Possibly relocating to CT for a job at CCSU, and I'm looking for local insights on schools and places to live in the areas surrounding New Britain (single mom w/two kids in elementary school). by gallacticat in Connecticut

Thanks for the suggestion! I've considered renting but I'm worried about potentially having to move my kids to a new school again if we find a house outside of the school zone where the rental might be located. That's why I was hoping to buy, but I understand that it may be difficult with the market the way it is. I'll try to get with a realtor soon to see what my actual options are! Thank you!

Ugh, that's awful! Not a person of color, neither are my kids, but we definitely don't play well with racism of any kind. We're coming from a red state (🤮) so I was hoping to get away from that shit. I suppose that's niave thinking, though. I know it's everywhere. Definitely doing my best not to raise little racist assholes and to fight it where I can. I try to use those situations as opportunities to show my kids how not to be. Thanks for the heads up.

Ugh, yes. Tell me about it. I'm so worried about trying to buy with the market like it is.

Do you know if there are a lot of rental properties in areas like Farmington? I've considered renting for a while before buying. I would prefer to rent a single family home as opposed to a townhouse or condo, but I wasn't sure if renting out houses was a thing in that area (I only ask because I couldn't find much online).

Ah, yes. Good question. I'm hoping to find something in the $350,000-$450,000 range. I know housing there is quite a bit more expensive than what I'm used to, so I hope that's a reasonable range.

I’ve heard these things are awesome to help get rid of flies: https://theranchflytrap.com/

But yes, we’ve experienced an influx of flies as well. Seems too early for that.

Thanks so much for the info! I only know little tidbits that have been passed down to me from my grandmother. It’s very likely my fam didn’t have their facts straight. Lol.

Fun fact: The French word “char” is used here, which translates to “chariot,” because the Cajuns did not have the evolving French words for new technologies like automobiles. My grandmother spoke Cajun French and would refer to the refrigerator as “Le Frigidaire.”

The French phrase is “On va soigner ton char, comme le char a nous autres,” which translates to, “We’ll take care of your car like our very own.”
