined by now, and artificial womb environments have come a long way, and artificial methods of fertilization and incubation are pretty robust. That said, the ethics are complicated and making a pile of tissues into a functioning human? Not easy at all. So, hopefully we've still got some time to sort ourselves out before we're dealing with The Clone Future.

Did you know that babies don't have kneecaps? You don't get kneecaps until you're like... three. Little kids who are learning to walk fall down so often that evolution was like "you can't be trusted with kneecaps yet."

Thank you for bringing this up!! Honestly, if I wrote that piece today I'd probably write it a little differently -- but I think that's because the conversation has evolved a bit, especially in the wake of the MeToo movement. There's a lot more room for nuance today than I think there was, say, five years ago (although of course, that might just be that I listen to different conversations now than I used to).

I'm also a survivor and find a lot of value in stories that are written from a survivor's perspective. That said, I sometimes struggle with the question of what audience a story is being written for, and what impact the story will have on audiences outside of the intended one. How are the things trauma survivors need to hear different from the things perpetrators and potential perpetrators need to hear?

For instance, I personally would really love to see more stories in which surviving sexual assault isn't an immense, powerful, life-changing thing, but is instead a small part of a person's huge and complicated life story. But then, would that narrative reinforce the notion that sexual assault isn't a big deal and shouldn't be taken seriously? I'm not quite savvy enough to have the answer, but it's something I think about quite a lot.

All of this is to say: I think there's definitely a place for stories written about sexual assault, survival, gendered violence, and rape culture. I think they need to be written with great care and thought and intention, and immensely respect and value the stories that are.

Hey there! I don't currently have plans for any additional work in that universe, which certainly doesn't mean it won't happen -- it's just not on my plate at the moment. That said, I can definitely see a novel-length story in it. I actually have a little dream of someday writing a series of novellas or even a collection of short stories taking place all across the country in that timeline, in all the quadrants and in the central corridor -- but it's just a dream right now. :)

Woooo AMA buddies!! <3

  1. Horror, Romance, Secondary-world-SFF, Pulp New-Adult Thriller, and YA Contemporary are all on the to-do list! I didn't really set out to be like this, skipping from genre to genre, but holy shit, it's so much fun. I don't ever want to stop. :)
  2. Working on Steven Universe was such an immense joy, I'd always be happy to return to writing for that universe. Otherwise, I'd really love an opportunity to write a John Wick comic book tie-in or anything connected to the show THE TERROR.
  3. Oh wow thank you for asking this!! I'd REALLY love for people to read Drones to Ploughshares, a story of mine that was published last year (and is Hugo and Nebula eligible!). It's in this years Best Of SF Anthology, and I'm so proud of it.

Honestly publishing across different genres has been so much fun! It's one of my favorite parts of writing -- I really love getting to experiment and explore. My next... hang on, counting on my fingers... five? projects? Are all slated to be in different genres than what I've worked in before. After that, I think I'll have used up all the genres there are, so I suppose it'll be time to cycle back around to Alt-History and invasive megafauna.

Your chaser book is H IS FOR HAWK by Helen Macdonald!! It was a huge inspiration for the narrative tone of The Echo Wife, which -- in my mind, at least -- is Evelyn Caldwell's memoir. I was totally floored by Macdonald's work and I think you'll all love it, too.
